This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soils need to be classified so they can be identified and mapped. The classification of soils in New Zealand is described in two publications in the Landcare Research Science Series: The New Zealand Soil Classification (Hewitt 2010) and this new report by Webb and Lilburne, Criteria for defining the soil family and soil sibling. The New Zealand Soil Classification classifies NZ soils into 15 soil orders, each of which is divided successively into soil groups and subgroups; this provides an important framework to understand the occurrence and broad properties of soils in the landscape. Criteria for defining the soil family and soil sibling defines the next two levels of classification: soil families and siblings. The sibling is the primary entity depicted on soil maps. Families and siblings separate soils into well defined classes that define each soil's physical composition. The family criteria separate soils on the basis of three criteria: the nature of the soil profile material to 1.0 metre depth, the dominant texture in the upper 0.6 m, and minimum permeability within 1.0 m depth. The sibling criteria separate soils mainly according to the composition of horizons that make up the soil profile.

It presents model approaches for a number of ecological and socio-economic landscape indicators, and also describes spatial decision support systems (DSS), frameworks, and model-based tools, which are prerequisites for deriving sustainable decision and solution strategies for the protection of comprehensively functioning landscapes. While it mainly focuses on the latest research findings in regional modelling and DSS in Europe, it also highlights the work of scientists from Russia. The book is intended for landscape modellers, scientists from various fields of landscape research, university teaching staff, and experts in landscape planning and management, landscape conservation and landscape policy.

Each chapter, illustrated with diagrams and photographs in colour, includes a summary of the main features of the soils in the order, their genesis and relationships with landscapes, their key properties including examples of physical and chemical characteristics, and their classification, use, and management. The book then features a chapter on soils in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica and concludes by considering New Zealand soils in a global context, soil-formation pathways, and methods used in New Zealand to evaluate soils and assist in land-management decisions. Information about how to access detailed information via links to the Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research website is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2023 Honorable Mention, Isis Duarte Book Prize, Haiti/ Dominican Republic section (LASA) After revolutionary cooperation between Dominican and Haitian majorities produced independence across Hispaniola, Dominican elites crafted negative myths about this era that contributed to anti-Haitianism. Despite the island’s long-simmering tensions, Dominicans and Haitians once unified Hispaniola. Based on research from over two dozen archives in multiple countries, Siblings of Soil presents the overlooked history of their shared imperial endings and national beginnings from the 1780s to 1822. Haitian revolutionaries both inspired and aided Dominican antislavery and anti-imperial movements. Ultimately, Santo Domingo's independence from Spain came in 1822 through unification with Haiti, as Dominicans embraced citizenship and emancipation. Their collaboration resulted in one of the most unique and inclusive forms of independence in the Americas. Elite reactions to this era formed anti-Haitian narratives. Racial ideas permeated the revolution, Vodou, Catholicism, secularism, and even Deism. Some Dominicans reinforced Hispanic and Catholic traditions and cast Haitians as violent heretics who had invaded Dominican society, undermining the innovative, multicultural state. Two centuries later, distortions of their shared past of kinship have enabled generations of anti-Haitian policies, assumptions of irreconcilable differences, and human rights abuses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a period of intense work on national memory cultures, we are observing a growing interest in memory both as a social and an individual practice. Memory studies tend to focus on a particular field of memory processes, namely those connected with war, persecution and expulsion. In this sense, the memory - or rather the trauma - of the Holocaust is paradigmatic for the entire research field. The Holocaust is furthermore increasingly understood as constitutive of a global memory community which transcends national memories and mediates universal values. The present volume diverges from this perspective by dealing also with everyday subjects of memory. This allows for a more complete view of the interdependencies between public and private memory and, more specifically, public and family memory.
