Roughly one in 11 children and one in 12 adults have asthma, which can emerge for the first time in people in their 70s and 80s. Yet approximately 97% deaths from asthma occur among adults. Tragically, Asthma UK suggests that improved care could avoid 75% of hospital admissions for asthma and up to 90% of deaths from the disease. This book looks at the specific issues, factors and interventions that can alleviate and prevent asthma in adults. Asthma in adults presents different challenges to that in children. Older people may perceive symptoms differently, or blame them on advancing age. Or they may face problems with concurrent medicines, or with diseases that can complicate management, such as emphysema, heart failure, bronchitis and COPD. Topics include: * Why asthma in adults is becoming more common * What is asthma? And why is it different for adults? The signs and symptoms * What causes asthma? Allergy, occupation and beyond * Diagnosing asthma, and the diseases that can complicate diagnosis * Drug treatments * Self-help including how to address risks at work.Asthma in adults rarely gains the attention it deserves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bronchitis and emphysema affect some three million people in the U.K. and kill 30,000 people each year. They account for more loss of time from work than any other form of illness, and are usually caused by smoking, which leads to inflammation of the bronchi. As the lungs become increasingly damaged, shortness of breath develops even on moderate exertion, such as climbing stairs. As the condition worsens, simple tasks such as washing or shaving cause marked shortness of breath, and eventually fighting for breath occurs even at rest. The condition cannot be cured. However, further deterioration can be prevented, and this new edition brings us up to date with changes in treatment, though stopping smoking is still key. Difficulty in breathing can be eased by using inhalers or nebulisers which deliver drugs that open up the airways called bronchodilators (eg 'Ventolin'). Inhaled steroids (eg 'Becotide') are useful in reducing inflammation of the air tubes. Many people need to have oxygen several times a day, and dust, fumes and pollution should be avoided. Lifestyle changes may also help, such as losing weight and taking exercise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug addiction is no longer - if indeed it ever has been - a problem confined to tower blocks and prisons. With an estimated 250,000 problematic drug users in the UK in every section of society, the UK has the highest levels of addiction and multi-drug consumption and the second-highest rate of drug-related deaths in Europe, according to a report on behalf of the UK Drug Policy Commission. Whether it's a son, husband, daughter or mother, having a problematic drug user in the family is disastrous. Family members have to deal with questions they never dreamed they'd have to answer. Should you continue to allow a drug user to live with you? What should you do if he or she steals from you? What's the best way to encourage him or her to seek treatment? Can you help him or her 'detox' by yourself? What are the health risks to the addict and his family? Why has he or she become addicted in the first place? And, most importantly, what help is available to help your family get through this? This book provides a simple, non-ideological guide for people whose families are affected by drug use. Topics include: defining addiction; types of drugs and what they do; how drug use impacts on the family; your feelings - how to cope; helping the addict; accessing further help - what's available both for families and for addicts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A certain amount of worry and stress can be energising. They may act as a natural warning system when something is wrong, and can help people meet deadlines and complete tasks. High levels of both are however counter-productive, and all too common. Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is believed to affect some two million people in the UK, while the World Health Organisation estimates that half of all cases go undiagnosed. These figures put anxiety only second to depression as a mental health problem. Topics covered in this book include: * What is 'normal' worry and when is it useful - e.g., sitting an exam, completing a work assignment * signs and symptoms of excessive worry and stress * tackling worry and stress - analysing the problem, accepting uncertainty * developing problem-solving skills, including prioritising and time management * the value of exercise (helps release serotonin) * diet, e.g. eliminating sugar, caffeine and alcohol * relaxation and breathing * when worry gets out of hand - what to do if you need help * treatment - cognitive behavioural therapy, medication * support groups.

It describes the treatment modalities for mild and moderate-to-severe psoriasis, including topical, phototherapeutic and conventional systemic treatments (e.g. acitretine, methotrexate and cyclosporine), as well as biological therapies (e.g. alefacept, efalizumab, etanercept, adalimumab and infliximab). The chapters on biological therapies focus on key safety issues. Further chapters focus on such topics as the management of childhood psoriasis and psoriasis in distinctive locations, such as the scalp, face, flexures, palm/soles and nails. Finally, future therapeutic modalities, with the focus on small molecules and potential biological therapies, are discussed. This publication will make significant reading to dermatologists and all physicians dealing with psoriasis, such as general practitioners, psychiatrists, rheumatologists, cardiologists and diabetologists.

While anti-epileptic drugs have a major role preventing seizure activity, they may not be totally effective in achieving control, and there is a strong burgeoning interest in lifestyle measures and complementary therapies which may help. This book is intended to be a trusted source to help people with epilepsy make sense of the treatment choices, given that epilepsy is not a single condition and some treatments may work for some but not other forms of the condition. Each chapter includes information about the treatment, evidence, whether it will work for your type of epilepsy, and practical considerations.
