Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Minerals In the preparation of this little book the writer has striven to answer questions rather than to rehearse facts. It has been made increasingly plain to him, in the course of his experience that the bulk of the Museum public demand not a text book, however simple, but a statement of the principles upon which may be built up an understanding of such an assemblage of natural objects as the one that has been brought together in the Morgan Memorial Hall of the American Museum of Natural History. The present volume is then an attempt to put into a simple and popular form the How? And the Why? Of mineralogy, to the end that the Visitor-may be enabled to interpret what he sees around him in this Hall. To an extent it has been written around the Introductory Series of the Collee tion, but in a larger sense the book and the exhibit have been prepared together, so that they are closely linked in idea and presentation. Much of the text has been suggested by questions put to the writer by those who in times past have sought information regarding the things of which it treats, and it is in the hope that some of these questions may thus be answered that he now presents it to them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Mineralogy and Geology A new edition of the following work having been call ed for, the author has been induced to remodel it, by the conviction that a method of teaching and studying the science different from, and superior to, that which had for merly been pursued in this country, ought to be adopted. That method is well known to have possessed too much of a traditionary character, and to have obliged the stu dent to depend more upon the ipse. Diorit of his instructor than his own investigation. In preparing this edition it has been the design of the author, so far as it was in his power, to furnish the student with a guide by means of which he might be satisfactorily conducted through the process of examining minerals, to the attainment of cor rect results. To accomplish this, sufficient information is given in the following pages, to enable him rightly to employ the characters of mineral substances and to trace the relations existing between them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Descriptive Mineralogy IN the preparation of the present volume, owing to the large and constantly increasing stock of mine ralogical literature, the chief difficulty has been the selection and compression of the material so as to give a fair general view Of the subject within the space available. For \this purpose and in order to carry out the general ideas Of the series, only the more important Species, whether from a natural history or an economic point of view, are described in much detail, the general relations of the individual species in each group being indicated in a preliminary statement at the commencement Of each chapter. It was originally intended to illustrate the descriptions mainly by the figures in the 'treatise on Systematic Mineralogy;' but during the progress of the work, the writer was fortunate enough to acquire the wood blocks used in the illustration of Brooke and Miller, ' which have been generally regarded as the best examples of their class ever executed, and he has used a selec tion of these in preference to perspective projections. As in the former volume, the double system Of nota tion is followed - that of Miller according to Weiss's order, and the corresponding symbols of Naumann for forms, but the former is alone used for faces. In the figures of the Oblique system it must be borne in mind that sometimes the slope of the Oblique axis is to the right and sometimes to the left, and therefore to bring these into accordance with the assumption Of a uniform forward slope the plane Of projection is, in the former case, the positive, and in the latter the negative clinopinakoid, which will give a corre sponding difference in the indices of the type faces, while Naumann's form-symbols are unchanged. The writer, having been absent from England while a considerable number of sheets were in the printer's hands, is much indebted to his friend Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Mineralogy, Geology, and Mineral Analysis, Vol. 1 of 2 The work which I now offer to the public, is the result of a laborious investigation which has occupied almost the whole of my spare time during a period of about ten years. The object in view, was to ascertain the chemical constitution of the different minerals which occur on the surface of the globe. For this purpose, I subjected to a rigid analysis every species that I could procure, except those which had been already investigated with sufficient accuracy by other chemists. During the course of this investigation, I analyzed several hundred specimens, and at least as many more were subjected to analysis by the numerous pupils who attended my laboratory, not a few of whom acquired great dexterity and accuracy in analysis, and have already, or speedily will distinguish themselves as analytical chemists. During these investigations, I met with a considerable number of new species hitherto overlooked by mineralogists, chiefly in specimens from Ireland, North America, and the West of Scotland, These new species, amounting to nearly 50, will be found described in the first volume of this work. Every true mineral species is a chemical compound, the constituents of which are united in definite proportions, and the greater number of them consist but of a very few ingredients. What makes it difficult or impossible to determine these ingredients with the requisite accuracy, is, that very few minerals are free from a mixture of foreign matter interspersed among their particles.
