Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Conduct: Or the Influence of Religious Beliefs on Morals A similar illusion has long existed about Christianity as an institution. Historians, philosophers, divines, novelists, poets, and journalists have for centuries described Christianity as the one perfect blessing con ferred on mankind. Before the Christian Church came into being as a spiritual, social, and political force, the world was sunk in darkness and degradation; to that Church we owe the dawn of true morality, the beginning of freedom for body and soul, and every manifestation of the good, true, and beautiful in human life. Progress apart from Christianity is unimaginable. Take away the foundations of the Christian creed or the pillars of the Christian Church, and the world Will sink into the utter barbarism from Which Christianity raised it. Book Synopsis The Creed of Buddha (Annotated Edition) by : Edmond Holmes
Download or read book The Creed of Buddha (Annotated Edition) written by Edmond Holmes and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive annotation of more than 10.000 words about the history and basics of Buddhism, written by Thomas William Rhys Davids * an interactive table-of-contents * perfect formatting for electronic reading devices The author of " The Creed of Buddha " can safely say that no better exposition of Buddhism has ever been given to the world. It is sympathetic, it is scholarly, and it is complete. Between east and west, says the author, a gulf has been fixed, a gulf created by basic ideas, hollowed out by the erosive action of speculative thought. The Western mind takes for granted the reality of outward things. The Eastern mind attributes the only reality to the soul. All else is maya, illusion. And there are very few that can bridge thatgulf. In the East, where the soul is the supreme and fundamental reality, the identification of God with the world-soul, or soul of universal Mature, is the outcome of a movement of thought which is at once natural and logical. This divine soul is the only real existence: by comparison with it all outward things are shadows, and all inward things, so far as they hold aloof from the all-embracing consciousness, are dreams. The worship of the supernatural, such as is to be found in Christianity, often ends in the despiritualization of Nature. which becomes merely the world without and therefore opposed to the Supernatural, which becomes the dwelling place of God .

Book excerpt: Philosophy is, in its essence, the quest of reality. In the attempt to determine what is real, one has to choose, in the first instance, between the percipient self and the things that it perceives. This choice may seem to be purely metaphysical, but sooner or later it becomes a moral choice and one which is decisive of the chooser's destiny.

Download or read book The Vision of God written by K. E. Kirk and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2023-04-27 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the 1928 Bampton Lectures, The Vision of God was the first of Kenneth E. Kirk's three major books on moral theology. Drawing inspiration from the ascetic tradition of Christianity, Kirk advocates the priority of worship in ethical thought. Beginning with the sixth beatitude, he places the visio Dei front and centre throughout, placing himself in a eudaimonistic tradition that ranges from Irenaeus to Aquinas and the Shorter Catechism. Worship, he shows, offers the opportunity to discover and acknowledge something more valuable than the self, and thus contains the key to moral instruction. Although Kirk published an expanded 'complete edition' of The Vision of God in 1931, he notes in the preface to the shorter text presented here that 'what remains approximates to, though it is not quite identical with, the actual lectures as originally delivered.' The reader therefore has in their hands the essence of Kirk's thesis, which continues to prompt debate today.
