This book was released on 1998 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combination traffic and bicycle bridge rail was developed and crash tested. The combination bridge rail was constructed with a standard New Jersey safety shaped barrier and special steel panels formed from tubular steel posts and rails, and square vertical spindle bars. Two cables were installed inside the tubular rails to prevent detachment of large pieces of debris from causing hazardous conditions for vehicles and pedestrians below. Although the crash tested bridge rail was constructed using the New Jersey safety shape, it is believed that this combination traffic/bicycle bridge rail could be easily adapted to other safety shape barriers or rectangular parapets with no need for further crash testing. Due to the modular nature of the steel panel sections, the combination traffic/bicycle bridge rail can be repaired very easily following a vehicular impact. Two full-scale vehicle crash tests were performed on Minnesota's combination traffic/bicycle bridge railing. The tests were conducted and reported in accordance with the requirements specified in NCHRP Report No. 350, "Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features" (1993). The safety performance of the combination traffic/bicycle bridge rail was determined to be acceptable according to Test Level 4 of the NCHRP Report No. 350 criteria

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a literature search, findings of a survey on the current state of historic bridge rehabilitation or replacement decision making by state and local transportation agencies, and nationally applicable decision-making guidelines for historic bridges. The guidelines are intended to be used as the protocol for defining when rehabilitation of historic bridges can be considered prudent and feasible and when it is not based on engineering and environmental data and judgments. The guidelines include identification of various approaches to bringing historic bridges into conformance with current design and safety guidelines/standards, and the effect or implications of remedial action on historical significance. There are currently no such nationally applicable decision-making guidelines, but there are a variety of state and local processes and policies for managing historic bridges. Effective practices for the various processes inform the nationally applicable guidelines. The guidelines are in narrative and matrix format.

Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.
