Book excerpt: This book focuses on the development and implementation of the longitudinal, angular and frequency controls of the Advanced Virgo detector, both from the simulation and experimental point of view, which contributed to Virgo reaching a sensitivity that enabled it to join the LIGO-Virgo O2 run in August 2017. This data taking was very successful, with the first direct detection of a binary black hole merger (GW170814) using the full network of three interferometers, and the first detection and localization of a binary neutron star merger (GW170817). The second generation of gravitational wave detector, Advanced Virgo, is capable of detecting differential displacements of the order of 10–21m. This means that it is highly sensitive to any disturbance, including the seismic movement of the Earth. For this reason an active control is necessary to keep the detector in place with sufficient accuracy.

Book excerpt: The search for gravitational radiation with optical interferometers is gaining momentum worldwide. Beside the VIRGO and GEO gravitational wave observatories in Europe and the two LIGOs in the United States, which have operated successfully during the past decade, further observatories are being completed (KAGRA in Japan) or planned (ILIGO in India). The sensitivity of the current observatories, although spectacular, has not allowed direct discovery of gravitational waves. The advanced detectors (Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo) at present in the development phase will improve sensitivity by a factor of 10, probing the universe up to 200 Mpc for signal from inspiraling binary compact stars. This book covers all experimental aspects of the search for gravitational radiation with optical interferometers. Every facet of the technological development underlying the evolution of advanced interferometers is thoroughly described, from configuration to optics and coatings and from thermal compensation to suspensions and controls. All key ingredients of an advanced detector are covered, including the solutions implemented in first-generation detectors, their limitations, and how to overcome them. Each issue is addressed with special reference to the solution adopted for Advanced VIRGO but constant attention is also paid to other strategies, in particular those chosen for Advanced LIGO.

Book excerpt: With his Ph.D. thesis, presented here in the format of a "Springer Theses", Paul Fulda won the 2012 GWIC thesis prize awarded by the Gravitational Wave International Committee. The impact of thermal noise on future gravitational wave detectors depends on the size and shape of the interrogating laser beam. It had been known since 2006 that, in theory, higher-order Laguerre-Gauss modes could reduce thermal noise. Paul Fulda’s research brings Laguerre-Gauss modes an enormous step forward. His work includes analytical, numerical and experimental work on table-top setups as well as experiments at the Glasgow 10m prototype interferometer. Using numerical simulations the LG33 mode was selected as the optical mode to be tested. Further research by Paul and his colleagues since then concentrated on this mode. Paul has developed and demonstrated simple and effective methods to create this mode with diffractive optics and successfully demonstrated its compatibility with the essential building blocks of gravitational wave detectors, namely, optical cavities, Michelson interferometers and opto-electronic sensing and control systems. Through this work, Laguerre-Gauss modes for interferometers have been transformed from an essentially unknown entity to a well understood option with an experimental basis.

Book excerpt: The work in this thesis was a part of the experiment of squeezed light injection into the LIGO interferometer. The work first discusses the detailed design of the squeezed light source which would be used for the experiment. The specific design is the doubly-resonant, traveling-wave bow-tie cavity squeezed light source with a new modified coherent sideband locking technique. The thesis describes the properties affecting the squeezing magnitudes and offers solutions which improve the gain. The first part also includes the detailed modeling of the back-scattering noise of a traveling Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO). In the second part, the thesis discusses the LIGO Squeezed Light Injection Experiment, undertaken to test squeezed light injection into a 4km interferometric gravitational wave detector. The results show the first ever measurement of squeezing enhancement in a full-scale suspended gravitational wave interferometer with Fabry-Perot arms. Further, it showed that the presence of a squeezed-light source added no additional noise in the low frequency band. The result was the best sensitivity achieved by any gravitational wave detector. The thesis is very well organized with the adequate theoretical background including basics of Quantum Optics, Quantum noise pertaining to gravitational wave detectors in various configurations, along with extensive referencing necessary for the experimental set-up. For any non-experimental scientist, this introduction is a very useful and enjoyable reading. The author is the winner of the 2013 GWIC Theses Prize.

Book excerpt: The articles in this book represent the major contributions at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop that was held from 6 to 9 July 1987 in the magnificent setting of Dyffryn House and Gardens, in St. Nicholas, just outside Cardiff, Wales. The idea for such a meeting arose in discussions that I had in 1985 and 1986 with many of the principal members of the various groups building prototype laser-interferometric gravitational wave detectors. It became clear that the proposals that these groups were planning to submit for large-scale detectors would have to address questions like the following: • What computing hardware might be required to sift through data corning in at rates of several gigabytes per day for gravitational wave events that might last only a second or less and occur as rarely as once a month? • What software would be required for this task, and how much effort would be required to write it? • Given that every group accepted that a worldwide network of detectors operating in co incidence with one another was required in order to provide both convincing evidence of detections of gravitational waves and sufficient information to determine the amplitude and direction of the waves that had been detected, what sort of problems would the necessary data exchanges raise? Yet most of the effort in these groups had, quite naturally, been concentrated on the detector systems.

Book excerpt: One approach to detect gravitational waves, which have been postulated by Albert Einstein in his General Theory of Relativity, is based on interferometric measurements of length variations with a large-scale Michelson interferometer. The detection range of these ground-based observatories is currently limited to approx. 15 Megaparsec (Mpc) because of a reduced sensitivity at detection frequencies of 10 Hz – 10 kHz by shot noise. These limitations can be overcome by an output power increase of the detector’s light source, which will enhance the sensitivity by an order of magnitude. Thus, the possibility of detecting a gravitational wave will be raised by a factor of 1000 and the detection range will be increased to 150 Mpc, accordingly. In this work a laser systems is presented, which fulfills the free-running laser requirements on stability and beam quality required by the next generation of gravitational wave detectors for the first time. The developed laser system is based on a two-stage concept, supplemented with an active amplitude and frequency stabilization, which is not part of this work. A 35 W Nd:YVO4 amplifier system with an emission wavelength of 1064 nm represents the frequency reference of the laser system and is used as the seed for an injection-locked high power oscillator. This amplifier, which is based on a Master Oscillator Power Amplifier scheme, is already used in today’s gravitational wave detectors and has been proven to be reliable in long-term operation. The linearly polarized output power of more than 200 W is generated inside the oscillator stage, which consists of four Nd:YAG crystals arranged in an asymmetric ring resonator configuration. To compensate for losses due to thermal birefringence inside the longitudinally pumped laser crystals, an imaging depolarization compensation is used. To optimize the output power of the high power oscillator a numerical model was used to calculate the resonator properties. The results derived from this model combined with experimental data are the basis for the dimensions and mechanical design of the final oscillator setup. For the injection-locking of the two laser sources, the resonator length of the high power oscillator has to be adapted and actively stabilized to be resonant with the incident seed frequency. Changes in temperature of the mechanical components result in length variations which will negatively affect the coupling of both laser systems. To compensate for this thermally induced elongation, various mechanical models have been qualitatively studied and an adequate solution consisting of a combination of adapted materials and active cooling was chosen. Furthermore, an additional slow actuator was included into the laser control, which compensates for room temperature and pressure variation induced distortions. With the developed laser system a constant single-frequency output power of 220 W with more than 165 W in the fundamental mode was obtained. Furthermore, it was possible to fulfill the LIGO VIRGO Scientific Collaboration (LVC) free-running laser requirements for their next generation of gravitational wave detectors (advanced LIGO) in cooperation with the Max-Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hannover. Thus, the installation of the presented laser system in the world largest terrestrial gravitational wave observatories started in spring 2011.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first experimental evidence for the existence of gravitational waves in 2015, the amount of data in this scientific area has increased enormously. There has also been a great deal of interest in the scientific community in gravitational waves. The interferometers, used to capture these waves, need to achieve a high level of instrumental sensitivity to be able to detect and analyse the weak signals emitted by both distant sources of intrinsically high intensity and nearby sources of much lower intensity. High sensitivity is often accompanied by high levels of noise that difficult data analysis. In nowadays interferometers, large amounts of data are recorded with a high percentage of noise from which we attempt to extract the possible gravitational waves buried therein. In this dissertation we propose to use a denoising method based on the minimisation of the total variance of the time series that constitute the data. Known as the ROF method, it assumes that the largest contribution to the total variance of a function comes from noise. In this way, a minimisation of this variance should lead to a drastic reduction in the presence of noise. This denoising procedure helps to improve the detection and data quality of gravitational wave analysis. We have implemented two ROF-based denoising algorithms in a commonly used gravitational-wave analysis software package. The analysis package is known as coherent WaveBurst (cWB) and uses the excess energy from the coherence between data from two or more interferometers to find gravitational waves. The denoising methods are the one-step regularised ROF (rROF), and the iterative rROF procedure (irROF). We have tested both methods using events from the gravitational-wave catalogue of the first three observing periods of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA scientific collaboration. These events, named GW1501914, GW151226, GW170817 and GW190521, comprise different wave morphologies of compact binary systems injected at different noise quality levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 2016, physicists announced the breakthrough discovery of the gravitational waves, which were predicted by Albert Einstein in his century-old theory of General Relativity. These gravitational waves were emitted as a result of the collision of two massive black holes that happened about 1.3 billion years ago. They were discovered at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in the United States and thus marked a new milestone for physics. However, it remains unclear to physicists how the gravitational interaction can be included in the Standard Theory of particle physics which describes the electroweak and the strong interactions in our universe. In this volume are the lectures, given by the speakers at the conference on cosmology and particle physics. The discussed topics range from gravitational waves to cosmology, dark matter, dark energy and particle physics beyond the Standard Theory.
