G. Wright, the corps commander, called together the division and brigade commanders, and at this meeting it was proposed and decided to erect at West Point, N. Y., a bronze statue of Major-General John Sedgwick, who had recently been killed while in command of the corps. The bold movement would trigger extensive cavalry fighting and a major battle at Winchester before culminating in the bloody three-day battle at Gettysburg.
