Book excerpt: An intensive search of historical and archival materials and of cartographic records pertaining to the Montz region was conducted. In addition, a pedestrian survey, detailed mapping of the Montz study area and of the Montz Cemetery, and complete recordation of all surface manifestations at that cemetery were conducted. All standing structures within the Montz study area also were recorded, using the format specified by the Louisiana State Historic Preservation officer. During field work, a total of seventy-four standing structures were recorded and evaluated. No prehistoric or historic archeological sites were located during pedestrian survey of the Montz study area. In addition, review of the prehistoric setting of the project area indicates that aboriginal sites within the region are more likely to be located on the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain than on the natural levee of the Mississippi River, the venue of the current study. Finally, the Montz Cemetery was studied in detail, and the configuration, chronological placement, and individual components of that cemetery, including grave types, funerary architecture, inscriptions, and grave goods were recorded. In summary, no cultural resources were located or identified within the Montz project corridor that exhibit the qualities of significance and integrity requisite for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

The site was included in the investigations of the Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion Project. The actual site location is not shown on any maps in this report in order to avoid facilitating illegal northern bank of the Pump Canal, and east-west channel excavated during the second decade of the twentieth century to drain marshland west of Lake Cataouatche. Material from the canal was placed on top of the in situ archeological deposits at the site. The first documented activity at the site began in 1911 when a group of investors from Holland started the Winter Garden Experimental Farm. Maps and Photographs of the area once occupied by the farm show clearly the square layout of the village and fields that were drained but are now completely flooded by Lake Cataouatche. The farms was located on the west shore of Lake Netherlands in recognition of the newly arrived Dutch farmers promotional literature provided glowing descriptions of the area and of the farming experiment in an attempt to recruit farmers, investors, and businessmen. The demise of the farming experiment was hastened by flooding and hurricanes, culminating in a rather severe storm in 1914. The farm was not a successful venture. In less than three years, the Winter Garden Experimental Farm was defunct. A potential cause of the farm's demise may have been the difficulty of keeping the land dry. The pumps seemingly could not keep the lake waters from seeping into the farmland.

Book excerpt: This report documents the second phase of the cultural resources inventory of the Bonnet Carre' Spillway, St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. Investigations conducted during this project focused on the portion of the spillway north of U.S. Highway 61. Ten separate survey items were examined during these investigations. Three items, representing high probability areas for historic cultural resources, were examined by intensive pedestrian survey and shovel testing. Two survey items, representing high probability areas for prehistoric remains, were examined by deep auger testing. The remaining five items, representing Previously disturbed areas or areas presently suffering disturbance, were examined through boat-based inspection of exposed banklines along these features. No archeological sites or significant historic resources were located during these investigations. The reported locations of three previously recorded sites near the project area, 16 SC 10, 16 SC 11, and 16 SC 12, were visited. Two of these sites, 16 SC 12, could not be relocated. (FR).

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of cultural resource investigations in the Caernarvon Diversion Site, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. An intensive pedestrain survey of the batture and channel of land between Caernarvon Canal and Braithwaite Golf Course was conducted. The examination of the shoreline of Big Mar and the banks of canals adjacent to this lake supplemented the pedestrain survey efforts. The project area was located within the former Caernarvon Plantation. However, no extant portion of this plantation was identified by the survey within the project area. Three archeological sites were discovered during this investigation. Two prehistoric shell middens, 16 PL 148 and 16 PL 149m were discovered on the edges of Big Mar. One historic site, 16 PL 150, was discovered near LA 39. All of the sites were disturbed. None are considered significant cultural resources.
