Book Synopsis Essays in Production, Project Planning and Scheduling by : P. Simin Pulat
Download or read book Essays in Production, Project Planning and Scheduling written by P. Simin Pulat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: This festschrift is devoted to recognize the career of a man who not only witnessed the growth of operations research from its inception, but also contributed significantly to this growth. Dr. Salah E. Elmaghraby received his doctorate degree from Cornell University in 1958, and since then, his scholarly contributions have enriched the fields of production planning and scheduling and project scheduling. This collection of papers is contributed in his honor by his students, colleagues, and acquaintances. It offers a tribute to the inspiration received from his work, and from his guidance and advice over the years, and recognizes the legacy of his many contributions. Dr. Elmaghraby is a pioneer in the area of project scheduling (in particular, project planning and control through network models, for which he coined the term ‘activity networks’.) In his initial work in this area, he developed an algebra based on signal flow graphs and semi-Markov processes for analyzing generalized activity networks involving activities with probabilistic durations. This work led to the development of what was later known as the Graphical Evaluation and Review Technique (GERT), and GERT simulation models. He has made fundamental contributions in determining criticality indices for activities, in developing methodologies for project compression and time/cost analysis, and in the use of stochastic and chance-constrained programming and Petri Nets for the analysis of activity networks. This volume brings together fourteen contributions, which can be viewed under the following three main themes: operations research and its application in production planning; project scheduling, and production scheduling, inspired by, and in many cases based on, Dr. Elmaghraby’s work in these areas. The first five chapters are devoted to the first theme, followed by four chapters each devoted to the other two, respectively. An additional chapter is devoted to the vulnerability of multimodal freight systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God-Daddy provided a story vividly told of a controversial yet successful businessman and the protective, surrogate father-like relationship he has with two young ladies. It was a narrative through the eyes of these young ladies, their fortunate connection and sometimes trials of that connection to – God-Daddy. From the Bahamian-American community of Port Salerno, Florida it was an adventure through Florida and the Bahamas. That was then, this is now. The Bloodline of The Business provides us with two offerings in one: God-Daddy: The Sequel and The Book of Michael. In God-Daddy: The Sequel, Janine and Falana are now college graduates and still close to their God-Daddy; a relationship that is now two-fold because they are employees of his corporation. God-Daddy, now semi-retired, is ecstatic with them being a part of his continued business success. He is now faced with the challenge of ensuring the corporation he started continues to be successful. That is not without obstacles. God-Daddy: The Sequel is told from the view of Janine, Falana, family members and God-Daddy himself. This chapter in the ongoing saga goes further into Bahamian culture and its influences of Bahamian-Americans. The question that has been asked since the novel God-Daddy has been released is exactly who is God-Daddy? How did he become the man that he is now? What influenced his character and were there certain experiences that caused him to be so driven? The questions are finally answered in: The Book of Michael. The Book of Michael intimately explain God-Daddy going back generations to explore his family influences to his person. It depicts his life experiences that perfected his discipline of focus in business and love for his heritage. The Book of Michael brings together God-Daddy and God-Daddy: The Sequel by describing life before and after the previous two offerings.

Download or read book Big Daddy written by Timothy J. Colton and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1980-12-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Gardiner's public life was rich and long, from his initiation into politics as a Toronto schoolboy before the First World War, through his involvement with the Ontario Conservative party and suburban politics in the 1930s and 1940s, on through his years as first chairman of Metropolitan Toronto (1953-61), to the relinquishing of his last public office in 1979. This is a readable and perceptive biography of the exuberant and powerful politician who captured the public imagination of Toronto and created a legend around himself during his lifetime. The book focuses mainly on Gardiner's experience as founding boss of Metropolitan Toronto. This first metropolitan government in North America was in many ways his personal machine. Gardiner made an indispensable contribution to its effectiveness and to its very survival. He presided over an unprecedented boom in urban development and construction. His public works projects included the first urban expressway in Canada (the Gardiner Expressway). Gardiner's political nickname, 'Big Daddy,' fits him well. He revelled in his reputation as a political bulldozer, and was often described as the Canadian equivalent of Robert Moses, the famous and feared coordinator of construction for New York City. Gardiner was a man for the times, an unusual person whose character seemed to match the requirements of a city bursting at its seams. His lack of interest in public participation generated great controversy and left a lasting impression on Toronto's metropolitan government. Readers concerned with politics and urban government will learn much from Gardiner's experiences and conduct as he wrestled with his political surroundings and with urban policy problems such as planning, housing, and transportation. And this portrait of a dynamic and aggressive man who symbolized the Toronto on a generation ago will appeal to those who remember these years.
