This book was released on 1948 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document reports results of tests to study the influence of crystal planes of single crystals of 13 metals on the rates of five chemical processes important to the operation or manufacture of lubricated surfaces. These processes are oxidation in air, corrosion by oils, wetting of the surface by stearic acid with copper, nickel, and iron, rearrangement and roughening of the surface due to the action of hot gases, and electrochemical processes including deposition, etching, replacement, and in a few cases, galvanic action. The results, in general, show the process rates to vary with plane in different degrees, with greater differences between the chemical behavior of two planes of the same metal than between polycrystallie surfaces on two different metals being shown in some cases.

The book is composed of several contributions from researchers in the field of liquid crystals that deal with the broadly with aspects of optical devices ranging from a theoretical viewpoints to practical implications of the properties of LCs. This is the first Special Issue devoted solely to recent advances in the rapidly expanding subject of LCs, a unique class of substances that combines both ordered structures with quasi-liquid-like properties. This Special Issue offers a broad perspective of the present state of the art in design and an up-to-date account of the most recent advances and progress in the field of LCs, providing thorough coverage of the demonstrated optical devices and the comprehensive analysis needed by professionals and engineers in the field of LC. The material is carefully structured, providing readers with a solid foundation of the principles, capabilities, use, and limitations of LC optical devices. In addition, this book covers the principles, recent advances and future developments of liquid crystal beam steering devices as well as recent advances in adaptive liquid crystal lenses.

Book excerpt: In this book, academic researchers and technologists will find important information on the interaction of polymeric and non-polymeric inhibitors with a variety of scale forming crystals such as calcium phosphates, calcium carbonate, calcium oxalates, barium sulfate, calcium pyrophosphates, and calcium phosphonates. Moreover, the book delivers information to plant managers and formulators who would like to broaden and deepen their knowledge about processes involved in precipitation of sparingly soluble salts and learn more about the inhibitory aspects of various commercially available materials. Furthermore, experienced researchers will obtain fruitful and inspiring ideas from the easily accessible information about overlapping research areas, which will promote discoveries of new inhibitors (synthetic and/or natural) for the currently unmet challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In crystal chemistry and crystal physics, the relations between the symmetry groups (space groups) of crystalline solids are of special importance. Part 1 of this book presents the necessary mathematical foundations and tools: the fundamentals of crystallography with special emphasis on symmetry, the theory of the crystallographic groups, and the formalisms of the needed crystallographic computations. Part 2 gives an insight into applications to problems in crystal chemistry. With the aid of numerous examples, it is shown how crystallographic group theory can be used to make evident relationships between crystal structures, to set up a systematic order in the huge amount of known crystal structures, to predict crystal structures, to analyse phase transitions and topotactic reactions in the solid state, to understand the formation of domains and twins in crystals, and to avoid errors in crystal structure determinations. A broad range of end-of-chapter exercises offers the possibility to apply the learned material. Worked-out solutions to the exercises can be found at the end of the book.

Book excerpt: This book summarizes and records the recent notable advances in diverse topics in organic crystal chemistry, which has made substantial progress along with the rapid development of a variety of analysis and measurement techniques for solid organic materials. This review book is one of the volumes that are published periodically on this theme. The previous volume, published in 2015, systematically summarized the remarkable progress in assorted topics of organic crystal chemistry using organic solids and organic–inorganic hybrid materials during the previous 5 years, and it has been widely read. The present volume also shows the progress of organic solid chemistry in the last 5 years, with contributions mainly by invited members of the Division of Organic Crystal Chemistry of the Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ), together with prominent invited authors from countries other than Japan.
