The last of the Wild West’s famous outlaws, Johnny Wargo and Dakota Sam, make a daring escape from a small west Texas jail. In a desperate effort to lay low, they make the hard decision to go their separate ways. Although occasional sightings were whispered from time to time, the legendary pair eventually faded into history. Or, so it seemed. 1929. Retired after twenty-five years as a St Louis school superintendent, Frank, now in his sixties, enjoys the summers with his wife, Nancy, in the northern Illinois community of Brookfield. But, all is not good in Brookfield. Prohibition has spurred the growth of organized crime and the Chicago area town of Brookfield has become a new target. Protection rackets are constantly sucking hard earned cash from struggling businesses in the area. Frank’s brother in law owns the local hardware store and is victimized on a regular basis by local mobsters while the police look the other way. In a desperate attempt to covertly rid the community of these gangsters, Frank contacts his old partner in crime, Dakota Sam, who had been living quietly in Wyoming. Frank’s last letter to Sam asks him to come to Brookfield to help with an urgent matter. Little did Sam realize what he was getting himself into. The reunion of these elder cowboys from the old west and picking a fight with mobsters in the big city, leads to some comical situations that ends in an epic battle that certainly trumps the gunfight at the OK Corral. Some might compare the chaos that followed to that of the Great Chicago Fire.

Book excerpt: Nicholas Pileggi’s vivid, unvarnished, journalistic chronicle of the life of Henry Hill—the working-class Brooklyn kid who knew from age twelve that “to be a wiseguy was to own the world,” who grew up to live the highs and lows of the mafia gangster’s life—has been hailed as “the best book ever written on organized crime” (Cosmopolitan). This is the true-crime bestseller that was the basis for Martin Scorsese’s film masterpiece GoodFellas, which brought to life the violence, the excess, the families, the wives and girlfriends, the drugs, the payoffs, the paybacks, the jail time, and the Feds…with Henry Hill’s crackling narration drawn straight out of Wiseguy and overseeing all the unforgettable action. “Nonstop...absolutely engrossing” (The New York Times Book Review). Read it and experience the secret life inside the mob—from one who’s lived it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the winter of 1977-78, anyone within shouting distance of a two-mile stretch of Boston's Commonwealth Avenue - from Fenway Park to the trolley curve at Packard's Corner - found themselves pulled into the orbit of college hockey. The hottest ticket in a sports-mad city was Boston University's Terriers, a team so tough it was said they didn't have fans - they took hostages. Eschewing the usual recruiting pools in Canada, Jack Parker and his coaching staff assembled a squad that included three stars from nearby Charlestown, then known as the "armed robbery capital of America." Jack Parker's Wiseguys is the story of a high-flying, headline-dominating, national championship squad led by three future stars of the Miracle on Ice, the medal-round game the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team won against the heavily favored Soviet Union. Now retired, Parker is a thoughtful statesman for the sport, a revered figure who held the longest tenure of any coach in Boston sports history. But during the 1977-78 season, he was just five years into his reign - and only a decade or so older than his players. Fiery, mercurial, as tough as any of his tough guys, Parker and his team were to face the pressure-cooker expectations of four previous also-ran seasons, further heightened by barroom brawls, off-the-ice shenanigans, and the citywide shutdown caused by one of the biggest blizzards to ever hit the Northeast. This season was to be Parker's watershed, a roller-coaster ride of nail-biting victories and unimaginable tragedy, played out in increasingly strident headlines as his team opened the season with an unprecedented twenty-one straight wins. Only the second loss of the year eliminated the Terriers from their league playoffs and possibly from national contention; hours after the game Parker's wife died from cancer. The story of how the team responded - coming back to win the national championship a week after Parker buried his wife - makes a compelling tale for Boston sports fans and everyone else who feels a thrill of pride at America's unlikely win over the Soviet national team - a victory forged on Commonwealth Avenue in that bitter, beautiful winter of '78.

I became Joe Schmoe,' says Henry Hill, author of GANGSTERS AND GOODFELLAS and subject of WISEGUY, which was the inspiration for the blockbuster film GOODFELLAS.After a quarter of a century of silence, Hill can finally tell us the rest of the story, Gangsters and Goodfellas picks up where Wiseguy left off, taking readers on the crazy ride of Henry's life - hiding out in the Witness Protection Programme, doing prison time for drug charges, testifying in high-profile, heavily guarded mafia trials, leaving his wife and children and eventually ending up in the entertainment business. Including an exclusive selection of photographs from Henry's personal collection, Gangsters and Goodfellas also reveals Henry's lifelong struggle with addiction, his 'business' relationships that have ranged from mob bosses to movie producers and how, through everything, he survived: ' Its been a hell of a journey, and if I hadn't lived it myself, I would never believe it. I survived the mob. I survived the government, now I'm trying to survive Hollywood.

Book excerpt: "An eye-popping and hilarious joyride through the underworld of sports betting. Beth Raymer arrived in Las Vegas in 2001, hoping to land a job as a cocktail waitress at one of the big casinos. In the meantime, she lived in a $17-a-night motel with her dog, Otis, and waited tables at a low-rent Thai restaurant. One day, one of her regular customers told her about a job she thought Beth would be perfect for and sent her to see Dink, of Dink Inc. Dink was a professional sports gambler--one of the biggest in Vegas. He was looking for a right-hand man--someone who would show up on time, who had a head for numbers, and who didn't steal. She got the job. Lay the Favorite is the story of Beth Raymer's years in the high-stakes, high-anxiety world of sports betting--a period that saw the fall of the local bookie and the rise of the freewheeling, unregulated offshore sports book, and with it the elevation of sports betting in popular culture. As the business explodes, Beth rises--from assistant to expert, trusted and seasoned enough to open an offshore booking office in the Caribbean with a few associates, men who leave their families up north to make a quick killing, while donning new tropical personas fueled by abundant drugs and local girlfriends, and who one by one succumb to their vices. They lie, cheat, steal, and run, until Beth is the last man standing" -- from publisher's web site.

His only response was, Bucky, a country needs to have culture before it can have mythology. Well, the hard reality is that Canada really does have monster legends. Whether or not we have culture yet is still up in the air. However, I will swear to my dying day that the Ogopogo exists, because I saw it with my own eyes. With their two pals, Jeff and Jam, and their two horses, Chum and Trusty, they are forever finding pranks to play on their mother's ranch. They tease the good-natured cowboys and plan excursions to a secret place in the canyons that only they know of. They are not only capable of fun, however. As they grow into young manhood they can and do work as hard as the hired hands. They hunt and they fish, but most of all, they ride. They tackle almost every creature imaginable on their vast California ranch. Their way of life is their passion. When it comes to true American honesty, blood and guts, and the right to defend and protect what is theirs, no one beats the Lyreil boys. They may be young teenagers and full of spirit, but they have a code of honor they follow that neither threats nor bullets can pierce. Between humorous exploits of good clean fun, the young cowboys know what it means to work hard and face in the duties of every day life the real possibility of sudden and violent death. Whether it's branding the cattle or facing down rank ranch bulls, ridding the earth of venomous reptiles or tracking down rustlers, the Lyreil boys get the job done. No matter what the cost.
