Book excerpt: When the Board of Directors of the Belgian Ophthalmological Soci ety, in its session of November 26th 1978, asked me to prepare a report on strabismus to be presented at the joint meeting of the Dutch and Belgian Ophthalmological Societies to be held on June 13th 1981, I felt greatly honored but still more overwhelmed by the immensity of the task. I took advantage of the complete liberty given to me by the Board of Directors, first to limit the work to one particular form of strabismus, i.e. the convergent comitant form; second, to seek the help of what I thought to be the best strabologists in the Low Countries; third, to aim not at an encyclopedic treatise but at a practical volume destined to the general ophthalmologist. This volume is thus limited to the various aspects of convergent strabismus, more accurately of comitant convergent strabismus. The omission of the word" comitant" is purposely made to avoid the dif fic'ulties accompanying the explanation of this term and all the acroba tics needed to explain that most comitant strabismus are not complete ly comitant. The choice of this particular form of strabismus seems logical. First of all, it is the most common form of strabismus. On the other hand, most principles concerning examination and treatment can with some modifications be applied to other forms of strabismus.

Why does a sea lily look like a palm tree? And why is a sea lily called a “lily” when it is a marine animal and not a plant? Many marine animals bear a noticeable similarity in form to land-dwelling plants. And yet these marine animal forms evolved in the oceans first; land plants independently and convergently evolved similar forms much later in geologic time. In this book, George McGhee analyzes patterns of convergent evolution on Earth and argues that these patterns offer lessons for the search for life elsewhere in the universe. Our Earth is a water world; 71 percent of the earth's surface is covered by water. The fossil record shows that multicellular life on dry land is a new phenomenon; for the vast majority of the earth's history—3,500 million years of its 4,560 million years of existence—complex life existed only in the oceans. Explaining that convergent biological evolution occurs because of limited evolutionary pathways, McGhee examines examples of convergent evolution in forms of feeding, immobility and mobility, defense, and organ systems. McGhee suggests that the patterns of convergent evolution that we see in our own water world indicate the potential for similar convergent forms in other water worlds. We should search for extraterrestrial life on water worlds, and for technological life on water worlds with continental landmasses.

It is much more likely that these independent origins represent similar solutions to the challenge of growing food than that they are due purely to chance. They exhibit as narrow belt structure in the rigid outer layer of the Earth, corresponding to subduction zones at lithospheric mantle depths and orogenic belts at crustal depths. The type, geometry, and thermal structure of subduction zones have critical impacts on subduction processes and nature of products, resulting in a variety of magmatic rocks and ore deposits at convergent margins. Identification and classification of the physical structure and chemical variation at convergent margins as well as confirming their correlation with specific subduction types and stages are of pivotality to understand the spatiotemporal interaction between asthenosphere and lithosphere in orogenic belts. For places where magmatic arcs get partially or entirely destroyed by surface and/or subduction erosion, adjacent sedimentary rocks are ideal geological records for paleotectonic reconstruction.

Book excerpt: We explore the capability of digital-large angle convergent beam electron diffraction (D-LACBED) data for the structural refinement of single crystals. To achieve this, we use three materials as test cases. We use corundum for atomic position refi nement, copper and gallium arsenide for Debye-Waller factor (DWF) re finement. D-LACBED patterns are found to be extremely sensitive to atomic position, within 0.4 pm of reference X-ray values. The patterns are less sensitive to DWF (using the independent atom model - IAM) but nonetheless give good agreement to X-ray and Mossbauer radiation values for copper. We find the IAM to be insufficient for accurate refinement of gallium arsenide due to the influence of previously suggested strong anharmonicity and bonding within the material. Finally, we use simulation to explore the sensitivity of D-LACBED patterns through most re fineable structural parameters, providing context to the aforementioned results. During the analysis we see that higher g-vector patterns within the D-LACBED data may be more sensitive to structural parameters in general.

Hominins began using stone tools at least 2.6 million years ago, perhaps even 3.4 million years ago. Given the nearly ubiquitous use of stone tools by humans and their ancestors, the study of lithic technology offers an important line of inquiry into questions of evolution and behavior. This book examines convergence in stone tool-making, cases in which functional or developmental constraints result in similar forms in independent lineages. Identifying examples of convergence, and distinguishing convergence from divergence, refutes hypotheses that suggest physical or cultural connection between far-flung prehistoric toolmakers. Employing phylogenetic analysis and stone-tool replication, the contributors show that similarity of tools can be caused by such common constraints as the fracture properties of stone or adaptive challenges rather than such unlikely phenomena as migration of toolmakers over an Arctic ice shelf.
