Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a collection of letters concerning the Prague Spring. The Prague Spring was a period of political liberalization in Czechoslovakia during the era of its domination by the Soviet Union after World War II. It began in January 1968, when reformist Slovak Alexander Dubc?ek came to power, and continued until that August when the Soviet Union and members of its Warsaw Pact allies invaded the country to halt the reforms. The Prague Spring reforms were an attempt by Dubc?ek to grant additional rights to the citizens in an act of partial decentralization of the economy and democratization. The freedoms granted included a loosening of restrictions on the media, speech and travel. After the invasion, Czechoslovakia entered a period of normalization -- subsequent leaders attempted to restore the political and economic values that had prevailed before Dubc?ek gained control of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSC?). Gusta?v Husa?k, who replaced Dubc?ek and also became president, reversed almost all of Dubc?ek's reforms. The letters can be divided into various categories -- political statements, letters relaying the personal experiences of the writers to Gusta?v Husa?k, and appeals from relatives of political prisoners written directly to Gusta?v Husa?k, letters written to various Czechoslovak institutions during the Spring, and letters written by the Czechoslovak opposition to media outlets and politicians in the West during the late 1970s.

Book excerpt: This book is a dramatic and highly readable account of the life of a political activist in Czechoslovakia during the period 1952-1990. It covers many aspects of Czechoslovakian culture and history, including orphanages, prisons, protests, strikes, the Soviet invasion of 1968, and the 1989 'Velvet Revolution.' The authors also believe that the telling of Wolf's life is tremendously important in today's society; it demonstrates how the actions of ordinary people can make a difference. While Wolf was being held in jail, thousands of letters piled on the prison warden's desk in Czechoslovakia. It provided Wolf with the feeling that someone cared, and he derived strength from that fact. The letters also showed the prison officials, politicians, and others that their cruel actions were being watched. In the end, the story indicated that when people band together for a good cause, their concerted efforts can make this a better world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the description and analysis of the historical formation of the Czechoslovak and Czech positions in the international system during the course of the 20th century. The first part of the book presents a brief outline of the history of Czechoslovak foreign policy between the First World War and the end of the Cold War. The authors focus on the key periods and turning points in the role of the small Central European state in the international system as well as on the significant actors formulating Czechoslovak foreign policy from the inside and influencing it from the outside. The second, analytical part of the book focuses on the key issues connected to the change of the position of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic after 1993 in world politics, and on the formulation of Czech foreign policy priorities and strategies in the globalized world after the end of bipolar confrontation. The authors analytically investigate the activities of the Czech Republic in (Central) European regional integration processes and the integration of the state in the global system of development cooperation. A great deal of attention is paid to the key political actors of the Czech foreign policy discussion and their impact on the formulation of foreign policy goals. Special attention is paid to the dilemmas of Czech foreign policy: the hesitation between the role of a small state and a medium power and also the span of Czech foreign policy between Atlanticism, anti-Americanism and Europeanization.
