Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of Christian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, religious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the historian Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. This project was running from 2013 to 2018 within the Niedersachsen-Israeli Program and financed by the State of Lower Saxony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should I send my kids to public school, or homeschool them with my own family's values? Should we attend the church mission trip or take the kids to their soccer tournament? Should I go out with my co-workers after work or go home to make dinner for my husband? Every day our lives are full of choices, from the mundane "what's for dinner" to the more life altering decisions of taking a new job or moving to a new city. Deane Groseclose learned years ago that it's impossible to make these decisions alone. At each crossroads we come to, if we face those decisions with God by our side, we are much better equipped to do what's right for ourselves, our family, and our future. The devotionals published in "God at the Crossroads" reflect Deane's own personal relationship with God, and her need for His instruction and help navigating the choices and struggles of daily life. Through her own study, she hopes to pass on inspiration to others who are yearning for guidance in daily living and especially for a deeper relationship with Christ. This book contains 100 devotionals to help guide you through daily meditation and spiritual practice. They are grouped into three categories, starting with God's Character. Learning about who God is and how He has been a part of human history provides a foundation for our faith. The second part contains devotionals centered around Finding Hope. Even when we might be in a dark time, through scripture and faith in Christ we can find a way to move forward. The third part, Living Fulfilled, contains devotionals that address the issues to arise during daily life and helps the reader find God in all things. Deane Groseclose is a spiritual counselor with Cross-Purpose Ministries, specializing in marriage and family work and personal growth issues. She and husband Tom have 30 years' experience working with couples and individuals in the Winston-Salem, NC area, as well as nationally through virtual technology. Deane ministered eight years on a church staff and has launched marriage and family ministries in two churches. She has served as a board member and spokesperson for the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools, with numerous public appearances, including The 700 Club, Golden Eagle Broadcasting (ORU), and the national Trinity Broadcasting Network.

Book excerpt: The chase was over. In April 1969, nineteen-year-old Jerry Shepherd stares in his rearview mirror at the two policemen approaching his car. He wants to run, make his escape, perhaps his final escape from life. Then he curls his fingers around the small Bible in his back pocket as the words Peace be still whisper through his head. He holds to those words as he steps from the car to handcuffed and arrested. Angels at the Crossroads is the compelling true story of Shepherd's amazing journey from wrongdoing to redemption. Convicted of a crime he can hardly believe he could have committed, Shepherd faces life in prison and fears not only that he won't survive behind bars, but also that he has stepped beyond the hope of prayer or forgiveness. His parents say no as they cover him with fervent prayers, but Shepherd must find his own way through the jungle of prison life to the people - earth angels - who can help him discover God's love knows no limit. On this pilgrimage to self-acceptance, Shepherd learns to forgive the past and completely and unconditionally love again. If you face a crossroads in your life, Shepherd's inspirational journey may help lead you down a new pathway to a life filled with compassion and love. Visit author Ann H. Book excerpt: When you have a decision to make, are you sure you’re asking the right questions? This forty-day devotional will help you think about where you want to be, who you want to be, and what you should be doing. Most importantly, it will help you learn more about who God is and how He is working in your life. As you read, you’ll consider questions such as: • Which way does God want you to go? • How do you know if you’ve made the right choice? • What is the best option right now? • What are the best options in the future? The author observes that when we must make a big decision, we come to a “burning bush” moment (see Exodus 3), where God tries to get our attention and speak to us. The right decision must be one in which we move forward with Him, seeking to do His work in the world. This is not a journey to ask God to bless any decision but a journey that will help you submit everything to God (Proverbs 16) and answer His call.

Book excerpt: What can the Bible teach us about unconditional, everlasting, life-changing love? Join #1 New York Times bestselling author Dr. Les Parrott as he shows us that we all deserve Love Like That. In this authentic, practical book, Dr. Parrott provides a simple plan to improve all of your relationships--with spouses, family, friends, coworkers, and even strangers. Dr. Parrott takes proven findings from psychology and sociology and blends them with biblical teaching to reveal five transformative ways of relating to people demonstrated by Jesus himself. In Love Like That, Dr. Parrott gives you the tools you need to love like Jesus, because when you do: you become less detached and more mindful you become less exclusive and more approachable you become less judgmental and more grace-full you become less fearful and more bold you become less self-absorbed and more self-giving Dr. Parrott teaches us that loving like Jesus can be a daily reality for anyone who chooses it. Why? Because this love isn't elusive. It isn't pie-in-the-sky. It isn't out of reach or relegated to untouchable saints. It's real. Jesus gives us practical examples of how to love in extraordinary ways. And you're likely closer to it than you know. Praise for Love Like That: "From the first vulnerable sentence, this heart-felt message from Dr. Parrott will compel you to not only be a better person, it will show you exactly how you can do just that." --Dave Ramsey, #1 bestselling author and radio host "Refreshingly honest and incredibly practical. This book is for everyone who wants to love like Jesus but never thought they could. I've personally benefited from this helpful book, and you will too." --Lysa TerKeurst, president of Proverbs 31 Ministries and bestselling author of Forgiving What You Can’t Forget "With an incredible blend of contemporary social science and a deep understanding of Scripture, Les Parrott's writing will help you see beyond what you may be tempted to settle for. And he'll show you the way, step-by-step, to realizing the kinds of relationships we all long for." --Lee Strobel, New York Times bestselling author of The Case for Christ

Book excerpt: A boy doesn't automatically become a man at age 18. What differentiates a man from a boy is the way he lives. A boy lives day to day, wants to be MVP, plays, wants the reassurance of the crowd, and is a predator. A man has a vision for his life, is a team player, works, has the courage to take a minority position, and is a protector. These are the five marks of a man. It's not enough to just know them. A real man aggressively pursues them on a daily basis. Drawing from his own experience and the lives of others, pastor Brian Tome calls on men to examine themselves and take steps in the direction of a fully realized manhood that honors God, respects women, elevates others, and works purposefully for an end greater than their own satisfaction or pleasure. It's time for men to step into their honorable place in the world and lean into a new reality--one defined by strength, purpose, and honor.
