Die Erwartungen und Ansprüche der Gesellschaft an Unternehmen sind gestiegen: Unternehmen sollen sich auf eine verantwortungsvolle Art und Weise verhalten, sie sollen neben ihrer ökonomischen auch ihrer sozialen und ökologischen Verantwortung nachkommen. Um die gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz zu stärken und Vertrauen aufzubauen, müssen sich Unternehmen für gesellschaftliche Themen öffnen und über die traditionellen Stakeholder hinaus weitere Interessengruppen wie die lokale Gemeinschaft oder Nichtregierungsorganisationen in ihre Entscheidungsfindung einbeziehen. Viele Unternehmen haben diese Entwicklungen bereits erkannt und die Wahrnehmung gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung (Corporate Social Responsibility = CSR) ist für sie kein neues Thema. Allerdings darf es den Unternehmen bei ihrem verantwortlichen Handeln nicht lediglich um Green- oder Bluewashing gehen, das heißt oberflächliche CSR-Aktivitäten für reine PR-Zwecke sind der falsche Weg. Zum Erhalt ihrer Reputation und Glaubwürdigkeit sollten Unternehmen die Werte, die sie mit ihren Maßnahmen nach außen kommunizieren, auch tatsächlich leben.
