Background investigations of area prehistory, history, and geomorphology were used to identify geomorphic features within the project tracts which possessed a high probability for containing archeological resources. Field methods incorporated various levels of survey intensity to accommodate both these high-probability areas and other zones where the likelihood of cultural resources was much smaller. Twelve of the 13 borrow areas were at least partially covered with standing water, preventing implementation of archeological survey over the entire project area. No cultural resources were identified as a result of these investigations. No further archeological investigations are recommended. Supplementary investigations outside the project area attempted study of 3 previously recorded archeological sites and 2 reported locales with the potential to contain cultural resources. Brief study of 16IV4 (Bayou Sorrel /Mounds) resulted in a sketch map presenting the cemetary mound in relation to the protection levee. Survey at 16IV13, recorded as a single-mound site, located a possible second mound. 16IV15 could not be relocated.

Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., conducted a cultural resources survey of 0.8 miles of of the Mississippi River bankline in Iberville Parish for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during August and September, 1985. The project area had been settled by Acadian colonists in the Spanish Colonial Period. Two plantations, Celeste and Belle Grove, developed within the project corridor during the nineteenth century. Six sites were recorded during an intensive pedestrian survey. White Castle Site 1 consists of a disturbed brick scatter; it represents the remains of the Belle Grove warehouse. Site 16 IV 147 consists of a scatter of colonial period habitation debris and an intact architectural feature. The site represents the remains of an Acadian farmstead. Site 16 IV 148 yielded a small collection of Coles Creek period ceramics and historic artifacts but does not possess integrity. Site 16 IV 149 represents the remains of an early nineteenth century farmstead; portions of the site remain intact. Site 16 IV 150 also represents the remains of a late eighteenth/early nineteenth century farmstead, but the site lacks intact cultural deposits. Site 16 IV 151 yielded a small collection of historic and prehistoric artifacts but lacks cultural integrity; the site represents the remains of the Celeste Plantation great house complex. White Castle 1, 16 IV148, 16 IV 150, and 16 IV 151 are not significant cultural resources. No further work is recommended at these sites. Further testing is recommended to determine the significance of 16 IV 147 and 16 IV 149.

Book excerpt: During January and February, 1986, archival, cartographic, historical, oral historical, and archeological research were undertaken to identify the nature and range of variability of expected remains within three segments of the Wax Lake project corridor. On Cypress Island, a former U.S. Naval Timber Reserve, no historic or prehistoric cultural resources were expected or encountered. At Perret Point, on the western shore of Grand Lake, a cypress dragline canal complex was documented; no other cultural resources were found. At the lower tie-in, also on the western margin of Grand lake, no cultural resources were found. Additional survey and testing outside of the project corridor in the vicinity of the lower tie-in resulted in the relocation of the site 16 SMY 37, a prehistoric shell midden site first recorded in 1952. This site is buried below approximately 20 cm of overburden, and no surface remains of that site are present. the site 16 SMY 37 appears to represent a late prehistoric (e.g., Coles Creek period or later) shellfish gathering station; it was almost virtually devoid of artifacts. Shallow, narrow midden deposits there indicate two or three ephemeral episodes of use, rather than periodic utilization or long term habitation. Because of the absence of artifactual or ecofactual remains other than a few Rangia cuneata shells, this site was not viewed as having research potential, or as significant, applying the National Register criteria.
