Book excerpt: The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate any evidence of prehistoric or historic materials, or features that might be within an area from Bluff Street to Prairie Street, along Sanders Creek in Boscobel, Wisconsin. The Corps plans channel modification and the placement of excavated material from bank regrading for flood control purposes. The investigation included surface inspection, shovel testing, soil coring, cut bank profiles, informant interviews, and archival research. No evidence of prehistoric occupation or utilization; or structural remains associated with the early industrial development of Boscobel, or modern historic period was found. Because of these findings, the proposed Boscobel flood control project will have no significant adverse effects on any cultural resources. (Author).

Most of the project area is within the town of Gay Mills and consists of city park property, other city property, county and private property. The archaeological potential of the entire project area is probably high as numerous sites have been recorded on the Kickapoo River including several prehistoric sites in or near the project area. The following recommendation are made: Previously recorded sites should be relocated through shovel testing and their boundaries determined; excavation of the storm sewer should be monitored for the presence of deeply buried cultural material; borrow area or any other project areas to be selected in the future should be surveyed for cultural resources if they have not already been field checked.

Book excerpt: Completed during October, 1981, the historical and standing structure study of the flood control project in Portage, Wisconsin, surveyed structures and sites in the First Ward and below the 800 foot contour level between Cook and the Portage Canal on the northwest; the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad on the north; and MacFarland Road on the west. The level of investigation was a phase I or reconnaissance survey, intended to identify those structures and sites which might be potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. At this stage of the investigation, a fairly detailed literature search provided a local and regional context with which to judge site significance. Because the overall flood control project would affect sites favorably, i, e., protect them from flood damage it was concluded that any of the three project alternatives: the rebuilding of a levee, the construction of ring levees, or waterproofing individual structures; whichever gave more protection; should be selected. Each alternative could require some site mitigation. And, in fact, mitigation projects recommended in the report might, in the end, enhance the site involved.

Book excerpt: The records review and literature search indicated that nothing has been formally recorded regarding the prehistory of the survey area and its vicinity. The field investigations involved 100 percent surface reconnaissance along and across both project areas, supplemented with shovel-testing at 15 m intervals and/or surface inspection of deep disturbances that afforded equivalent subsurface exposure. Results were largely negative. Nothing prehistoric was found--or had previously been found-- by any of the local residents interviewed. An old limestone foundation on the northern side of the creek lies within the project area but does not seem to possess enough structural integrity or distinctive architectural qualities to meet National Register criteria. The registered old farm, as well as another late nineteenth century farmstead, are located adjacent to the creek but would not be impacted by the proposed excavation. The site of the proposed diversion structure has no cultural potential as it features nothing but either very steep slope or low and wet, much meandered flood plain. Judging by the negative results of this survey, the proposed undertakings would not impact any cultural resources of National Register eligibility.
