Book Synopsis Corrosion Behavior of Metal Matrix Composites by : R. C. Paciej
Download or read book Corrosion Behavior of Metal Matrix Composites written by R. C. Paciej and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal-matrix composites suffer from preferential corrosion because of their non-homogeneous composition and structure. In particular, aluminum alloy matrix materials are very susceptible to corrosion, when the dispersoid is a noble phase, such as SiC. This paper describes the pros and cons of what inadequate processing and fabrication can do to corrosion behavior of the composites. Keywords: Metal matrix composites; Aluminum silicon carbide; Extrusion; Preferential corrosion; Solution heat treatment; Polarization; Metallurgy.
Book Synopsis Metal Matrix Composites by : Antonio Contreras Cuevas
Download or read book Metal Matrix Composites written by Antonio Contreras Cuevas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-27 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers several aspects of the synthesis of composites by the pressureless infiltration technique. It describes the methods used to obtain green preforms, such as cold pressed and hot sintering, describing the heating time, load, and time required for pressing the preforms. Additionally, wettability phenomena, which is directly related on infiltration, is extensively described. Wettability process and interfacial reactions are analyzed in many ceramic-metal systems prior to fabricate the composites. A complete description of fabrication processes for Metal Matrix Composites is included. An extensive section on structural, chemical, and mechanical characterization of composites fabricated with aluminum and magnesium alloys as matrices reinforced with titanium carbide (TiC), aluminum nitride (AlN), silicon carbide (SiC) and alumina (Al2O3) is included. Relevant techniques for joining composites, such as welding and brazing are addressed. As well as issues pertaining to the corrosion and wear of composites are discussed as well. Corrosion behavior of some composites exposed to aqueous media was analyzed. Corrosion of composites using TiC and SiC like reinforcement and Al, Ni, and some Al-Cux, Al-Mgx and Al-Cu-Li alloys like matrix is discussed extensively. The structural characterization techniques addressed include: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical microscopy (OM), differential thermal analysis (DTA), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Mechanical testing including hardness, elastic modulus, tension tests, and impact tests were used in the characterization of composites. Theoretical models for prediction of some mechanical properties are included too.
Book Synopsis Mechanical Performance and Structure-Property Relations in 6061B Aluminum Metal Matrix Composites by : Conrad Park
Download or read book Mechanical Performance and Structure-Property Relations in 6061B Aluminum Metal Matrix Composites written by Conrad Park and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of processing (e.g., HIP, CIP+Upset, Extrusion) and reinforcement size/ volume fraction on the mechanical behavior of 6061B Aluminum/SiCp composites were determined at room temperature. Materials sold under the brand names SupremEX 620XF (6061B/SiCp/20%/0.7μm) and 640XA (6061B/SiCp/40%/3μm) were provided by collaborators at Materion Brush Incorporated. Mechanical performance was evaluated by uniaxial tension testing and compared to 6061 T6. Stiffness was not dependent upon processing conditions, and increased from 67 GPa to 94 GPa (40%) and 135 GPa (101%) for SupremEX 620XF and 640XA. Strength and ductility were found to be greatly dependent upon processing conditions. Yield strength increased from 276 MPa to 338-413 MPa (+22-50%) and 420-506 MPa (+52-83%). Ultimate tensile strength increased from 310 MPa to 399-481 MPa (+28-55%) and 450-531 MPa (+45-71%), while strain at failure was reduced from 17% to 3.1-8.5% (-50-82%) and 0.2-4.2% (-75-99%). XRD, metallography, and SEM fracture surface analysis supplemented these findings.
