Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable development will not happen without substantial contributions from and leading roles of companies and business organizations. This requires the provision of adequate information on corporate social and ecological impacts and performance. For the last decade, progress has been made in developing and adapting accounting mechanisms to these needs but significant work is still needed to tackle the problems associated with conventional accounting. Until recently, research on environmental management accounting (EMA) has concentrated on developed countries and on cost–benefit analysis of implementing individual EMA tools. Using a comparative case study design, this book seeks to redress the balance and improve the understanding of EMA in management decision-making in emerging countries, focussing specifically on South-East Asian companies. Drawing on 12 case studies, taken from a variety of industries, Environmental Management Accounting: Case Studies of South-East Asian Companies explores the relationship between decision situations and the motivation for, and barriers to, the application of clusters of EMA tools as well as the implementation process itself. This book will be useful to scholars interested in the environmental and sustainability management accounting research field and those considering specific approaches to EMA within emerging economies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managerial cost accounting is the financial and managerial tool that is used to estimate the organizational cost of products and services in business and government. In recent decades, cost accounting in the United States and other advanced industrial countries has been dominated by discussions of Activity Based Costing or ABC. While ABC can be shown to produce a more accurate estimate of cost than older and more basic types of cost accounting, ABC is not used extensively in many governments. We argue that this recent focus on ABC has stifled examination and discussion of how government cost accounting is being used and how it could be used in practice. The study of cost accounting practice reveals an important and underexplored area of financial management in government. Given the scandals that cost accounting estimates can create and that different types of cost accounting can create different estimates of cost it may be reasonable to ask whether the cost accounting exercise is worth it? Cost Accounting in Government: Theory and Applications addresses these unusual and unusually important topics through a series of studies of different government cost accounting practices. The first section of the book presents two chapters on the history and basic elements of cost accounting. The second section of the book provides further discussion and case studies of actual cost accounting practices in the main areas that cost accounting has been used in government: benchmarking the performance of government services, rate setting, grant overhead cost recovery, and cost management. The last two chapters discuss cost accounting practices in Europe and the future of cost accounting. These cases span local and federal governments and provide a much needed context to the study of cost accounting in government. Aimed at academics, researchers and policy makers in the fields of Accounting, Public Administration, and Government Studies, Cost Accounting in Government: Theory and Applications seeks to address the practical and theoretical gap in government cost accounting research with case studies of different public agencies that are using cost accounting for different purposes. The case studies illustrate that different purposes for cost accounting create unique and interesting cost accounting practices. The case studies provide useful examples of actual cost accounting systems that can inform both research and instruction

Book excerpt: Written to create a collection of teaching cases that are interesting, thought-provoking and relevant to contemporary business situations and decisions, this book advocates broadening and strengthening the management dimensions of management accounting and control courses--doing so without sacrificing essential accounting content. Challenging yet concise cases are presented in a manner that minimizes reader preparation requirements. Topics and materials demonstrate how costs, cost analysis, and planning and performance measurement can be useful to managers in making operating and strategic decisions. This edition includes cases intended to build a foundation of basic concepts like cost behaviors, standard costing, and relevant costs. It also includes cases intended to address more comprehensive and complex issues such as activity-based thinking, balanced scorecards, transfer pricing, the use of ROI versus Residual Income to measure performance, flexible budgeting, and revenue and expense variance analysis. For anyone in management accounting, cost accounting, strategic cost management, and/or management control systems professions.

Book excerpt: Using the performance of Toyota during and after the economic crisis versus that of the Big Three US auto manufacturers, this case study presents the operational aspects and accounting tools underlying how a company adopts a cost accounting method. Toyota operates from a lean production system that is compared with and contrasted against the traditional production systems of US auto manufacturers. The case provides an overview of approaches to cost accounting: traditional, activity-based costing and lean, while introducing lean accounting tools to demonstrate their impact on performance analysis and decision making. By examining the analysis tools in traditional systems, such as the gross profit percentage and variance analysis, the case raises concerns about how such tools could be misleading. Lean accounting tools unveil significant hidden costs, which have a strong impact on performance analysis and decision-making.

This text aims to consider how the financial controller/management accountant decides to design a cost management system given the range of approaches to cost managment advocated in recent years. The book reports on research which tested the relationship between cost management systems adopted and the strategic orientation of the company, through five detailed case studies of well-known and named companies. The case studies trace the developments in each company through time.
