Book excerpt: Offshore outsourcing of business activities from the Global North to the Global South does not only relocate investments and jobs, but has also brought about new business demands on suppliers activities and their social and environmental impact. The article explores whether, how and why offshore outsourcing transactions between foreign firms and Malaysian firms affect the upgrading of the CSR activities of Malaysia incorporated firms, taking the particular institutional context of Malaysia into consideration. The focus is on recipient country vendors, contract manufacturers or subcontractors and their reception of and strategising about corporate social responsibility. The findings of the study indicate, firstly, that the amount of foreign (sub)contracting influences the CSR strategising of domestic firms while the global value chain position is only conditioning the offshore outsourcing portfolio. Secondly, both the corporate governance of Malaysian affiliate and the Malaysian government play an important role shaping the perception, rhetoric and organisation of CSR activities by firms in Malaysia with a domestic value chain position. Hence, firms in Malaysia are squeezed by international business linkages and the local institutional context.

Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is about managing an organization s impact on society and the environment through its operations, products or services and through its interaction with key stakeholders such as employees, customers, investors and suppliers. This book addresses how outsourcing can be used as a powerful tool for advancing critical social, economic, and environmental issues on a global basis. Additionally, it examines corporate responsibility policies and practices for outsourcing, including identifying and showcasing policies that our membership have adopted, creating a framework for companies to model new CR policies, and provides multiple resources for readers. Active for several years within the IAOP is the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Subcommittee of the IAOP Advocacy and Outreach Committee. As an outgrowth of the work of the CSR Subcommittee, the need for an Outsourcing Professional s Guide to CSR was identified. From both the 2009 and the more recent 2011 IAOP survey on corporate social responsibility in outsourcing, it was shown that an overwhelming (and consistent) 84-85% of organizations would follow IAOP guiding principles for socially responsible outsourcing. This stable percentage of organizations looking for guidance bodes well for the development of the IAOP s Outsourcing Professionals Guide to Corporate Social Responsibility.IAOP® is the global, standard-setting organization and advocate for the outsourcing profession. With a global community of more than 110,000 members and affiliates worldwide, IAOP is the leading professional association for organizations and individuals involved in transforming the world of business through outsourcing, offshoring and shared services. Our client-side members are, on average, responsible for $60 million per year of outsourcing spending with some overseeing outsourcing programs in the billions of dollars.85% of IAOP members credit IAOP for improved outsourcing outcomes at their organizations and 93% of IAOP s Certified Outsourcing Professionals® (COPs) say that the designation has had a positive impact on their careers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global race for talent is on, with countries and businesses competing for the best and brightest. Talented individuals migrate much more frequently than the general population, and the United States has received exceptional inflows of human capital. This foreign talent has transformed U.S. science and engineering, reshaped the economy, and influenced society at large. But America is bogged down in thorny debates on immigration policy, and the world around the United States is rapidly catching up, especially China and India. The future is quite uncertain, and the global talent puzzle deserves close examination. To do this, William R. Kerr uniquely combines insights and lessons from business practice, government policy, and individual decision making. Examining popular ideas that have taken hold and synthesizing rigorous research across fields such as entrepreneurship and innovation, regional advantage, and economic policy, Kerr gives voice to data and ideas that should drive the next wave of policy and business practice. The Gift of Global Talent deftly transports readers from joyous celebrations at the Nobel Prize ceremony to angry airport protests against the Trump administration's travel ban. It explores why talented migration drives the knowledge economy, describes how universities and firms govern skilled admissions, explains the controversies of the H-1B visa used by firms like Google and Apple, and discusses the economic inequalities and superstar firms that global talent flows produce. The United States has been the steward of a global gift, and this book explains the huge leadership decision it now faces and how it can become even more competitive for attracting tomorrow's talent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate responsibility, is it just another passing business fad that will fizzle out, or is it a need that is here to stay? Businesses have constantly been reminded of the benefits of being responsible and the risks of poor corporate responsibility performance. However, there are also evidence of firms with good corporate responsibility records that have not been successful and firms with poor corporate responsibility performance that could reward shareholders handsomely. Offshore outsourcing of business activities from developed countries to developing countries does not only relocate investments and jobs, it has also brought about new business demands on suppliers activities and their social and environmental impact. This book explores the nature and extent of corporate responsibility practices among the electrical and electronics firms that engaged in offshore outsourcing activities in Malaysia. Specifically, the following areas are explored, firstly, the impact of offshore outsourcing activities on corporate responsibility practices; secondly, the influence of the local regulatory environment on corporate responsibility practices; and thirdly, the effect of corporate responsibility practices on business performance.

This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As corporate states join the universe of nation states, the challenge of securing both corporate social responsibility and accountability becomes one of the core challenges facing the social and legal order. Bryan Horrigan s masterly, comprehensive account of this protean subject offers an assured guide for future thought and action. Paul Redmond, Professor, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia CSR continues to be one of the most important aspects of business in the global economy receiving much attention from business managers, government leaders and academics. While continuing to increase in prominence, there are many aspects and many approaches evolving in this global phenomenon. In this book Horrigan provides the most complete interdisciplinary analysis of these perspectives yet undertaken combining theoretical insights with practical examples while pointing the way forward towards future developments. David Crowther, Professor, De Montfort University, UK and Social Responsibility Research Network In this book Professor Horrigan brings together the many facets of, and perspectives on, the concept [of CSR]. . . and he places them in the context of the development of thought in the crossover from the 20th to the 21st century. . . I doubt whether such an ambitious and comprehensive account of the concept has been previously attempted. There is no doubt that it is a hugely important subject in today s world; and one which will not go away. I believe that the book will be valuable to all who need to deal with this issue, whether as government officials, regulators, businessmen, lawyers, academics, media commentators or concerned citizens. The Right Honourable Lord Butler of Brockwell KG, GCB, CVO, was Secretary of the United Kingdom Cabinet and Head of the Home Civil Service from 1988 to 1998. 1998 2008 Master of University College Oxford and a Non-Executive Director of ICI plc and of HSBC Holdings, also Chairman of the Board's Corporate Social Responsibility Committee This timely and thorough book offers one of the most wide-ranging, inter-disciplinary, and cross-jurisdictional analyses of corporate social responsibility so far in the 21st century. Professor Bryan Horrigan spans subjects as diverse and topical as global corporate responsibility and governance debates, practical guidelines for responsible businesses and their professional advisers, governmental roles in corporate social responsibility, corporations and human rights, and the new era of enlightened shareholder value . He also highlights an emerging transnational and comparative body of law, regulation, and practice on corporate social responsibility. Illustrated throughout with meaningful controversies and examples, the book also highlights the major recent global developments in corporate social responsibility already this century, focusing especially on Europe, the UK, North America, and Australasia, and charting its future regulatory and research directions worldwide. The book s scholarly foundation, up-to-date coverage, and accessible style will appeal particularly to academic researchers and students of corporate social responsibility in the fields of law, business, management, economics, and political science in a number of countries. It will also be of great interest and use to those whose work involves corporate social responsibility within government, business, and civil society.
