Book Synopsis Foundations Of Photonic Crystal Fibres by : Frederic Zolla
Download or read book Foundations Of Photonic Crystal Fibres written by Frederic Zolla and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-01-19 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide expert guidance to researchers experienced in classical technology, as well as to those new to the field. A variety of perspectives on Photonic Crystal Fibres (PCFs) is presented together with a thorough treatment of the theoretical, physical and mathematical foundations of the optics of PCFs. The range of expertise of the authors is reflected in the depth of coverage, which will benefit those approaching the subject for a variety of reasons and from diverse backgrounds. The study of PCFs enables us to understand how best to optimize their applications in communication or sensing, as devices confining light via new mechanisms (such as photonic bandgap effects). It also assists us in understanding them as physically important structures which require a sophisticated mathematical analysis when considering questions related to the definition of effective refractive index, and the link between large finite systems and infinite periodic systems. This book offers access to essential information on foundation concepts of a dynamic and evolving subject. It is ideal for those who wish to explore further an emerging and important branch of optics and photonics./a

Book Synopsis Discontinuous Galerkin Methods by : Bernardo Cockburn
Download or read book Discontinuous Galerkin Methods written by Bernardo Cockburn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A class of finite element methods, the Discontinuous Galerkin Methods (DGM), has been under rapid development recently and has found its use very quickly in such diverse applications as aeroacoustics, semi-conductor device simula tion, turbomachinery, turbulent flows, materials processing, MHD and plasma simulations, and image processing. While there has been a lot of interest from mathematicians, physicists and engineers in DGM, only scattered information is available and there has been no prior effort in organizing and publishing the existing volume of knowledge on this subject. In May 24-26, 1999 we organized in Newport (Rhode Island, USA), the first international symposium on DGM with equal emphasis on the theory, numerical implementation, and applications. Eighteen invited speakers, lead ers in the field, and thirty-two contributors presented various aspects and addressed open issues on DGM. In this volume we include forty-nine papers presented in the Symposium as well as a survey paper written by the organiz ers. All papers were peer-reviewed. A summary of these papers is included in the survey paper, which also provides a historical perspective of the evolution of DGM and its relation to other numerical methods. We hope this volume will become a major reference in this topic. It is intended for students and researchers who work in theory and application of numerical solution of convection dominated partial differential equations. The papers were written with the assumption that the reader has some knowledge of classical finite elements and finite volume methods.

Book Synopsis Photonic Crystals: Mathematical Analysis and Numerical Approximation by : Willy Dörfler
Download or read book Photonic Crystals: Mathematical Analysis and Numerical Approximation written by Willy Dörfler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concentrates on the mathematics of photonic crystals, which form an important class of physical structures investigated in nanotechnology. Photonic crystals are materials which are composed of two or more different dielectrics or metals, and which exhibit a spatially periodic structure, typically at the length scale of hundred nanometers. In the mathematical analysis and the numerical simulation of the partial differential equations describing nanostructures, several mathematical difficulties arise, e. g., the appropriate treatment of nonlinearities, simultaneous occurrence of continuous and discrete spectrum, multiple scales in space and time, and the ill-posedness of these problems. This volume collects a series of lectures which introduce into the mathematical background needed for the modeling and simulation of light, in particular in periodic media, and for its applications in optical devices.

Book Synopsis Statistical Properties of Deterministic Systems by : Jiu Ding
Download or read book Statistical Properties of Deterministic Systems written by Jiu Ding and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of Tsinghua University Texts, "Statistical Properties of Deterministic Systems" discusses the fundamental theory and computational methods of the statistical properties of deterministic discrete dynamical systems. After introducing some basic results from ergodic theory, two problems related to the dynamical system are studied: first the existence of absolute continuous invariant measures, and then their computation. They correspond to the functional analysis and numerical analysis of the Frobenius-Perron operator associated with the dynamical system. The book can be used as a text for graduate students in applied mathematics and in computational mathematics; it can also serve as a reference book for researchers in the physical sciences, life sciences, and engineering. Dr. Jiu Ding is a professor at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Southern Mississippi; Dr. Aihui Zhou is a professor at the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Book Synopsis Nonnegative Matrices, Positive Operators, And Applications by : Aihui Zhou
Download or read book Nonnegative Matrices, Positive Operators, And Applications written by Aihui Zhou and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009-08-24 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonnegative matrices and positive operators are widely applied in science, engineering, and technology. This book provides the basic theory and several typical modern science and engineering applications of nonnegative matrices and positive operators, including the fundamental theory, methods, numerical analysis, and applications in the Google search engine, computational molecular dynamics, and wireless communications.Unique features of this book include the combination of the theories of nonnegative matrices and positive operators as well as the emphasis on applications of nonnegative matrices in the numerical analysis of positive operators, such as Markov operators and Frobenius-Perron operators both of which play key roles in the statistical and stochastic studies of dynamical systems. It can be used as a textbook for an upper level undergraduate or beginning graduate course in advanced matrix theory and/or positive operators as well as for an advanced topics course in operator theory or ergodic theory. In addition, it serves as a good reference for researchers in mathematical sciences, physical sciences, and engineering.
Book Synopsis Spectra and Pseudospectra by : Lloyd N. Trefethen
Download or read book Spectra and Pseudospectra written by Lloyd N. Trefethen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-07 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pure and applied mathematicians, physicists, scientists, and engineers use matrices and operators and their eigenvalues in quantum mechanics, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, acoustics, ecology, numerical analysis, and many other areas. However, in some applications the usual analysis based on eigenvalues fails. For example, eigenvalues are often ineffective for analyzing dynamical systems such as fluid flow, Markov chains, ecological models, and matrix iterations. That's where this book comes in. This is the authoritative work on nonnormal matrices and operators, written by the authorities who made them famous. Each of the sixty sections is written as a self-contained essay. Each document is a lavishly illustrated introductory survey of its topic, complete with beautiful numerical experiments and all the right references. The breadth of included topics and the numerous applications that provide links between fields will make this an essential reference in mathematics and related sciences.
