Book excerpt: Dumas's 'Celebrated Crimes' was not written for children. The novelist has spared no language—has minced no words—to describe the violent scenes of a violent time. "In some instances facts appear distorted out of their true perspective, and in others the author makes unwarranted charges. It is not within our province to edit the historical side of Dumas, any more than it would be to correct the obvious errors in Dickens's Child's History of England. The careful, mature reader, for whom the books are intended, will recognize, and allow for, this fact. The contents of these volumes of 'Celebrated Crimes', as well as the motives which led to their inception, are unique. They are a series of stories based upon historical records, from the pen of Alexandre Dumas, pere, when he was not "the elder," nor yet the author of D'Artagnan or Monte Cristo, but was a rising young dramatist and a lion in the literary set and world of fashion. Dumas, in fact, wrote his 'Crimes Celebres' just prior to launching upon his wonderful series of historical novels, and they may therefore be considered as source books, whence he was to draw so much of that far-reaching and intimate knowledge of inner history which has perennially astonished his readers. The Crimes were published in Paris, in 1839-40, in eight volumes, comprising eighteen titles—all of which now appear in the present carefully translated text. The success of the original work was instantaneous. Dumas laughingly said that he thought he had exhausted the subject of famous crimes, until the work was off the press, when he immediately became deluged with letters from every province in France, supplying him with material upon other deeds of violence! The subjects which he has chosen, however, are of both historic and dramatic importance, and they have the added value of giving the modern reader a clear picture of the state of semi-lawlessness which existed in Europe, during the middle ages. "The Borgias, the Cenci, Urbain Grandier, the Marchioness of Brinvilliers, the Marchioness of Ganges, and the rest—what subjects for the pen of Dumas!" exclaims Garnett. Space does not permit us to consider in detail the material here collected, although each title will be found to present points of special interest. The first volume comprises the annals of the Borgias and the Cenci. The name of the noted and notorious Florentine family has become a synonym for intrigue and violence, and yet the Borgias have not been without stanch defenders in history....

Book Synopsis The Pilgrim Edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens: Volume 6: 1850-1852 by : Charles Dickens
Download or read book The Pilgrim Edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens: Volume 6: 1850-1852 written by Charles Dickens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1965 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents 1,592 letters, 668 of them previously unpublished, for the years 1850 to 1852. This was a time of great activity for Dickens, who completed the serial publication of David Copperfield, began work on Bleak House, successfully established the weekly Household Words (in which his own serial A Child's History of England appeared), and wrote about 100 articles and stories for the journal, including many uncollected pieces. In April 1851 he and Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton founded the Guild of Literature and Art, a scheme to help writers and artists. He also suffered a number of personal blows: the deaths of his father, his baby daughter Dora, and two of his close friends, Richard Watson and Alfred D'Orsay; there was also anxiety over the illness of his wife Catherine.

Book Synopsis Contemporary German Crime Fiction by : Thomas W. Kniesche
Download or read book Contemporary German Crime Fiction written by Thomas W. Kniesche and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion to contemporary German crime fiction for English-speaking audiences is overdue. Starting with the earlier Swiss “classics” Glauser and Dürrenmatt and including a number of important Austrian authors, such as Wolf Haas and Heinrich Steinfest, this volume will cover the essential writers, genres, and themes of crime fiction written in German. Where necessary and appropriate, crime fiction in media other than writing (TV-series, movies) will be included. Contemporary social and political developments, such as gender issues, life in a multicultural society, and the afterlife of German fascism today, play a crucial role in much of recent German crime fiction. A number of contributions to this volume will comment on the literary reflection of these issues in the texts. The goal of the volume is to make available to English-speaking audiences, to students, teachers and to a wider circle of interested readers, a series of articles on genres, topics, authors, and texts that will help them understand the scope and depth of German crime fiction, its ties to international traditions and also the specificity of the German context, its historical development and contemporary situation.

Download or read book Celebrated Crimes, Vol. 5 (Classic Reprint) written by Alexandre Dumas and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebrated Crimes, Vol. 5 If you chance to go to Rome and visit the Villa Pamfili, you will, in all probability, after passing some little time beneath its tall pines and along the shores of its watercourses, enjoying the shade and cool air which are so hard to find in the capital of Christendom, descend again toward Monte Janiculo by a lovely road which will take you by the Pauline Fountain. Having inspected that monument and paused for a moment on the terrace of the Church of St. Peter-in-Montorio, which commands a view of the whole city, you will visit the cloister of Bramante, in the centre of which is a little temple, half Greek and half Christian, its base several feet below the ground level, on the very spot where St. Peter was crucified. Then you will go up through a side door into the church itself. There the courteous cicerone will point out to you, in the first chapel at the right, the "Christ Scourged," of Sebastiano del Piombo, and in the third chapel at the left, a "Christ at the Sepulchre," by Fiamingo.
