The 'Council recommendation 2009/C of 9 June 2009 on patient safety, including the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections' and the European Commission's related implementation reports, stressed the need for fostering education and improving the training of healthcare personnel at all levels, ensuring adequate numbers of trained infection control and hospital hygiene (IC/HH) staff. Understanding the current trends in Europe in IC/HH training for healthcare workers (HCWs) is an essential pre-requisite for the definition and implementation of policies and programmes aimed at increasing and harmonising capacity and training in IC/HH all over Europe. The 'Improving Patient Safety in Europe' (IPSE) project (2006) and the ECDCcommissioned project 'Training in Infection Control in Europe' (TRICE) (2010) conducted surveys of the status of IC/HH training in Europe and developed a document called 'Core competencies for IC/HH professionals in the European Union' In 2012, ECDC launched the 'Training in Infection Control in Europe - Implementation Strategy' (TRICE-IS) project, which included a third survey to assess IC/HH training capacity in Europe. This technical report describes the results of the 2014 survey on the evolution of the IC/HH capacity and training in Europe, comparing 2014 data with those from the two previous surveys conducted in 2006 (IPSE) and 2010 (TRICE).
