Yet in the eleventh century, Iran's primacy ended as its agricultural economy entered a steep decline. Richard W. Bulliet advances several provocative explanations, for example that the boom in cotton production paralleled the spread of Islam and that Iran's agricultural decline stemmed from a significant cooling of the climate that lasted more than a century. Substantiating his argument with innovative quantitative research and scientific discoveries, Bulliet first establishes the relationship between Iran's cotton industry and Islam and then outlines the evidence for what he terms the "Big Chill." He then focuses on a lucrative but temperature-sensitive industry of cross-breeding one-humped and two-humped camels, concluding with an unusual concatenation of events that had a profound and long-lasting impact not just on the history of Iran but on the development of the world.

Book excerpt: This article presents an investigation of the process of decline and rebirth of textile manufacturing in two Middle Eastern regions, Egypt and the Izmir region, during the first wave of globalization (1850-1914). Through the application of the 'Dutch disease' model, it explores the linkages between terms of trade and industrialization. These are further related to the evolution of price transmission between domestic and global raw cotton markets. Findings indicate that different levels of market integration have contributed to diverging trajectories in industrial development in the two regions: while in Egypt the process of de-industrialization was not reversed, in the Izmir region weaker international price transmission facilitated the creation of a nascent domestic textile industry. However, terms of trade patterns and relative price movements are only one of the causes that can explain the differences between the two regions.

This paper reports the results of a visit to the cotton-growing districts of Egypt in June and July, 1910. It shows that the admixture of inferior Hindi cotton is a serious burden upon the Egyptian industry and that our more intelligent farmers can secure an important advantage through the improved system of selection that has been developed by experiments in Arizona. A careful comparison of the results of the Arizona experiments with the conditions actually existing in Egypt became necessary in order to determine whether a satisfactory degree of uniformity has been attained in our acclimatized strains of Egyptian cotton. A previous study of the problem of diversity of the Egyptian cotton had been made in Arizona, as reported in Bulletins Nos. 147 and 156 of this series.
