Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introductory discussion of basic chromosome structure and function preceeds the main text on the application of cytogenetic approaches to the analysis of the manipulation of both the genetic make-up and the genetic transmission system of plant breeding material. Analysis using light and electron microscopy, segregations and molecular techniques, yields information for assessing the material before and after manipulation. Much attention is given to quantitative methods. Manipulation not only involves the construction of specific genotypes, but also chromosomal transmission systems. Although analysis and manipulation in the somatic cycle are considered, the focus is on the generative cycle, with emphasis on analysis and subsequent segregation of specifically constructed material. The book is intended for plant breeders and other scientists interested in the analysis and manipulation of breeding material at the chromosomal level. Comparisons with molecular and cell biological approaches are made, and the potential of the various methods is evaluated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earlier books on the handling of plant chromosomes have not included many of the innovations in cytological techniques for many important crops that have become available in recent years, including information on associating genes with chromosomes. The aim of this book is to compile all the plant cytogenetic techniques, previously published in earlier books, into a laboratory manual. The first part of the book describes standard cytological techniques that are routinely used by students. The second part covers methods used for specific crops for which common cytological methods do not work satisfactorily. The third part discusses cytogenetic techniques (cytology and genetics) for physically locating genes on specific chromosomes. This novel book will be highly useful to students, teachers, and researchers as it is a convenient and comprehensive reference for all plant cytogenetic techniques and protocols.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chromosomes represent the main focus of cytogenetics. One of the main challenges of modern-day cytogenetics is to unravel the relation between the genomic content and architecture of chromosomes and their genetic function. Plant species have provided an important contribution to the knowledge of chromosome evolution, and those with large chromosomes have often been used in the study of chromosome behavior. The rapid development of molecular tools in the last few years has greatly furthered advances in elucidating the organization, behavior and evolution of chromosomes. This special issue of Cytogenetic and Genome Research presents an excellent compilation of current research in plant cytogenetics. In a series of review articles experts in the field explain and discuss the organization of chromosomes and the impact of new technologies, the organization and evolution of sex chromosomes and B chromosomes, recent advances in meiosis, and different aspects of chromosome evolution and plant breeding. Providing an excellent update, this book is recommended to researchers, teachers and students in genetics, plant biology and agronomy.

Book excerpt: From Abaxial to Zymogram, make sense out of the confusing terminology of plant breeding! The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Plant Breeding and Related Subjects is the first comprehensive book that contains clear and useful definitions of the terms associated with plant breeding and related scientific/technological disciplines. This well-organized guide defines all of the jargon surrounding this ever-evolving topic and provides helpful tables, examples, and breeding schemes to make the data easy to access and utilize. It also includes a list of crops, weeds, and other important plants that includes common names, scientific descriptions, chromosome numbers, genome constitution, DNA content, and other data where available. From the author: “Until now, it has been difficult to find the precise meaning of many terms and to accurately interpret the specific concepts of plant breeding. Most dictionaries and glossaries available have been highly specific or fragmentary, and no attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive compilation of plant breeding terms. My intention in the creation of this book was to include not only the terms of the present, but also some of the terms used during the long history of plant breeding. In order to serve students, teachers, and research workers as well as plant breeders and seed producers, this book is supplemented by breeding schemes, tables, examples, and a list of crop plants including some details.” The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Plant Breeding and Related Subjects is an ideal single source for precise definitions of the terms used in: agronomy horticulture forestry seed production genetics, molecular genetics, population genetics, and cytogenetics biotechnology biochemistry mutagenesis biometry botany cytology ecology plant evolution laboratory technologies If you make the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Plant Breeding and Related Subjects a part of your collection, you'll find yourself, your colleagues, and your students referring to it again and again. Book excerpt: Plants have played a significant role in the discovery of inheritance principles and many biological phenomena, such as the chromosomal basis of inheritance, the genome dynamics conferred by transposable elements, or the evolutionary implications of chromosomal mutations. While the molecular basis of gene structure and function has been widely studied, many aspects of chromosome structure, its functional significance and evolutionary implications remain to be established. This special issue of Cytogenetic and Genome Research presents an excellent compilation of current research in a wide range of cultivated and wild plant species. The contributions, reviews as well as original articles by experts in the field, reflect representative aspects of nuclear and chromosome organization, behavior in somatic and germ cells, evolution, and manipulation in breeding programs. It is an excellent source of information for investigators and students in plant genetics, plant biology and agronomy.

Book excerpt: Plant breeding, the domestication and systematic improvement of crop species, is the basis of past and present agriculture. Our so called primitive progenitors selected practically all our present-day crop plants, and the improvement wrought through millenia of selection has so changed some of them that in many cases their links to the past have been obliterated. There is no doubt that this ranks among the greatest of human achievements. Although plant breeding has been a continuous empirical activity for as long as humans have forsaken the vagaries and thrill of hunting for the security and toil of agriculture, genetic crop improvement is now very much of a twentieth-century discipline. Its scientific underpinnings date to the beginning of this century with the discovery of Gregor Mendel's classic 1865 paper on the inheritance of seven characters in the garden pea. If any science can be traced to single event, the best example is surely found in the conception of modern genetics that appears in this single creative work. The relationship of plant breeding progress to advances in genetics has become closely entwined. Mendel himself was concerned with crop improvement and worked on schemes for apple and pear breeding. Plant breeding also has claims on other scientific and agricultural disci plines-botany, plant pathology, biochemistry, statistics, taxonomy, entomology, and cytology, to name a few-and has also impinged on our social, ethical, economic, and political consciousness.
