Book Synopsis The Cold War by : John Lamberton Harper
Download or read book The Cold War written by John Lamberton Harper and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East-West struggle for supremacy from 1945 to 1989 shaped the lives of hundreds of millions and brought the world to the brink of disaster on several occasions. More than two decades on, the debate over its causes and dynamics is far from over. Drawing on the latest archival evidence and scholarly research, prize-winning historian John Lamberton Harper provides a concise, briskly-written assessment of the Cold War. Why did it start, and eventually envelope nearly every corner of the planet? Why did it stay "cold," at least in its original, European theatre? Why did it end, and who should take the credit? Harper illuminates the deep-seated behavioural patterns within both the Soviet Union and the United States: the search for security through expansion and military might, the belief in a "messianic" mission to uplift humanity, but also a readiness to live and let live based on membership in a common state system and a shared interest in survival. He stresses ways in which internal competitions for political power tilted both the U.S. and Soviet systems towards bellicosity and obsessive preparation for a hot war that no one seriously intended to begin. It is a story of delusions of omnipotence and rash behavior, punctuated by moments of redeeming statesmanship and self-restraint. Harper concludes that, rather than triumphalism, a clear look back at the Cold War's close calls with catastrophe and enormous cost in lives and treasure ought to evoke a sense of regret and humility, as well as relief.

Book excerpt: Katja’s fairy tale romance with her dentist comes to an abrupt end when she learns that he is having an affair. Just when it seems that things can’t get any worse, her husband is killed in a car accident. Filled with grief, Katja thinks she is going crazy, but then two mysterious men enter her life: Dr. Frederich Blank and Armin the fireman, whose uniform looks like it came from a costume shop. Armin cannot see Blank, who is recently deceased and has only returned to haunt the neighborhood in hope of visiting his wife one last time. Katja begins a relationship with Armin, which leads to serious consequences, just as holes begin appearing in Dr. Blank. When the doctor starts to fade away, Katja desperately applies bandages to patch his holes. In one moving scene, Blank visits his wife’s apartment and Katja, lifted up in the cherrypicker of Armin’s fire engine, watches the visit through the upper-floor window. But Katja quickly realizes that Blank’s wife cannot see him; she merely continues to kiss her new lover. Blank spends his remaining days easing Katja into her new role as a soon to be mother.
Download or read book Bistronomy written by Jane Sigal and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the IACP Cookbook Award, Chefs and Restaurants French food reimagined by a new generation of chefs. There is a new movement afoot in Paris. Young chefs have turned their backs on stuffiness and are creating an experience that is more fun and a lot less formal. In tiny independent bistros mostly on the outskirts of the city, they are turning out fantastically inventive food that bypasses many of the old sauces and relies instead on the vibrancy of responsibly sourced ingredients. Because they are working in tiny kitchens with little or no staff, advance preparation is esteemed. (Good news for the home cook looking to crib kitchen notes.) Among their tricks (which could fit easily into anyone’s repertoire) are finding inspired uses for humble root vegetables like rutabaga and parsnips, presenting a vegetable raw and cooked in the same dish, and revitalizing the classic crumble for dessert. In Bistronomy, Jane Sigal captures these chefs’ creative approach, culling recipes that translate their genius in ways the home cook can achieve. From L’Ami Jean’s chef Stéphane Jégo comes the soulful but unexpected Winter Squash Soup, accented with a cocoa whipped cream. Haricots Verts Salad with Strawberries and Feta is a charmer from Atsumi Sota at Clown Bar. And there is the showstopping Cherry and Beet Pavlova from Sean Kelly. The more than one hundred dishes in Bistronomy prove that these Paris bistros have become the idea factories of the culinary world. Like a trip to Paris, Bistronomy will make you fall in love with French cooking all over again.

Book excerpt: Order has collapsed in Deepgate. The chained city is now in ruins, and the Deadsands beyond are full of fleeing refugees. Meanwhile, the Spine militia is trying to halt the exodus of panicking citizens through brutal force. Rachel and the young angel Dill are dragged off to the Temple torture chambers . . . but strange things start to happen as a foul red mist rises from the abyss beneath the city. For the god Ulcis's death has left the gates to Hell unguarded, and certain forces in the fathomless darkness beneath Deepgate have noticed an opportunity. Only the offspring of the dread goddess Ayen understand this new danger. Already, Cospinol, god of brine and fog, is coming to save his brother's temple -- and to hunt down Ulcis's murderers. His foul, fog-wreathed skyship has already reached Sandport, bringing along its own version of hell. By now, Rachel just wants to keep her companion alive. Escaping their prison, and with enemies closing in on all sides, she is forced to undertake a perilous journey across the Deadsands towards the distant land of Pandemeria. But there the battlefield at Coreollis is fated to witness a clash of powers -- a contest between men and gods and archons and slaves, all forced into desperate alliances.
