Book excerpt: Named for the Delaware Indians who lived in the area from about 1794 to 1820, this Indiana county was organized in 1827. It soon developed an economy based around agriculture, which remains important today. The area's first railroad, from Indianapolis to Bellefontaine, Ohio, came to Muncie in 1852. Indiana's first commercial gas well was drilled in Eaton, and many more wells were drilled in the area, which brought glass, metal, and other industries to the county, especially in towns such as Albany, Eaton, and Muncie. After the gas supply failed, automobile components--from gears to batteries--became a thriving industry. During World War II, Delaware County produced goods for the war effort ranging from land mines to submarine interiors. Ball canning jars were the area's most famous product until Jim Davis's Garfield (the cat) came along. In the 1950s and 1960s, Delaware County experienced growth and prosperity with the addition of machine and tool shops and small businesses.

Book excerpt: When Jay Gould died in 1892 he left behind an estate worth the equivalent of seventy-eight billion in today's dollars. He also left behind a reputation as one of Wall Street's most shrewd, astute, and (some said) manipulative operators. Long before his adventures in finance, the future "robber baron" was a young man on the make in his native Catskills, working as a surveyor and mapmaker in his natal place of Delaware County, where he had grown up side by side with the future writer and naturalist John Burroughs. Originally published in 1856, when Gould was just twenty, Gould's History of Delaware County and Border Wars of New York is based on primary sources and original testimony from second and third generation settlers, many of them Gould's own friends and cousins. The book continues to be an important source on the first settlement of the region and is highly regarded by scholars. This edition features a new introduction by Edward Renehan, the biographer of both Gould and John Burroughs.

Book excerpt: Growing up in a fancy house, wearing nice clothes, and having good looks wasn't enough for Reginald. Being the youngest of three, he felt he was obligated to follow his brothers' footsteps on becoming a criminal. When he lands a job at a local department store his life takes a mean turn when he's imprisoned for credit card fraud. "Mama never said they'll be days like this".After being admitted to intake Reginald found it hard to undress before the guards as well as to interact with the other inmates seemed unbearable. He always dreamt of a night in shining armor coming to rescue him from the nightmare he was having. Talk about homesick, he missed his home and his family as well as his outside life to where not even words could describe.Depression got the best of him, from exploring different religions to violence, taking drugs, and having sex all behind bars wasn't as exciting as it may seem. The only sanity he had was getting visits from his family and to win the heart of his jailhouse crush Teddy Cunningham. Teddy had it all, the looks, the money, the respect, and a big love muscle that Reginald would just die for. And for Reginald to win his heart was not an easy task.Overall, he had to stay focused to keep his mind on his court case and not to be taken advantage of in the showers. Nevertheless he continues to pray and asks god to have mercy on his soul.

Book excerpt: Abuses of power by the Sheriff of Delaware County, Oklahoma are nothing new. One news article, centered around a mass rape in the Delaware County jail, described it as "The Rape of Delaware County".In 2014, disabled veteran Ed "Hoss" Turlington shot Darrell Philpott, a convicted drug dealer in self-defense. At the time, the drug dealer had three felony convictions in neighboring Arkansas and multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest. However, the Delaware County Sheriff ordered Turlington arrested. Later, Turlington learned the drug dealer had what locals refer to as "snitch immunity", and the police protection that came with it. In 2017, the drug dealer earned his fourth Arkansas felony conviction (meth-related). Once out of jail, Turlington used his law enforcement training and experience to investigate the investigation. He retained former local Assistant DA Winston Connor. Connor was unable or unwilling to get Turlington's charges dropped. Connor failed to enter into the record the exculpatory evidence that was withheld from the Court by the Sherriff. He also failed to address the Prosecution's star witness' perjuries. In January of 2019, authorities charged Connor with ten felonies, including soliciting murder to a Delaware County cop killer and drug ring leader. Turlington waived his right to an attorney and presented the withheld and altered evidence to the prosecutor. Turlington also showed the prosecutor Philpott's perjuries and felony convictions. The prosecutor refused to acknowledge any of it. On 12 May 2019, Turlington warned on social media that he would post "true and accurate, documented and very embarrassing videos" of the prosecution team if his case wasn't "dropped soon". Less than two months later, and over five years after Turlington's false arrest, and the misery it caused him and his family, the authorities dropped the case. This was a case of corrupt law enforcement and abuses of government power that nearly ruined a man's life until he took matters into his own hands. This is a true story.

Book excerpt: It's strange how different choices you make - even the simple ones - can take you on a path that eventually becomes your life. Covered in Delco is about a group of high school seniors that have been friends since grade school. These guys are from a suburb that has a personality that sets it apart as it sits somewhere between the city of Philadelphia, the upper crest of the Main Line and the state of Delaware. The incomes vary dramatically with some of the most affluent to the not-so-affluent and everything in between. This area is formally known as Delaware County, PA. It is more commonly referred to as "Delco." This group of friends are still kids, but in the eyes of the law they are fast approaching adulthood. They are beginning to find out that their actions have greater consequences than having to answer to the principal or their parents. They are also learning that their decisions - even the ones they don't realize they've made - cause them to go down roads they're not so sure they're ready to go down until it's too late.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally home to the Unami (Delaware) branch of the Lenni Lenape peoples, historians have dated the founding of Middletown Township to 1686. Residents made their livelihood through agriculture, animal husbandry, and milling. Throughout the 19th century, manufacturing, retail, and professional services increased. Middletown has been home to many prominent citizens, including Jacob and Minshall Painter, whose systematic planting of thousands of varieties of trees and shrubs survives today as the Tyler Arboretum. Samuel D. Riddle was best known for breeding legendary racehorses. His community legacy lives on through the donation of his estate and farm to create Riddle Memorial Hospital. Middletown Township has grown to a thriving community, and today most of the farms and open fields have been replaced with retail and residential developments.
