Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Geology of Kentucky Such is the result of the comparison we have made; from which it appears, that a decided analogy exists between the fossils of the upper beds of the Falls, and those of the Devo nian strata of Europe, and that there are sufficient grounds for referring them to that geological epoch. We may next compare the species contained in the west ern Silurian and Devonian strata with their representatives in New York. The first table at the end of this article shows thirty-one spe cies occurring here, which may be considered as identical with New York forms. Of these it will be seen that the Clinton group is represent= ted by two species, the Niagara group by six, the Onon daga limestone by five, the Corniferous limestone by nine, the Hamilton group by eight, and the Genessee slate by two; while from the above comparison, the following formations occurring in New York, above the Clinton group, appear to have no representatives in the western States; namely: the Onondaga slate and water-lime groups, the Pentamerus lime stone, the Delthyris shaly limestone, Oriskany sandstone, Marcellus shale, Tully limestone, and the Portage and Che mung groups. The fossils in our strata, of which we have spoken, correspond precisely in the order of their superposition with those of New York. The total production of crude oil for the whole State, In 1918, was 4,308,893 barrels, valued at $11,128,421.00. In 1919, the total amount of crude oil produced was 9,226,473 barrels, which sold for $24,459,017. The tonnage figures of coal mined in Kentucky have also shot ahead, increasing from 27,809,976 tons valued at $60,297,653.00 in 1917, to 31,530,442 tons valued at $94,591,324 in 1918. Figures covering the various other tonnage values of mineral production In 1919 are not yet available, but are known to have expanded In similar proportions. This unprecedented growth has resulted in a corresponding demand for detailed geological Information concerning the mineral resources of this State. To meet this demand the State Geologist has during the year, made a large number of field examinations, results of which have been embodied In several short reports, which have been printed In pamphlet form in the Mineral and Forest Resource series. These paper bound books were Issued in small editions, ranging from 750 to 2,500 copies. They were almost immediately exhausted in edition, and the daily and insistent demand for them since their exhaustion, has clearly indicated the pressing need for their reprint These papers are therefore, brought together here under a single title for the convenience of the interested public. No changes have been made In the separate reports other than those required in resetting of the type, or to correct evident errata of one kind or another. This edition bound in linen is limited to 2,000. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of Kentucky, 1919: A Classified Compend of State Reports and Other Publications, With Critical Comment Based on Original Investigations The project of preparing a work on Kentucky geology, which should be comprehensive in its scope, had been in the mind of the writer for some time. A year's release from exacting executive duties, at the end of continuous service in the University of Kentucky for a quarter century, afforded the opportunity of putting this project into effect; During all this period as head of the Department of Geology in the institution, and part of the time as member of the staff of the State Geological Survey, he had been a student of Kentucky geology. He has been encouraged in his undertaking by the reception accorded a work of similar scope for Tennessee by Professor J. M. Salford, who, a native of the same State (Ohio) as the writer, felt qualified for the task after a resident in the State of his adoption for a period of twenty-one years. An examination of Part Five of the present work will show that the bibliography of Kentucky geology is varied and large. Much valuable information is contained in the reports, monographs and papers there listed, which is now difficult of access. In the case of the older publications many are out of print and copies are rare. A large number of these publications have been consulted and an attempt has been made to cull from them their important contributions to the geology of the State, and to give credit therefor. It is the hope of the author that this work may prove acceptable to the practical man of affairs desiring information on Kentucky's natural resources. He has also had in mind in the preparation its possible use in the class room of the colleges and high schools of the State. To facilitate this latter use, the text has been given chapter groupings with paragraph sub-headings. In the compilation of this work I am under many obligations to Professors August F. Foerste and Ray S. Rassler for valuable suggestions - none the less valuable though not in every instance adopted. In some cases these came too late to be incorporated in this edition. I owe much to my brother, Dr. Marion Mills Miller, whose experience in book editing enabled him to render much appreciated assistance, especially in the compilation of the index. This last, but by no means least, department of the book is calculated to render the work valuable as a dictionary of reference no less than as a treatise.
