This study revealed that the carbonyl groups can fit into the crystalline lattice of polyethylene. This was noted by infrared dichroism measurements. X-ray studies also indicated some distortion of the ethylene unit cell parameters due to incorporation of the carbonyl group in the lattice. The dynamic mechanical spectra of polyethylene and of the copolymer were essentially identical indicating that the presence of the carbonyl (1%) does not significantly alter such bulk properties. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gamma-initiated copolymerization of ethylene with a number of different monomers was studied at 20 deg C and initial pressures to 680 atmospheres. The experiments were conducted statically in two-phase systems with the exception of the ethylene-carbon monoxide system. Isolation of the copolymers was effected by solvent extraction and fractional precipitation techniques. Infrared spectroscopy was used for identification. The composition was determined by elemental analysis. A partial evaluation of some of the reaction products including crystalline melting points, densities, solubility characteristics, and molecular weights are given. Evidence of ethylene copolymerization was established with each of the following monomers: styrene, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, allyl acetate, isobutylene, chlorotrifluoroethylene, trans 2-butene, methyl acrylate, isoprene, propylene, vinyl chloride, 1-butene, cis 2-butene, Co vinyl pyrrolidone, methyl vinyl ketone, and divinyl benzene. The experimental data obtained in the study of the ethylene-carbon monoxide system were found to obey a linear form of the copolymer composition equation. The ratio of specific rate constants for carbon monoxide and ethylene (alpha) was found to have a value of 22.0, indicating that carbon monoxide is a monomer, is activated to the extent that it adds 22 times as fast as an ethylene monomer to an ethylene free radical chain end. Book excerpt: A series of ethylene--carbon monoxide copolymers have been prepared by chemical catalysis and 6°Co gamma radiation induction, ranging in carbon monoxide content from 41 to 49%. A correlation has been established between the method of preparation, the carbon monoxide content of the copolymers and the mechanical properties of the resulting products. Present evaluations indicate that copolymers containing approx. 50% carbon monoxide prepared by 6°Co gamma induction have significantly improved mechanical properties over copolymers prepared by conventional chemical free-radical catalysis. Based on these results, it is suggested that further experimentation be conducted in radiation-induced copolymerization especially with the use of electron beam machines presently available to industry.

Book excerpt: Copolymerization of carbon monoxide and ethylene has been studied since 1940s, while the originally discovered catalyst was a nickel compound, cationic palladium (II) catalyst containing bidentate diphosphine and nitrogen ligands showed excellent activity at mild conditions. As a result, palladium catalysts became the mainstay of research in this area. In 1990s, Shell and BP started production of polyketone in full industrial using Pd-catalysts. The large scale production was then stopped at the beginning of this century for unannounced reasons, but the use of the expensive Pd as the catalyst is possibly a major problem for the commercial processes. Cationic nickel (II) complexes had much lower activity than the cationic Pd catalysts. The most efficient nickel (II) catalyst containing o-methoxyphenyl-modified P-P ligand showed moderate activity as 184 gPK/(gNi*h-1). In comparison, the commercial Pd catalysts have the activity of 6000 gPK/(gPd*h-1). Neutral nickel catalysts have been shown by other groups to have improved activities. In this work, we successfully designed and synthesized two zwitterionic nickel (II) catalysts. The highest activity can reach 8993 gPK/(gNi*h-1) and 15664 gPK/(gNi*h-1) respectively. Also, we isolated the real active intermediate, Ni-H, in the catalysis process.
