Je constate par ailleurs que les chercheurs de haut niveau auxquels s'adresse un prix prestigieux sont tous d'un statut social tel qu'ils ont déjà en abondance et le bien-être matériel et le prestige scientifique, ainsi que tous les pouvoirs et prérogatives qui vont avec. Mais n'est-il pas clair que la surabondance des uns ne peut se faire qu'aux dépens du nécessaire des autres ? 3. Les travaux qui me valent votre bienveillante attention datent d'une époque où je faisais partie du milieu scientifique et où je partageais pour l'essentiel son esprit et ses valeurs. J'ai quitté ce milieu et, sans renoncer pour autant à la recherche, je m'en suis éloigné intérieurement de plus en plus. Or, l'éthique du métier scientifique s'est dégradée à un degré tel que le pillage pur et simple entre confrères (et surtout aux dépens de ceux qui ne sont pas en position de pouvoir se défendre) est devenu quasiment une règle générale, et qu'il est en tout cas toléré par tous. Dans ces conditions, accepter d'entrer dans le jeu des prix et des récompenses serait aussi donner ma caution à un esprit et à une évolution que je reconnais comme profondément malsains. C'est cette troisième raison qui est pour moi, et de loin, la plus sérieuse.

However, many challenges remain. Confrontational episodes in the relationship of the local media with the political sphere, the rise of sensationalist journalism, increased concentration of ownership in the industry as well as market uncertainties have taken their toll on a profession which often prides itself in the defence of freedom of speech and democracy. The media conference jointly organised by UNESCO and the University of Mauritius in 2010 offered a singular opportunity the first time ever in Mauritius for media practitioners, regulators, lawyers, politicians, academics and civil society to discuss the state of the media as part of the countrys democratic systems. Media roles and functions, the legal and regulatory framework, self-regulation, market issues and new trends such as citizen journalism were thoroughly examined. This book brings together papers and conclusions from that conference. Whilst much ground has been covered especially since the emergence of private radio stations, much still needs to be done to move towards a true media democracy. The book points to media governance, access to information, training of and professionalism among media practitioners as areas of unfinished business.
