Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a professional development unit on program evaluation on in-service elementary school counselors': (a) knowledge of program evaluation, (b) self-efficacy level towards performing program evaluation, and (c) ability to develop and conduct program evaluation in the school setting. This study provided a four-session professional development unit on program evaluation to a group of elementary school counselors in Pinellas County, Florida. There were 29 participants who completed the study. Results indicated after participating in a the professional development unit, based on Social Cognitive Theory, elementary school counselors increased their knowledge of program evaluation, increased their perceived self-efficacy toward program evaluation skills, and applied the learning from the professional development in their school settings. Although further research is necessary, the findings of this study suggest that implementation of a professional development unit, like the one tested in this study might be a useful step toward increasing the program evaluation skills of school counselors. Additionally, these results further validate the applications of Social Cognitive Theory to professional development.

Book excerpt: The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs is a resource to develop effective and high quality comprehensive school counseling programs that align with Texas statutes and rules governing the work of school counselors. It outlines a process for tailoring school counseling programs to meet the varying needs of students across an array of school districts through implementation of the four components of school counseling programs, Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, and System Support. With this resource, a school counselor will learn to use campus-specific data to identify the unique needs of a campus and design a comprehensive school counseling program to meet those needs. Recognizing the important roles of the entire educational community, the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs provides examples of how parents, teachers, administrators, principals and school counselors can best contribute to implementation of each of the four components of comprehensive school counseling programs. It provides a developmental framework for a school counseling program curriculum that includes activities at each grade level to enhance students¿ educational, career, personal and social development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book prepares doctoral learners and new counselor educators to enter into the profession of counselor education and supervision. The work outlines the total experience of teaching in counselor education by providing a practical guide for navigating higher education using best practices grounded in research and based on the lived experiences of seasoned counselor educator contributors. Using case scenarios, points of reflection, as well as the professional and personal accounts of current educators, this book serves as a soup-to-nuts guide outlining current best practices in counselor education. Written from a social justice perspective with efforts to emphasize diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging, more than 70% of the textbook contributors identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC). Additionally, all contributors identify as female with varying sexual identities, physical body sizes, and abilities, thus disrupting the dominant narrative. The chapters range in scope and cover topics such as best practices and strategies for teaching praxis, curriculum development, and strategies to develop CACREP specialization programs based on the 2024 CACREP standards and extant research. The book also provides chapters addressing recommendations for navigating higher education such as finding and landing the job, the first year as a counselor educator, the promotion and tenure process, and concludes with a section on personal and professional development for new and experienced counselor educators. A bonus feature of this book is the inclusion of a technological component offering a companion website with a repository of activities, exercises, and resources.

The manual is organized in five chapters. Following an introduction that defines inservice training, the first chapter discusses inservice problem identification procedures (conduct a needs assessment and determine present performance and existing deficiencies), while the second chapter presents 10 steps for developing an inservice training program (commit the facility to staff training; select training objectives; write performance objectives; select course prerequisites; select and sequence course content; construct competency tests; select an instructional method; determine instructor requirements; select and prepare training aids; and determine equipment requirements). The third and fourth chapters provide information on evaluating the inservice training program and responding to changing inservice needs. The final chapter presents three models of training programs: the Stanton conferencing instructional package for group instruction; the Rottier "turnover notebook" style of instructional packages for individual learning; and the Rehabilitation Associate Training for Employed Staff (RATES) modules for individual or group learning. Appendixes contain needs assessment formats, a DACUM chart format for developing curriculum objectives, a chart of instructional strategies, a resource list, and inservice training forms and curriculum. In the classroom, on the playground, or even in the parking lot, teachers are often called upon to respond quickly and appropriately to students' social and emotional needs, drawing from instinct more than anything else. In this second edition of the bestselling Counseling Skills for Teachers, Jeffrey and Ellen Kottler expertly guide preservice and inservice teachers to be effective helpers in the context of today's most common challenges, highlighting issues related to homelessness, grief and loss, and bullying and harassment. The book also discusses: - Responding to a range of behaviors in formal and informal school settings - Building a culture of tolerance and respect in the classroom - Motivating disengaged students - Communicating effectively with counseling professionals and parents With an entirely new chapter on "Counseling Yourself," the book offers teachers surefire techniques for taking better care of themselves and the students in their schools.
