Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there an experience as profound, as indefinable, as cherished, as savoured as fresh love, that sweet love in youth? As if on cue, we are wrenched away from the frivolities of childhood and launched into a new awakening of soul and self. The mere touch of a gentle hand, the soft gaze of dewy bright eyes, the gait, the strength of voice, the flick of a lock of hair stirs within us urgent passions and yearnings that Nature had set aside for us, latent and dormant. But what recollection of youth can be held more dear than that first kiss of a first love? It is the treasure of our memorabilia. This is, for the most part, a love story that had its stirrings in a most unusual place in Canada, and which began with Warren’s first kiss from his first love. This is a story for all those who have known love, real love! This is also a story of “memories,” safeguarded and cherished. But then, there is much more ...
Book Synopsis The Diary of a Professional Experiencer by : Eric Morris
Download or read book The Diary of a Professional Experiencer written by Eric Morris and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2011-05-06 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diary of a Professional Experiencer is the sixth in a series of books written by Eric Morris. Unlike his other books, this is a very personal account of his frustrations and struggles as he strives to discover how the actor creates reality on the stage or in film. Though the style is autobiographical, this is, nevertheless, a book about acting. It details the specific discoveries and breakthroughs in the evolution of what Morris believes is the most complete acting system to date. The old adage, Necessity is the mother of invention, truly describes his drive to discover, explore, and experiment with incredible techniques for liberating the actor so that acting goes beyond the conventional into the experiential. The book also chronicles Morris' encounters with many famous teachers, actors, directors, producers, and writers, as well as not-so-famous people, who influenced, challenged, and inspired him on his journey. It starts with Morris' early childhood and growing-up years in Chicago and goes on to describe the trials and tribulations of pursuing a career in Hollywood, as well as the fulfillment that comes from creating a truly life-changing approach to living and acting.

Download or read book Corky Lee's Asian America written by Corky Lee and published by Clarkson Potter. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of over 200 breathtaking photos celebrating the history and cultural impact of the Asian American social justice movement, from a beloved photographer who sought to change the world, one photograph at a time “For generations, Corky taught us how to see ourselves—as individuals and as a community.”—Hua Hsu, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Stay True Known throughout his lifetime as the “undisputed, unofficial Asian American photographer laureate,” the late photojournalist Corky Lee documented Asian American and Pacific Islander communities for fifty years, breaking the stereotype of Asian Americans as docile, passive, and, above all, foreign to this country. Corky Lee’s Asian America is a stunning retrospective of his life’s work--a selection of the best photographs from his vast collection, from his start in New York’s Chinatown in the 1970s to his coverage of diverse Asian American communities across the country until his untimely passing in 2021. Corky Lee's Asian America traces Lee’s decades-long quest for photographic justice, following Asian American social movements for recognition and rights alongside his artistic development as an activist social photographer. Iconic photographs feature protests against police brutality in New York in the 1970s, a Sikh man draped in an American flag after 9/11, and a reenactment of the completion of the transcontinental railroad of 1869 featuring descendants of Chinese railroad workers, and his last photos of community life and struggle during the coronavirus pandemic. Asian American writers, artists, activists, and friends of Lee reflect on his life and career and provide rich historical and cultural context to his photographs, including a foreword from writer Hua Hsu and contributions from artist Ai Weiwei, filmmaker Renée Tajima-Peña, writer Helen Zia, photographer Alan Chin, historian Gordon Chang, playwright David Henry Hwang, and more. Featuring never-before-seen photographs alongside his best-known images, Corky Lee’s Asian America represents Lee’s mission to chronicle a history of inclusion, resistance, ethnic pride, and patriotism. This is a remarkable documentation of vital moments in Asian American history and a timely reminder that it’s also a history that we continue to make.

Book Synopsis An Irish Navvy – The Diary of an Exile by : Donall MacAmhlaigh
Download or read book An Irish Navvy – The Diary of an Exile written by Donall MacAmhlaigh and published by Gill & Macmillan Ltd. This book was released on 2003-03-05 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIrish construction workers in post-war Britain are celebrated in song and story. Donall MacAmhlaigh kept a diary as he worked the sites, danced in the Irish halls, drank in Irish pubs and lived the life of the roving Irish navvy. Work was hard, dirty and dangerous, followed by pints in the Admiral Rodney, the Shamrock, the Cattle Market Tavern and others. Living conditions were basic at best. This vivid picture of an Irish navvy's life in England in the 1950s mirrors that of an entire generation who left Ireland without education or hope. Days without food or work, the hardships of work camps, lonesome partings after trips home, periods of intense isolation and bitter reflection were all part of the experience. • Also available: Hard Road to Klondike.

Book excerpt: The urban classic coming-of-age story about sex, drugs, and basketball Jim Carroll grew up to become a renowned poet and punk rocker. But in this memoir of the mid-1960s, set during his coming-of-age from 12 to 15, he was a rebellious teenager making a place and a name for himself on the unforgiving streets of New York City. During these years, he chronicled his experiences, and the result is a diary of unparalleled candor that conveys his alternately hilarious and terrifying teenage existence. Here is Carroll prowling New York City--playing basketball, hustling, stealing, getting high, getting hooked, and searching for something pure. The Basketball Diaries was the basis for the film of the same name starring Leonardo DiCaprio. "I met him in 1970, and already he was pretty much universally recognized as the best poet of his generation. . . . The work was sophisticated and elegant. He had beauty." -- Patti Smith

Book Synopsis Private Lord Crawford's Great War Diaries by : Christopher Arnander
Download or read book Private Lord Crawford's Great War Diaries written by Christopher Arnander and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Britain’s only Cabinet-level politician to serve in the ranks during World War I, diary entries and letters detailing life on the Western Front. This unusual account is written by the 27th Earl of Crawford and Balcarres, an active Lancashire MP for eighteen years until he inherited the title on his father’s death in 1913. In 1915 his sense of patriotic duty drove him to join the RAMC as a Private, although he was married with seven children, head of a large company and well over age. Despite his privileged status in civilian life, he cheerfully served as a humble medical orderly on the Western Front for some fourteen months and was given responsibility for two operating theatres. A gifted author and diarist, his daily entries provide a fascinating insight into life near the front over this period and, together with his letters home, his writings reflect the stark contrast between his home life and the one he experienced in Flanders. Of particular interest are his astute observations on his contemporaries of all ranks, the conduct of the war, medical services and life in wartime France. Remarkably he never complains at his lot (although often sharply critical of GHQ and politicians) or regrets his decision. As the author was the only Cabinet-level politician to serve “in the ranks” during the conflict, this is a record without any parallel. In 1916 Crawford was persuaded eventually to return to London and join Asquith’s Cabinet before staying on under Lloyd George until 1922. After the war, he became a director, trustee or advisor of several museums, such as the British Museum, National Gallery and others. The Crawford Papers (his diaries, edited by Prof. John Vincent) describe his civilian experiences from 1892 to 1940 and are seen as an invaluable source for students of politics, art, industry and society in Britain. The book contains three maps and seventy-five illustrations. This fascinating book fills a needy gap at a time of unprecedented interest in The Great War. Praise for Private Lord Crawford’s Great War Diaries One of The Times “Books of the Year” 2013 “[Crawford’s] previously unpublished war diaries, meticulously edited by his grandson, offer a fascinating glimpse into life at the front and in the upper reaches of politics at home—and contain some frank comments on his former Cabinet colleagues.” —Literary Review “Lord Crawford was the only Cabinet-level politician to serve “in the ranks” during World War I as a private. A gifted author and diarist, his daily entries provide a fascinating insight into life in the frontline over a fourteen-month period.” —History Scotland

Book Synopsis An Emotional Gauntlet by : Stuart J Wright
Download or read book An Emotional Gauntlet written by Stuart J Wright and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stuart J Wright tells the gripping story of a World War II American aircrew flying missions from Old Buckenham, England in a B-24 Liberator bomber they nicknamed Corky. This is a true account based on years of research and correspondence with crew members and their families. Wright adds a dimension rarely explored in other World War II memoirs and narratives, beginning the chronicle during peacetime when the men of the aircrew are introduced as civilians - kids during the 1920s. As they mature through the years of the Great Depression to face a world at war, questions are raised about 'just' and 'unjust' wars, imperialism and patriotism. Jingoistic sentimentality is resisted in favour of objectivity, as the feelings and motivations of the crew members are explored: the Chinese American air gunner had hoped to serve in the U.S. Army Air Force to fight against the Japanese invaders of his homeland; the Jewish navigator felt compelled to join the battle against Nazi Germany. In recounting the harrowing conditions and horrors of bombing missions over Europe, An Emotional Gauntlet emphasizes the interpersonal relationships within the crew and the spirit these men shared. As pilot Jack Nortridge regularly assured his crew, 'If you fly with me, I'm going to bring you home.' This book is a testament to their strength and determination.'A compelling story. Wright establishes the strong spirit these men shared, based on their pilot's pledge that he would bring them back - back from each mission and back to resume their peacetime lives. "An Emotional Gauntlet stands out for its integration of pre-war civilian life with wartime experiences. To me, this is the essence of America's story in the war, and I am glad to find a book that comprehends this and tells the story from this perspective".' - Jerome Klinkowitz, author of Yanks Over Europe: American Flyers in World War II.
