Book Synopsis Development and Human Rights by : Joel E. Oestreich
Download or read book Development and Human Rights written by Joel E. Oestreich and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, the United Nations adopted a common rights-based approach to development in their efforts to promote an international standard of human rights throughout the world. The approach emphasizes economic, social, and cultural rights, but plays down the role of civil and political rights in development. Intergovernmental and non-governmental agencies operate only at the invitation and sufferance of their hosts, and states retain full sovereignty and control over their territory; and the direct promotion of civil and political rights by foreign organizations has seemed beyond the ability of multilateral development agencies. But as Development and Human Rights shows, UN agencies have begun to take on a remarkable set of development priorities that, while carefully circumscribed and defined, constitute greater involvement in a state's internal affairs than anyone would have considered in the past. In this book, Joel E. Oestreich presents the first full-length study of how international agencies evaluate the rights situation in a single country, and the first study to look at both the good and the bad in a rights-based approach. It looks particularly at the human rights challenges faced in India, considering the work of five UN agencies: UNICEF, the UN Development Programme, the World Bank, the UN Fund for Population Activities, and UN Women. Over the course of the book, Oestreich summarizes how the UN navigates this difficult political terrain, and how effectively these policies are being implemented. Development and Human Rights ultimately considers how rights-based approaches fit in the traditional discourse on human rights, and the ability of these agencies to initiate meaningful change on state behavior in the rights arena.
Book Synopsis Indonesia Economic and Technical Assistance Strategy Handbook Volume 1 Strategic Information and Regulations by : IBP USA
Download or read book Indonesia Economic and Technical Assistance Strategy Handbook Volume 1 Strategic Information and Regulations written by IBP USA and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a parent, you want your children to grow up to become self-motivated, financially savvy, contributing members of society who maintain a deeply satisfying adult life. This is why it is essential to “bratproof” your children against turning into spoiled, egotistical materialists who feel entitled to misbehave and take their lives for granted. This book will help you raise emotionally healthy kids who will grow to become mature, well-rounded adults. Protect your children from the potentially negative influences of a life of privilege and blinding effects of America’s abject consumerism by instilling these seven positive character traits: • High self-esteem • Joy and optimism • Serenity • Hard work and thrift • Loving kindness • Forgiveness • Integrity These will help give your children a sense of purpose while providing direction and clarity to their lives. Instead of seeking guidance through wealth or a misplaced notion of superiority, your children will develop a strong “work ethic” centered on selflessness, sacrifice, and ambition. This book offers simple, practical strategies you can integrate into daily parenting to help you effectively raise your child. A vital precept of this work is how to instill an obligation of financial responsibility in your son or daughter, and protecting your wealth from being decimated because they are unprepared for the financial realities of life. The book’s clear-cut analysis of the fundamentals of wealth transfer, discussion of the use of trusts, and detailed instruction regarding how to build a lasting legacy through charitable donations prepares you to discuss these complex topics with your advisors as well as your inheritors.
Book Synopsis Development Aid in Stable Democracies and Fragile States by : A. H. Monjurul Kabir
Download or read book Development Aid in Stable Democracies and Fragile States written by A. H. Monjurul Kabir and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-21 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on experience and reflections related to international support provided to parliaments and legislative bodies both in selected countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ghana, Serbia, and Kyrgyzstan) and globally. The author intends to provide a critique of parliamentary support, as part of development assistance or foreign aid, for having been conceived in narrow terms of technical assistance and for failing to appreciate that aid effectiveness calls for a sound understanding of a country’s politics, culture, and history. The monograph examines the effectiveness of aid in both stable democracies, and fragile and transition countries. The project is ideal for audiences interested in regional politics, the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, Central Asia, and development/democracy studies.
