Book excerpt: In his critically acclaimed bestseller Shadow Divers, Robert Kurson explored the depths of history, friendship, and compulsion. Now Kurson returns with another thrilling adventure–the stunning true story of one man’s heroic odyssey from blindness into sight. Mike May spent his life crashing through. Blinded at age three, he defied expectations by breaking world records in downhill speed skiing, joining the CIA, and becoming a successful inventor, entrepreneur, and family man. He had never yearned for vision. Then, in 1999, a chance encounter brought startling news: a revolutionary stem cell transplant surgery could restore May’s vision. It would allow him to drive, to read, to see his children’s faces. He began to contemplate an astonishing new world: Would music still sound the same? Would sex be different? Would he recognize himself in the mirror? Would his marriage survive? Would he still be Mike May? The procedure was filled with risks, some of them deadly, others beyond May’s wildest dreams. Even if the surgery worked, history was against him. Fewer than twenty cases were known worldwide in which a person gained vision after a lifetime of blindness. Each of those people suffered desperate consequences we can scarcely imagine. There were countless reasons for May to pass on vision. He could think of only a single reason to go forward. Whatever his decision, he knew it would change his life. Beautifully written and thrillingly told, Crashing Through is a journey of suspense, daring, romance, and insight into the mysteries of vision and the brain. Robert Kurson gives us a fascinating account of one man’s choice to explore what it means to see–and to truly live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I’ll never forget the officer walking towards me, handcuffs dangling from his fingers, the pinch of skin as the metal clicked around my wrists, or my cheeks flushing hot with shame as I tried to move gracefully in my black, Ann Taylor dress and high heels. With my hands cuffed behind my back, on what felt like the longest walk of my life, I felt the hot stare of every eye in the courtroom as the cop escorted me to my holding cell in the basement. There I was, a fit, healthy woman, a successful entrepreneur, a mom, and a well-known member of my community. What the hell was I doing there? Crashing into Grace is a book designed to help readers put down their shields of perfectionism and people-pleasing, surrender their weapons of numbing and escape, and walk the path of becoming the people they were born to be. Kristin Joy Swarcheck has learned firsthand what it takes to rise from the ashes and lead with her whole heart. This book is designed to help readers drop the shame, own their stories, lead with compassion, and fully embody their worth. Whether this is your first exploration of this hero’s journey or if you are a lifelong student of personal development, this book will transform your relationship with yourself and the world around you. Finally, with ease and grace, you will be able to live a richer, more meaningful life—one where you are no longer asleep at the wheel. “When we are willing to drop the armor and weapons that imprison us from a life of abundance, we discover we’ve been holding the keys all along and simply have been asleep at the wheel. Self-awareness is the fuel that fills our tank and enables us to steer our life to the destination of our dreams.” —KRISTIN JOY SWARCHECK, M.Ed.

Book excerpt: Two ten-year-old Irish American girls take the reader on a journey beginning in 1955, when they are challenged by Salvie Baldwin to learn about the historic 1954 US Supreme Court decision declaring segregated schools unconstitutional. After a tragic fall on a track field, sixteen-year-old Erin O'Hara is told that she must make a life-or-death decision to have surgery to save her left leg and her life. Desperately ill and weary from the fight to hang on, she thinks of what she and her best friend, Lily McCarey, have learned about the courage of the Negroes in fighting for fair independence and acceptance, as they are in the middle of America's civil rights movement. They have both been clinging to that shifty rope bridge called faith. It is now 1963 and the worst is yet to come. Joy O'Hara, Erin's mother, keeps her ambitious husband and three daughters within her sight, delivering unconditional love. In her wisdom, she hires Mayleen Watson, a good woman, to look after her children and her home. But her true intent is to help her racially prejudiced husband move to a place of honest acceptance, while keeping her children colorblind. Mayleen, who swore she would never work for a white family, takes them into her heart and, when necessary, delivers tough love through sass and laughter. While representing Colorado in the 1963 America's Junior Miss Pageant, Erin's beliefs are sorely tested but reinforced by divine miracles. As life spins ahead, it is discovered that deeply held faith in God is the bedrock of everyone's salvation. Crashing into the Third Heaven is a testament to the power of faith, courage, and forgiveness. First-time novelist Janis Baker lays down a foundation of strong, believable characters who exemplify the capabilities of women while under fire.

Book excerpt: Examines the incidence rates of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes that involved hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and compares the results to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles under similar circumstances. State crash files from the Nat. Highway Traffic Safety Admin.¿s State Data System were used to measure the incidence rates of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes by HEVs and to compare the incidence rate with their peer ICE vehicles. This study found that pedestrian and bicyclist crashes involving both HEVs and ICE vehicles commonly occurred on roadways, in zones with low speed limits, during daytime and in clear weather, with higher incidence rates for HEVs when compared to ICE vehicles. Book excerpt: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the federal agency responsible for reducing accidents, deaths, and injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes on the nation's highways, estimates that over 6 million automobile accidents occurred in the United States in 1999. To repair crash-damaged vehicles, consumers spent over $8 billion and bought over 61 million sheet metal and plastic body parts (including exterior fenders, bumpers, hoods, and doors). Consumers and body shops that repair crash-damaged vehicles have a choice in many instances of buying new replacement parts from either the original equipment manufacturer or other sources, commonly called after market manufacturers. These after market manufacturers produce their parts by copying the design of the original vehicle parts.
