Thirty-stx years ago, during that Bloody Week in May, 1871, hen with the fury of despair, the Commune of Paris battled vainly against the army of Versailles, the chief metropolitan lace of the rulers of France was destroyed by fire. Architecturally inferior to the Louvre, though some of its apartments were masterpieces of decoration, it was a massive but not particularly imposing pile. It laid no claim to antiquity. About 1342 a couple of pleasure-houses re built on the spot, and a hundred and sixty years later these properties were acquired by Louise of Savoy, mother of "F ancis I-> who during her regency in 1525 gave them "for 1"f ** to Jean Tiercelin, master of the Dauphin's household. T"hev subsequently reverted to the crown, and in 1564 Catherine A ' Medici ordered the demolition of the old houses, to make m for a. new royal palace by which she intended to replace +h. The original design for the palace of the Tuileries was prepared by the famous Philibert Delorme, and the building was entrusted to him and another notable man, Bullant, conjointly. But all at once Catherine stopped the work, and devoted herself to erecting near...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Book Award–winning historian’s “vivid and moving” eyewitness account of the fall of France to Hitler’s Third Reich at the outset of WWII (The New York Times). As an international war correspondent and radio commentator during World War II, William L. Shirer didn’t just research the fall of France. He was there. In just six weeks, he watched the Third Reich topple one of the world’s oldest military powers—and institute a rule of terror and paranoia. Based on in-person conversations with the leaders, diplomats, generals, and ordinary citizens who both shaped the events and lived through them, Shirer constructs a compelling account of historical events without losing sight of the human experience. From the heroic efforts of the Freedom Fighters to the tactical military misjudgments that caused the fall and the daily realities of life for French citizens under Nazi rule, this fascinating and exhaustively documented account brings this significant episode of history to life. “This is a companion effort to Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, also voluminous but very readable, reflecting once again both Shirer’s own experience and an enormous mass of historical material well digested and assimilated.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Book excerpt: In Status, Power, and Identity in Early Modern France, Jonathan Dewald explores European aristocratic society by looking closely at one of its most prominent families. The Rohan were rich, powerful, and respected, but Dewald shows that there were also weaknesses in their apparently secure position near the top of French society. Family finances were unstable, and competing interests among family members generated conflicts and scandals; political ambitions led to other troubles, partly because aristocrats like the Rohan intensely valued individual achievement, even if it came at the expense of the family’s needs. Dewald argues that aristocratic power in the Old Regime reflected ongoing processes of negotiation and refashioning, in which both men and women played important roles. So did figures from outside the family—government officials, middle-class intellectuals and businesspeople, and many others. Dewald describes how the Old Regime’s ruling class maintained its power and the obstacles it encountered in doing so.
