Although Sumeria was the nerve center for international trade, it had to import most everything from northern Mesopotamia, namely Armenia. Why have not the Armenians claimed their rightful place among the nations of Mesopotamia? The historical maze of humankind is fraught with mysteries, controversies, and inconsistencies.

Book excerpt: Humankind has a profound and complex relationship with the sea, a relationship that is extensively reflected in biology, psychology, religion, literature and poetry. The sea cradles and soothes us, we visit it often for solace and inspiration, it is familiar, being the place where life ultimately began. Yet the sea is also dark and mysterious and often spells catastrophe and death. The sea is a set of contradictions: kind, cruel, indifferent. She is a blind will that will 'have her way'. In exploring this most capricious of phenomena, David Farrell Krell engages the work of an array of thinkers and writers including, but not limited to, Homer, Thales, Anaximander, Heraclitus, Plato, Aristotle, Hölderlin, Melville, Woolf, Whitman, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Schelling, Ferenczi, Rank and Freud. The Sea explores the significance in Western civilization of the catastrophic and generative power of the sea and what humankind's complex relationship with it reveals about the human condition, human consciousness, temporality, striving, anxiety, happiness and mortality.

Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book celebrates the diversity, importance, and intrinsic beauty of soils around the world and helps the reader to understand the ways that soils are related to the landscapes in which they form. The book unravels the complex bond between humans and soils and the importance of soils in our cultures and everyday lives. Soil is critical to terrestrial life on earth. It underpins human food supply and provides materials on which we build our lives. Soil is out of sight and often out of mind, thus easy to overlook. Yet soil has tremendous variety and intrinsic beauty for those who care to look. Soil contains a memory of the events that have shaped the landscape and the environment. With help you can look at a soil and understand the stories that it has to tell. Written in a reader-friendly way, Celebrating Soil is a wonderful resource for farmers, horticulturalists, naturalists, students and others who are concerned about how soils are formed, work and are used.

Book excerpt: Wood Wisdom is passed to the reader as he/she follows a love story between a Tree Nymph and her Locust Tree from sprouting to beyond life. During this journey, the Nymph and Tree meet the "Walking Trees" and covertly engage in a game played on white and black squares. Love grows while playing this game as Wood Wisdom is passed from the Nymph and Locust Tree to the children who come to play within the Tree's hollow. Consequently, the joy felt by children returns love to the Nymph and Tree. This combination of love transcends all boundaries. In conclusion, a secret and safe place is created for all children, big and small. Here they can go to ask their questions, take their feelings and share their secret thoughts. Here they know they are loved. Here a myth is born. My name is Master Wind. You know me. You breathe me. I am air. I am a part of you and you are a part of me. We are inseparable. I hear your voice, I feel your heart and I sense your need as you sense my desire to fulfill that need. The universe is vast and there are many mysteries that cannot be seen, heard, or held. I am part of that universe. You cannot see me, hear me or hold me most of the time. Only when I move am I acknowledged. I am moving now. My/our mysterious universe has many stories. One of which, I am going to tell you. It has to do with imagination and bringing your heart's desire from my world into yours. You are magical beings and nothing is impossible. This is your story from the beginning of time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A manifesto for a radically different philosophy and practice of manufacture and environmentalism "Reduce, reuse, recycle" urge environmentalists; in other words, do more with less in order to minimize damage. But as this provocative, visionary book argues, this approach perpetuates a one-way, "cradle to grave" manufacturing model that dates to the Industrial Revolution and casts off as much as 90 percent of the materials it uses as waste, much of it toxic. Why not challenge the notion that human industry must inevitably damage the natural world? In fact, why not take nature itself as our model? A tree produces thousands of blossoms in order to create another tree, yet we do not consider its abundance wasteful but safe, beautiful, and highly effective; hence, "waste equals food" is the first principle the book sets forth. Products might be designed so that, after their useful life, they provide nourishment for something new-either as "biological nutrients" that safely re-enter the environment or as "technical nutrients" that circulate within closed-loop industrial cycles, without being "downcycled" into low-grade uses (as most "recyclables" now are). Elaborating their principles from experience (re)designing everything from carpeting to corporate campuses, William McDonough and Michael Braungart make an exciting and viable case for change.
