Book excerpt: A fresh look at the perennial reality of the gods and how they help humanity-through the planet's sacred sites The "gods" live! Though seemingly relegated to the archives of myth, the "gods" of antiquity are still with us in the form of the Great White Brotherhood. In fact, what the ancients described as their pantheon are members of this is an august assembly of spiritually advanced beings, based on the constellation of the Great Bear. The Gods in Their Cities, based on original clairvoyant research, reveals that the Great White Brotherhood has numerous meeting places for humans throughout the planet's array of holy sites. Seven different Great White Brotherhood types of geomantic locales are documented, and all of them exist in multiple copies on Earth. The Gods in Their Cities shows how myths of many cultures, from the Irish to Sumerians, are actually psychic maps to the planet's secret visionary terrain, to the geomantic locales of the Brotherhood, and how to successfully interact with them. And it probes behind the mythic guises of the Ray Masters, 14 select great Adepts involved with many aspects of Earth life and geomancy since the beginning-including the true identity of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary, and Merlin. Merely our knowing that this esoteric Brotherhood and their interactive locales across the Earth exist can inspire confidence, even certainty, that reality, and thus our planet, culture, and individual human lives, have meaning and are purposeful.

Book excerpt: An Israeli scientist invents a machine which is able to exchange the bodies of people. No one in Israel can see any use for it but the Minister of Science in Britain cannot wait to get his hands on it. Ultimately it is sold and brought to England to a laboratory at Lytham St. Annes. The great advantage of the invention is that while the bodies are exchanged, the heads and brain remain the same. Lancaster jail is a tough place to be incarcerated. It contains five hundred prisoners all serving life sentences and is under strict control. Then the Government decides that, with the new invention, they intend to exchange prisoners at the jail with very old eminent people who contributed greatly to society, thereby extending their lives by thirty, forty or fifty years. It mean that a thirty-five year old prisoner would exchange his body with an eighty-eight year old man. The reasoning was that the inmates in the prison were simply rotting away uselessly. Although their lives would be very much shortened after the exchange the recipients of their bodies would be able to live many years longer and continue to benefit the community. The equipment is set up at Lytham St. Annes and prisoners are sent there regularly to undergo the body exchange. At the same time, well-known celebrities and people of rank were invited to gain a new lease of life. However problems soon arise. Firstly, the number of prisoners serving life sentences become used up and the Government has to seek donors from mental institutions. Secondly, because of its horrendous nature, the Government insists that it remains totally secret. However a television news reporter by the name of Sky Summers investigates and will not let go. People are assassinated by the Government for interfering in the process and Lancaster jail becomes empty and is scheduled to close. Bill Preston, its Governor, is in despair. The controller of the project, Alan Jordan, eventually realises the inhumane nature of the project and he decides to revolt against it. There are many twists and turns in this tale, but it instils horror in the reader for there is worse to come!

Book excerpt: Mina, a Lufthansa flight attendant, and Adam, a trainee police detective, establish a loving relationship formed around an astounding story (purported to be true) that boggled police investigators and medical examiners in LA. The story investigates the legal ramifications associated with a bizarre death that was chosen as the most unusual case on record for presentation at the 25th Anniversary dinner of the American Association of Forensic Scientists. It may be difficult to envisage a growing romance within the confines of a murder mystery; however, the unusually volatile pressures and emotions that surround this case are, in fact, the perfect vehicle to exhibit the unique personalities of the involved characters. This story is sometimes bizarre and sometimes amusing and it becomes quite difficult to keep in mind that a large part of it is claimed to have really happened.

Book excerpt: DON WISE is a clever scientist but he is obese, ugly, and has big ears. In addition, he stutters, is tongue-tied with women, and isvery awkward in his body language. He has a crush on an old school friend whom he hasn't seen in years and a mishap in the computer of an marriage agency brings them together. However, they only write to each other for almost a year and he realises that he has to meet her to continue the relationship…but he is terrified of doing so because he knows he will be awkward and tongue-tied. He works in the brainstorming unit at Universal Energy inc. His colleague, ROBERT HARRIS, suddenly comes up with an idea called hydrogentics whereby a molecule of hydrogen can be moved to mass production, creating a heating process that will reduce the cost of all the energy in the world by seventy-five per cent, However it needs to be tested to check its veracity and capability. The project soon comes to the attention of Mr. G., a one-armed entrepreneur, who sends his subordinate, Jake, to obtain the formula and the accompanying notes. HARRIS proves to be extremely principled and refuses to hand them over even though he is offered a small fortune in return. Subsequently after a number of refusals, he is murdered. JAKE'S next step is to go to DON WISE topersuade him to hand over the details. DON refuses money and he will only do so if he can become good-looking, slim and attractive to women. It appears to be a mission impossible but JAKE arranges for him to visit a cosmetic surgeon, DR. SINCLAIR, who has been struck off by the medical council, MAI WAN, a Chinese psychotherapist, and HYWELL GRIFFITHS, a retired Welsh teacher. They take him in hand in a series of daily sessions over five months to undertake a total cosmetic, weight-losing, mind-blowing transformation. DAVID COLEMAN is the Controller of the brainstorming unit at Universal Energy. He steals the formula and the notes and wipes the computer clean of the files before leaving without notice. He arranges a pyramid scheme offering options to investors who wish to subscribe. When this comes to the attention of the one-armed entrepreneur, Jake is sent to get him to close the operation. He Coleman refuses to do so at first but, after being seriously menaced, heis forced to comply. This brings a mob of angry investors to his father’s house where he is staying and he is subsequently arrested by the police for theft and fraud. ANYA SMIRNOFF, a young female scientist from Samarkand in Uzbekistan, joins the brainstorming unit in place of HARRIS, but she has to wear a mask because of a serious car accident. DON WISE falls in love with her, himself wearing bandages as a result of cosmetic surgery, while she wears a mask. The hydrogentics programme fails and Mr. G. moves on to find a jeweller willing to copy the famous Faberge Eggs for which he intends to make a fortune. However the security code that everyone uses when they contact each other is ‘The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog.’ So how come the same code is used by the new Controller who takes the place of DAVID COLEMAN?

Book excerpt: Calligans Wake, which is set in Manhattan in the Seventies, begins by introducing the reader to Byron Culligan and two of his friends, Kevin Cassidy and Bull Finch. We see Culligans creativity at work, unfortunately commingled with his lack of responsibility and excess of carnal appetite. After some misadventures which shed some light on the Culligan character, we meet Janet Culligan, his wife, and learn more about her fathers interest in Byron and Janet. We start to see how Culligans zest for independence (which may have suggested he not marry in the first place) will misinterpret his father-in-laws gestures, lead to rebellion expressed in a number of ways (almost always involving drinking and sex), and finally to really irresponsible behavior that destroys his marriage. Culligan, as we see him, is not a likable man, but one who manages to create and carry off humorous situations and provide laughs. There is, however, a nuance of true humanity and decency in this self-centered rogue. As the book evolves, we meet Riley, a huge bear of a man who owns a lavish place called The Beatiary in Greenwich Village, a refuge for Culligan from the Upper East Side where he and Janet live. Riley seems to have some source of wealth and is generous in spending it and in providing support in other ways. In short, Riley is the quintessential friend we would all love to have, We also meet Tiffany...a lovely and understanding woman. Culligan starts to find himself attracted to herm and she to him. This is a different relationship and may offer some hope. The tempo picks up as the clock marches towards St. Patricks Day and the inevitable celebrations in New York. The latter part of the book sees Finch driven from New York and let into a tragic circumstance in Washington, DC--which alerts and alarms Culligan who fears his father-in-law wants him committed so that the Culligan-Janet marriage can be annulled. Other characters, such as Rightous Richard, a semi-sane man with a messiah complex and a seeming mission, and Teddy The Torch Tomlinson, leader of the rock group The Pyromaniacs whose stage antics inevitably involve conflagrations, play larger roles in defining the world that Culligan must deal with if he is to remain free. Calligans Wake builds to a crescendo with the St. Patricks Day celebration, and then tries to seek solutions as Easter appears on the calendar. Culligan, after a series of misadventures that are laugh producing, begins to realize that freedom may mean more than being licentious and irresponsible: perhaps the price of freedom is making choices and accepting the responsibility for them? The off and laughable happenings at The Plaza, where a clerical luncheon is taken over by Righteous Richard and LSD, leads to intimations of mortality, and Culligans eyes are opened. The book ends with Culligan, one Easter morn, walking along a New York street, into.......? Calligans Wake is a serious story told with a comedic approach. There is a stream of consciousness that runs through it which seems to be the best way to let the reader get to know Culligan. Readers have said that Culligan comes to life, but whether or not he is someone you might want t know and to socialize with is another matter!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evil, an undeniable yet inexplicable force in human existence, is often defined as that which ought not to be, yet is - so it must be destroyed, or contained, or lived with. Myths of evil function to universalize the human condition, to show the tension between the ideal and the real, to reveal but not allegorize that condition, and to go some way to assist humanity in understanding, combating, and coping with evil within its societies. Tales of Darkness explores the causes of evil in myth, encompassing themes such as defilement, the figure of the trickster, evil people both within and outside the society, and traumatic initiations. Robert Ellwood then looks at "cures" for evil: laughter, sacrifice, the flood, the hero's quest, initiation, the savior, divine wisdom and the end of days. This is a fascinating examination of how people have dealt with evil, not philosophically but in terms of the myths, ancient and modern, which present stories convergent with our own, from creation myths to Star Wars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sorrow Built a Bridge: Friendship and AIDS chronicles Daniel Berrigan's work with people with AIDS during the 1980s at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City. For decades Berrigan protested war and nuclear weapons. Then in the early 1980s he also began to minister to those dying of cancer. When AIDS exploded in New York, he offered to accompany the dying at St. Vincent's, one of the first and best care facilities in the nation for people with AIDS. This account tells of the suffering of those with AIDS, an epidemic which now afflicts millions around the globe. It also shows a compassionate Christian response to such suffering. In the process, Berrigan once again teaches us how to make peace. I list myself among the many admirers of Father Daniel Berrigan. His writings are always poetic and inspirational, his message ever timely and beneficial. Sorrow Built a Bridge is no exception. Father Dan has put a human face on AIDS, the malady which has reached epidemic proportions. He recounts here his own personal journey and ministry with fourteen specific persons for whom 'death was given a royal welcome.' He does not dwell on the causes of AIDS nor does he pass judgment on its victims doomed to 'atrocious suffering.' Father Dan gives meaning to his own experience by choosing and reflecting on selected scripture passages. He also connects his encounters with the deaths of those who were once 'young and vigorous' with his own peacemaking. In both cases, 'dreams turn into nightmares,' 'old hatreds don new fatigues' and 'immunity systems break down both in a person and in a nation.' This book is a special gift to those committed to compassionate care for persons with AIDS. Bishop Walter F. Sullivan (from the Foreword)
