Book Synopsis Understanding the Social Economy by : Jack Quarter
Download or read book Understanding the Social Economy written by Jack Quarter and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suitable for courses addressing community economic development, non-profit organizations, co-operatives and the social economy more broadly, the second edition of Understanding the Social Economy expands on the authors’ ground-breaking examination of organizations founded on a social mission – social enterprises, non-profits, co-operatives, credit unions, and community development organizations. While the role of the private and public sectors are very much in the public light, the social economy is often taken for granted. However, try to imagine a society without the many forms of organizations that form the social economy: social service organizations, arts and recreation organizations, ethno-cultural associations, social clubs, self-help groups, universities and colleges, hospitals and other healthcare providers, foundations, housing co-operatives, or credit unions. Not only do these organizations provide valuable services, but they employ many people, and purchase goods and services. They are both social and economic entities. Understanding the Social Economy illustrates how organizations in the social economy interact with the other sectors of the economy and highlights the important social infrastructure that these organizations create. The second edition contains six new case studies as well three new chapters addressing leadership and strategic management, and human resources management. A much-needed work on an important but neglected facet of organizational studies, Understanding the Social Economy continues to be an invaluable resource for the classroom and for participants working in the social sector.
Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of the Cooperative Movement by : Jack Shaffer
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Cooperative Movement written by Jack Shaffer and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1999-08-31 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives are found everywhere, doing all kinds of things. They are critical elements in the economies of a large number of countries around the world, large and small. Their affairs are carried out by elected leadership that runs the gamut from the illiterate to the scholarly. Their membership is made up of people of all socio-economic backgrounds. It is those members who, through their support and their needs, determine the successes and failures of cooperatives. But cooperatives as a popular movement will also be judged in other ways. A judgment will be made on the totality of their impact: local, national, and international. People will ask about how they helped ameliorate the economic and social problems of the dispossessed. But they will also inquire about their influence on economic systems, whether these were made more humane, egalitarian, and inclusive in their benefits because of cooperative principles and practices. Their impact on the international order will be judged collectively by how they contributed more than resolutions to peace, to justice, and to human inclusiveness. This volume provides snapshot views of the cooperative movement in all its diversity. The only single source one can consult to find so much information on the different kinds of cooperatives, significant figures, including philosophers, pioneers, officials, and leaders, and the situation in a large number of countries. With a list of acronyms, an extensive chronology, appendixes, and a comprehensive bibliography.

Download or read book Hard Choices written by Jerry Buckland and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When low-income city dwellers lack access to mainstream banking services, many end up turning to 'fringe banks,' such as cheque-cashers and pawnshops, for some or all of their financial transactions. This predicament of 'financial exclusion' - faced by those underserved by conventional financial institutions - is comprehensively examined in Jerry Buckland's powerful study, Hard Choices. The first account of the nature and causes of financial exclusion in Canada, Hard Choices thoroughly integrates economic and social data on consumer choice, bank behaviour, and government policy. Buckland demonstrates why the current two-tier system of banking is becoming increasingly dysfunctional, especially in the context of new credit products that aggravate income inequality and stifle local economic growth. Featuring a foreword by esteemed economics scholar John P. Caskey, Hard Choices presents pragmatic policy improvements on both the public and private levels that can promote and build financial inclusion for all.

Book excerpt: In this special quarterly supplement to the International Financial Statistics, the IMF is publishing the monetary statistics for those member countries that have commenced the reporting, on a regular basis, of monetary data that accord with the methodology in the IMF’s Monetary and Financial Statistics Manual (MFSM), 2000. The format of monetary data reported in the European Central Bank’s (ECB) framework, though like the Standardized Report Forms (SRF) format, is designed to accommodate the additional disaggregation required by the ECB. Countries implementing the ECB’s monetary data framework include those that belong to European Economic and Monetary Union (Euro Area), several other members of the European Union, and other European countries that have adopted the ECB’s framework. Additional countries will be included in future issues of this Supplement, as more countries implement the reporting of SRF-based data. The Supplement will continue to be published until implementation of the SRF-based reporting has been completed by most member countries.

Book Synopsis Banking Structures in Major Countries by : George G. Kaufman
Download or read book Banking Structures in Major Countries written by George G. Kaufman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing globalization of financial markets has increased the import ance to users of financial services, policy-makers and financial analysts of understanding the structure and operation of banking systems in other countries as well as that in their own country. This volume contributes to such an understanding. The structure and operation of the banking system are described for 10 important countries, plus the European Economic Community, under one cover. The contributing authors are knowledgable and widely respected experts. The author, or at least one of the coauthors, of each chapter is a resident of the country described. Each chapter follows a broadly similar outline, although the attention devoted to any particular area varies substantially according to authors' perceptions of its relative importance in the particular country. The chapters spotlight the similarities and differences among the structures. The volume should serve as both a handy and authoritative reference guide for practitioners, regulators and students of international banking. An early benefit of the book was an international conference held in Chicago in the fall of 1989 on the world integration of financial markets. A number of the authors of the chapters presented brief versions of their papers. The conference was sponsored jointly by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the MidAmerica Institute. The audience was primarily senior officers and regulators of financial institutions in the midwest. The conference generated considerable interest in both the subject matter and the contents of this book.
