Book Synopsis The Poset of $k$-Shapes and Branching Rules for $k$-Schur Functions by : Thomas Lam
Download or read book The Poset of $k$-Shapes and Branching Rules for $k$-Schur Functions written by Thomas Lam and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors give a combinatorial expansion of a Schubert homology class in the affine Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_{\mathrm{SL}_k}$ into Schubert homology classes in $\mathrm{Gr}_{\mathrm{SL}_{k+1}}$. This is achieved by studying the combinatorics of a new class of partitions called $k$-shapes, which interpolates between $k$-cores and $k+1$-cores. The authors define a symmetric function for each $k$-shape, and show that they expand positively in terms of dual $k$-Schur functions. They obtain an explicit combinatorial description of the expansion of an ungraded $k$-Schur function into $k+1$-Schur functions. As a corollary, they give a formula for the Schur expansion of an ungraded $k$-Schur function.
Book Synopsis Discrete Painlevé Equations by : Nalini Joshi
Download or read book Discrete Painlevé Equations written by Nalini Joshi and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete Painlevé equations are nonlinear difference equations, which arise from translations on crystallographic lattices. The deceptive simplicity of this statement hides immensely rich mathematical properties, connecting dynamical systems, algebraic geometry, Coxeter groups, topology, special functions theory, and mathematical physics. This book necessarily starts with introductory material to give the reader an accessible entry point to this vast subject matter. It is based on lectures that the author presented as principal lecturer at a Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences and National Science Foundation conference in Texas in 2016. Instead of technical theorems or complete proofs, the book relies on providing essential points of many arguments through explicit examples, with the hope that they will be useful for applied mathematicians and physicists.

This book was released on 2010-05-30 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work will serve as an excellent first course in modern analysis. The main focus is on showing how self-similar solutions are useful in studying the behavior of solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations, especially those of parabolic type. This textbook will be an excellent resource for self-study or classroom use.
Download or read book Phylogeny written by Mike Steel and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phylogenetics is a topical and growing area of research. Phylogenies (phylogenetic trees and networks) allow biologists to study and graph evolutionary relationships between different species. These are also used to investigate other evolutionary processes?for example, how languages developed or how different strains of a virus (such as HIV or influenza) are related to each other. This self-contained book addresses the underlying mathematical theory behind the reconstruction and analysis of phylogenies. The theory is grounded in classical concepts from discrete mathematics and probability theory as well as techniques from other branches of mathematics (algebra, topology, differential equations). The biological relevance of the results is highlighted throughout. The author supplies proofs of key classical theorems and includes results not covered in existing books, emphasizes relevant mathematical results derived over the past 20 years, and provides numerous exercises, examples, and figures.
Book Synopsis Discrete Groups, Expanding Graphs and Invariant Measures by : Alex Lubotzky
Download or read book Discrete Groups, Expanding Graphs and Invariant Measures written by Alex Lubotzky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-02-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ?fteen years two seemingly unrelated problems, one in computer science and the other in measure theory, were solved by amazingly similar techniques from representation theory and from analytic number theory. One problem is the - plicit construction of expanding graphs («expanders»). These are highly connected sparse graphs whose existence can be easily demonstrated but whose explicit c- struction turns out to be a dif?cult task. Since expanders serve as basic building blocks for various distributed networks, an explicit construction is highly des- able. The other problem is one posed by Ruziewicz about seventy years ago and studied by Banach [Ba]. It asks whether the Lebesgue measure is the only ?nitely additive measure of total measure one, de?ned on the Lebesgue subsets of the n-dimensional sphere and invariant under all rotations. The two problems seem, at ?rst glance, totally unrelated. It is therefore so- what surprising that both problems were solved using similar methods: initially, Kazhdan’s property (T) from representation theory of semi-simple Lie groups was applied in both cases to achieve partial results, and later on, both problems were solved using the (proved) Ramanujan conjecture from the theory of automorphic forms. The fact that representation theory and automorphic forms have anything to do with these problems is a surprise and a hint as well that the two questions are strongly related.

Book Synopsis Double Affine Hecke Algebras by : Ivan Cherednik
Download or read book Double Affine Hecke Algebras written by Ivan Cherednik and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-03-24 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an essentially self-contained monograph in an intriguing field of fundamental importance for Representation Theory, Harmonic Analysis, Mathematical Physics, and Combinatorics. It is a major source of general information about the double affine Hecke algebra, also called Cherednik's algebra, and its impressive applications. Chapter 1 is devoted to the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations attached to root systems and their relations to affine Hecke algebras, Kac-Moody algebras, and Fourier analysis. Chapter 2 contains a systematic exposition of the representation theory of the one-dimensional DAHA. It is the simplest case but far from trivial with deep connections in the theory of special functions. Chapter 3 is about DAHA in full generality, including applications to Macdonald polynomials, Fourier transforms, Gauss-Selberg integrals, Verlinde algebras, and Gaussian sums. This book is designed for mathematicians and physicists, experts and students, for those who want to master the double Hecke algebra technique.
