Book excerpt: Ten conversations on current issues and timeless aspects of architecture form an inspirational reader for both professionals and anyone with an interest in architecture. Sergison Bates architects, established in 1996 and today running offices in London, Zurich, and Brussels, have made a name for themselves with projects ranging from housing to care homes, from educational and cultural institutions to urban-scale regeneration designs. Since the outset, the partners have engaged with the debate within the professions and have curated a number of exhibitions about the themes they explore in their teaching and practice. This book features ten conversations Jonathan Sergison, Stephen Bates, and Mark Tuff have conducted with prominent Swiss-based architects, historians, and researchers and in which they reflect with their guests on the many aspects of making, teaching, and writing architecture. Toipcs and guests include: Learning from the European City (Roger Diener), The Provocation of Sustainability (Sascha Roesler), Rethinking Housing Conventions (Jean-Paul Jaccaud), Learning from the Recent Past (Stanislaus von Moos), Thinking and Writing (Martin Steinmann), Exploring Construction (Roger Boltshauser), Shaping Public Space (Maria Conen and Raoul Sigl), Finding and Repurposing (Elisabeth and Martin Boesch), Lessons from Teaching (Ludovica Molo), and Working Methods (Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan). The lively dialogues draw shared experiences in practice, teaching, and research, and form an inspirational reader for anyone with a deeper interest in architectural practice.

Book excerpt: Alfred Neumann (1900-1968) was a Czech architect whose work was wrought in the context of postwar modernism and the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Today, his influence and impact have been largely forgotten, but, in their time, Neumann's original designs received praise and elicited controversy in almost equal measure, offering exciting new possibilities to the modernist mainstream. Space Packed renews attention to this pioneering architect who made a vast contribution to modern architecture and had a lasting impact on Israel's broader architectural culture. Drawing on Neumann's writings and close study of both built and unbuilt projects, Rafi Segal discusses the development of Neumann's architectural theory and methodology and documents his built works from the 1950s and '60s against the backdrop of contemporary architectural discourse and the demands of the newly created State of Israel. The book also features a complete, chronological catalog of Neumann's buildings and designs, fully illustrated, including many previously unpublished photographs, drawings, and sketches. The first book to provide a detailed account of Neumann's work, Space Packed celebrates the career of this highly skilled and innovative architect, and it will be welcomed by architects and architectural historians.

Book excerpt: Now available in paperback, this visual analysis of the colors used in furnishing fabrics and wallpapers from the 15th century to now provides inspiration for designers. This simply structured and highly original book analyzes the palettes used by designers in the creation of furnishing fabrics and wallpapers from the 15th century to the present day. The colors used in each pattern are presented in a simple proportional grid, giving a clear understanding of hues that have been expertly combined at different periods to create the designs we continue to admire and emulate. Spectrum opens with a brief introduction by interior design expert Ros Byam Shaw, exploring the history of color as used in interiors. Arranged chronologically, fabrics and wallpapers are reproduced on double-page spreads, accompanied by brief, narrative-style captions that provide details about their significance in the context of interior design. Unique in such a book are the color grids shown beside each pattern, including CMYK references that allow designers to replicate these colors in their own work.

Book excerpt: Worldwide, more and more people are living in cities, with suburbs conceived as appendages to the city, rather than being part of the city system, which is densely populated and offers a full range of services. But suburbs are not the city spread too thin, and in fact hold potential for a lived complexity as satisfying as that assumed to be available in inner cities. Just as the ecological function of wetlands was ignored by modernist planning, and swamps once-drained are now recognised as vital to water cycles, suburbs are increasingly recognised as part of a city’s wellbeing with their own alternative ideology and opportunities for urbanity and ecological sustainability. Suburbia Reimagined shows how such subdivision structures can offer new possibilities for sustainably integrating living between generations and between established and arriving migrant communities. The authors worked locally and internationally with university campuses, shopping centres, hospitals, airports, and other large entities spread through suburbia, to identify a broad range of suburban situations that have been modified to ensure that residents have a full access to amenities and services. The book addresses the history and design of suburbia, from the post-war soldier settlements of the 40s and 50s to the university hinterlands of Silicon Valley in order to reappraise the locked potential within such subdivision patterns. The authors propose a new model forward, examining case studies ranging from repurposed malls and railways for ecological sustainability to cul-de-sacs as social units and post-industrial factory conversions, ultimately showing the nascent patterns in suburbia that have the potential to support a rich life for all age groups.
