Book excerpt: Heartbreaking, life-affirming, brave and bold - Karen Gregory's debut is a completely different kind of love story. 'Is there anything that's concerning you?' Felicity says. 'College, home, boyfriends?' Though she's more or less smiling at this last one. I don't smile. Instead, I feel my face go hot. Silence stretches as wide as an ocean. When I look up, Felicity has this expression on her face like she's just seen Elvis. Slowly, she leans forward and in a gentle voice I've never heard her use before she says, 'Have you done a pregnancy test?' When Hedda discovers she is pregnant, she doesn't believe she could ever look after a baby. The numbers just don't add up. She is young, and still in the grip of an eating disorder that controls every aspect of how she goes about her daily life. She's even given her eating disorder a name – Nia. But as the days tick by, Hedda comes to a decision: she and Nia will call a truce, just until the baby is born. 17 weeks, 119 days, 357 meals. She can do it, if she takes it one day at a time ... Heartbreaking and hopeful by turns, Karen Gregory's debut novel is a story of love, heartache and human resilience. And how the things that matter most can't be counted. Fans of Lisa Williamson, Sara Barnard and Sarah Crossan will fall in love with Karen's writing.

Book excerpt: "[T]hese countless connecting threads, woven into one indissoluble texture, form that ever-enlarging web which is the blended product of the world's scientific and industrial activity." -- William Barton Rogers, 1860, "Objects and Plan of an Institute of Technology "Inspired by an exhibition of 150 objects created by the MIT Museum to mark MIT's sesquicentennial, this lavishly illustrated volume is a unique collection of visual and written meditations about the making and meaning of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The story of MIT is more than a simple tale of a founder's vision. It is greater than the sum of all the stories that have been or are yet to be told by the hundreds of thousands who have a direct personal connection with the Institute. Yet, with the assistance of the collective intelligence of the MIT community, the Museum was able to capture some of those "countless connecting threads" -- from a towering module for the first real-time digital computer to the famous Baker House Piano Drop. Part history, part catalog, part souvenir, "Countless Connecting Threads" invites readers to (re)discover, through some of the Institute's most evocative objects, the essence of the vast and varied tapestry that is MIT.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do women in Niger experience pregnancy and childbirth differently from women in the United States or Europe? Barbara M. Cooper sets out to understand childbirth in a country with the world’s highest fertility rate and an alarmingly high rate of maternal and infant mortality. Cooper shows how the environment, slavery and abolition, French military rule, and the rapid expansion of Islam have all influenced childbirth and fertility in Niger from the 19th century to the present day. She sketches a landscape where fear of infertility generates intense competition between communities, ethnicities, and co-wives and creates a culture where concerns about infertility dominate concerns about overpopulation, where illegitimate children are rejected, and where the education of girls is sacrificed in the name of avoiding shame. Given a medical system poorly adapted to women's needs, a precarious economy, and a political context where it is impossible to address sexuality openly, Cooper discovers that it is little wonder that pregnancy and birth are a woman's greatest pride as well as a source of grave danger.

Book excerpt: You can discover many simple joys in life to be thankful for, no matter how you feel or how many tears fall from your eyes today. How can it be, I asked myself, that at thirty-eight years of age Im watching all of my dreams crash into a giant brick wall? How will those I love the most deal with this news? What about our plans for continuing to do the work of the Lord? How will we finish the business plan that we have in full motion? Maybe the other ovary is okay, and I will still be able to have my first child before this gets really crazy. All of these life-impacting questions assaulted my mind. I felt a strong arm around my waist and heard my doctors voice say, Devaney, are you okay; can you hear me? The entire experience was like watching a horror movie programmed on fast forward. But at some point, a massive wave of calmness sweetly enveloped me like a thick fog, and it calmed the raging sea. Time came to a screeching halt and the issues of life, love, and relationships were narrowed to those that held eternal value. Many years after that fateful day of my cancer diagnosis in 2002, I can now say with assurance that I am an ordinary girl, but with an extraordinary calling and life in Christ. I have experienced how God calls ordinary people (regular girls and guys) to do extraordinary things for Him. Not all extraordinary things are packaged in missionary work abroad or preaching the gospel. Some include a simple faith-filled walk of perseverance and strength through sudden and extended suffering and loss. In the callings of God, some of the greatest impacts for His kingdom are the people who are called into action and those who are affected because of the one who is simply persevering and enduring. Heaven surely holds the treasures of each of these beautiful overcoming life works. I am thankful and blessed to have been called to walk in a small portion of His field. And so are you whether you see it clearly today, or not. Be inspired to relentlessly pursue joy Beyond the Place of Your Tears.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether people like it or not, the traditional church is in serious difficulty and has been fighting for survival for years. There is a tiny uptick in the number of new, non-traditional churches, which helps us all see that God has a new method of doing church. There are no quick fixes in this book, but there are true roots that are being uncovered. There is no need for another religious group or activity in the Church. We need compassionate, Christ-centered leaders, not religious leaders. Bill is a God-sent prophet with a powerful message that the entire Church needs to hear. Bill demonstrates that many churches, large and small, are meeting and remaining silent as the world continues to deteriorate in many ways. The truth is that the world, including some churches, is on its way to Hell. We must heed the urgency of all God has placed on Bill Vincent's heart and the hearts of many prophetic voices like him. Why is America in such horrible shape when there are so many churches? Someone has dropped the ball. This is why, rather than brushing it off and passing it on to the next person, we can't just attend to Church as spectators. When we're asked to pray for a person or a country, we must take it seriously and truly struggle and intercede. This would be the point at which the ball would be dropped. You understand why horrible things have happened in America: God is attempting to awaken this country to the fact that there is a greater power at work in this country that is not the President of the United States.
