Book Synopsis Underground Passages by : Jesse Cohn
Download or read book Underground Passages written by Jesse Cohn and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2015-01-26 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exhaustive study of the richly textured "resistance culture" anarchists create to sustain their ideals and identities amid everyday lives defined by capital and the state, a culture prefiguring a post-revolutionary world and allowing an escape from domination even while enmeshed in it. Whether discussing famous artists like Kenneth Rexroth, John Cage, and Diane DiPrima, or relatively unknown anarchist writers, Jesse Cohn clearly links aesthetic dynamics to political and economic ones. This is cultural criticism at its best. Jesse Cohn is the author of Anarchism and the Crisis of Representation: Hermeneutics, Aesthetics, Politics, and an associate professor of English at Purdue University North Central in Indiana.
Book Synopsis Writing Revolution by : Christopher J. Castañeda
Download or read book Writing Revolution written by Christopher J. Castañeda and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2019-10-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth through mid-twentieth centuries, the anarchist effort to promote free thought, individual liberty, and social equality relied upon an international Spanish-language print network. These channels for journalism and literature promoted anarchist ideas and practices while fostering transnational solidarity and activism from Buenos Aires to Los Angeles to Barcelona. Christopher J. Castañeda and Montse Feu edit a collection that examines many facets of Spanish-language anarchist history. Arranged chronologically and thematically, the essays investigate anarchist print culture's transatlantic origins; Latina/o labor-oriented anarchism in the United States; the anarchist print presence in locales like Mexico's borderlands and Steubenville, Ohio; the history of essential publications and the individuals behind them; and the circulation of anarchist writing from the Spanish-American War to the twenty-first century.Contributors: Jon Bekken, Christopher Castañeda, Jesse Cohn, Sergio Sánchez Collantes, María José Domínguez, Antonio Herrería Fernández, Montse Feu, Sonia Hernández, Jorell A. Meléndez-Badillo, Javier Navarro Navarro, Michel Otayek, Mario Martín Revellado, Susana Sueiro Seoane, Kirwin R. Shaffer, Alejandro de la Torre, and David Watson
Book Synopsis Quixotic Modernists by : Louise Ciallella
Download or read book Quixotic Modernists written by Louise Ciallella and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quixotic Modernists gives close readings of two novels by two little-studied writers of the early twentieth century in Spain, Felipe Trigo's Las ingenuas (1901) and Maria Martinez Sierra's Tu eres la paz (1906), in relation to the canonical Tristana by Benito Perez Galdos, Spain's greatest nineteenth-century novelist. This study shows the modern message (regarding gender), and modernist qualities of the prose of these works. Included are discussions of Quijote intertexts, proverbial language and tactics, the angel and the mujer-nina, flower, water, and animal imagery, and visual arts in relation to gender definition. Also included are contemporary responses to the novels and material about the authors' lives and Spain's social conditions in the early twentieth century. Quixotic Modernists integrates these themes into a study of the novelization of difficulties in transforming contemporary gender and class roles. In all three authors' works, this process of change in roles for both men and women becomes a quixotic enterprise, in which artists as/and characters search to reconnect with an elusive material, social body.

Download or read book Marty McGuire written by Kate Messner and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fun & accessible chapter book, an irrepressible, third-grade tomboy is cast in the class play and brings her own chaotic spin to the show. Marty McGuire would rather spend recess catching frogs in the pond than playing dress-up with the other girls in third grade. So when her teacher casts Marty as the princess in the class play, Marty’s absolutely, positively sure that there’s been a huge mistake. But after a special lesson in the art of improvisation, Marty comes up with her OWN plan to IMPROVE the play: Why use stuffed-animal frog onstage when a live one would be so much better? In the end, Marty’s one-of-a-kind performance makes for an unforgettable show. Maybe Marty CAN live happily ever after, after all!
