Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc, conducted a Level II cultural resources survey of the Gretna Phase II, Levee Enlargement Item on the west (right descending) bank of the Mississippi River near Gretna, Louisiana. Six historic archeological sites and three historic standing structures were recorded. Site 16JE207 is a multicomponent site that may include an antebellum brickyard, part of an historic formal garden, and possibly antebellum drainage system elements. Site 16JE208 is a late nineteenth to early twentieth century wharf used by the Louisiana Cypress Company. Site 16JE209 consists of the remains of one to three circa 1890 double shotgun houses that were torn down after 1960. Site 16JE210 may represent the remains of a late nineteenth and early twentieth century brick kiln. Site 16JE211 is a late nineteenth to early twentieth century deposit of ceramic chemical ring fragments and hand and machine-made bricks. Sites 16JE212 is a deeply buried deposit of nineteenth century artifacts on the modern batture within the historic town of McDonoghville. Sites 16JE208, 16JE209, and 16JE211 lack integrity and no further work is recommended at these sites. Because of redesign of levee setback plans after this study was initiated, Site 16JE210 is no longer in danger of being impacted; therefore, no further archeological testing is required there. However, if future construction threatens the site, it should be tested and fully evaluated. Further testing is recommended at Sites 16JE207 and 16JE212 in order to determine their nature and significance.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of field, archival, and laboratory investigations of four levee and revetment construction rights-of-way located roughly between river miles 93.8 and 81.8 along the right descending bank of the Mississippi River in Orleans Parish, Louisiana. Nine sites were located during archeological survey. Eight of these are ineligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, and no further work is recommended. However, early eighteenth century European and aboriginal ceramics were recovered from a narrow beach at 160R125. This site is located on what was formerly Bienville's west bank concession. Further archeological investigations are recommended at 160R125 to determine if in situ deposits dating to the early eighteenth century exist. A research design for such investigation is presented. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. conducted a cultural resources investigation of three levee and revetment construction rights-of-way located between River Miles 204.0 and 191.0 along the left descending bank of the Mississippi River in Iberville Parish, Louisiana. This project was sponsored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. Within the 13 mi project area, approximately 4.6 mi of batture were surveyed. Four previously unrecorded historic sites (16IV152, 16IV153, 16IV154, and 16IV155) and one previously recorded site (16IV142) were tested. This report describes the historic development of the project area from the initial settlement through the twentieth century, and it presents the methods and results of archeological survey and site testing. Based upon the field investigations and laboratory analyses, no additional testing is recommended for all of the tested sites. None of these sites is eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Five historic sites were discovered including the wooden hull of a ship, a wooden retaining wall, a modern concrete foundation, a trash dump, and an eroding brick scatter. Modern debris scatters were evident along the bank and batture throughout the project area. Book excerpt: During February and March, 1989, a cultural resources survey of the V-levee segment of the West Bank-Hurricane Protection Project, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana was conducted. An Intensive pedestrian survey and shovel testing regime was done within the project corridor, an area of 345 acres. Two archeological sites, two landscape features, and three modern refuse loci are located within the the surveyed area. Brown's Sawmill (16JE217) is the remains of a mid-twentieth century sawmill. It is less than 50 years old, and it is not eligible for inclusion in the National Register; no further testing is recommended. Site 16JE218 consists of an intact shell midden adjacent to Bayou des Familles. Site 16JE218 is a significant site. The first landscape feature is a series of ten agricultural drainage ditches, and a small protection levee, associated with the 1867 - 1875 cultivation of sugarcane within Carter Plantation. The other is a segment of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century Barataria Road. Finally, three loci of modern refuse were identified. Neither the landscape features nor the modern refuse loci are significant cultural resources; no further work is recommended at them. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of archeological survey and testing of a 15.2 x 285 m (1.1 ac) project area situated in southwestern Kenner, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Field work was conducted for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Now Orleans District, prior to planned construction of a levee gap closure along the Jefferson/St. Charles Parish boundary. Field work consisted of pedestrian survey augmented by the systematic excavation of 48 shovel tests. During survey, one previously unrecorded archeological site, Universal Match sits (16JE219), was identified within the project area. This site consisted of remains associated with an early twentieth century house, and a contemporaneous train depot for the Orleans-Kenner Electric Railway Company. Two 1 x 1 m excavation units were placed within the site. Based on data collected during survey, it is apparent that the site has been damaged extensively; it lacks both archeological integrity and research potential. The site does not possess the quality of significance, as defined by National Register of Historic Places criteria. No additional testing of the Universal Match site (16JE219) is recommended.
