Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes present a selection of Erich L. Lehmann’s monumental contributions to Statistics. These works are multifaceted. His early work included fundamental contributions to hypothesis testing, theory of point estimation, and more generally to decision theory. His work in Nonparametric Statistics was groundbreaking. His fundamental contributions in this area include results that came to assuage the anxiety of statisticians that were skeptical of nonparametric methodologies, and his work on concepts of dependence has created a large literature. The two volumes are divided into chapters of related works. Invited contributors have critiqued the papers in each chapter, and the reprinted group of papers follows each commentary. A complete bibliography that contains links to recorded talks by Erich Lehmann – and which are freely accessible to the public – and a list of Ph.D. students are also included. These volumes belong in every statistician’s personal collection and are a required holding for any institutional library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Butzer, who is considered the academic father and grandfather of many prominent mathematicians, has established one of the best schools in approximation and sampling theory in the world. He is one of the leading figures in approximation, sampling theory, and harmonic analysis. Although on April 15, 2013, Paul Butzer turned 85 years old, remarkably, he is still an active research mathematician. In celebration of Paul Butzer’s 85th birthday, New Perspectives on Approximation and Sampling Theory is a collection of invited chapters on approximation, sampling, and harmonic analysis written by students, friends, colleagues, and prominent active mathematicians. Topics covered include approximation methods using wavelets, multi-scale analysis, frames, and special functions. New Perspectives on Approximation and Sampling Theory requires basic knowledge of mathematical analysis, but efforts were made to keep the exposition clear and the chapters self-contained. This volume will appeal to researchers and graduate students in mathematics, applied mathematics and engineering, in particular, engineers working in signal and image processing.

This book was released on 2006-04-08 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental issue in statistical analysis is testing the fit of a particular probability model to a set of observed data. Monte Carlo approximation to the null distribution of the test provides a convenient and powerful means of testing model fit. Nonparametric Monte Carlo Tests and Their Applications proposes a new Monte Carlo-based methodology to construct this type of approximation when the model is semistructured. When there are no nuisance parameters to be estimated, the nonparametric Monte Carlo test can exactly maintain the significance level, and when nuisance parameters exist, this method can allow the test to asymptotically maintain the level. The author addresses both applied and theoretical aspects of nonparametric Monte Carlo tests. The new methodology has been used for model checking in many fields of statistics, such as multivariate distribution theory, parametric and semiparametric regression models, multivariate regression models, varying-coefficient models with longitudinal data, heteroscedasticity, and homogeneity of covariance matrices. This book will be of interest to both practitioners and researchers investigating goodness-of-fit tests and resampling approximations. Every chapter of the book includes algorithms, simulations, and theoretical deductions. The prerequisites for a full appreciation of the book are a modest knowledge of mathematical statistics and limit theorems in probability/empirical process theory. The less mathematically sophisticated reader will find Chapters 1, 2 and 6 to be a comprehensible introduction on how and where the new method can apply and the rest of the book to be a valuable reference for Monte Carlo test approximation and goodness-of-fit tests. Lixing Zhu is Associate Professor of Statistics at the University of Hong Kong. He is a winner of the Humboldt Research Award at Alexander-von Humboldt Foundation of Germany and an elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. From the reviews: "These lecture notes discuss several topics in goodness-of-fit testing, a classical area in statistical analysis. ... The mathematical part contains detailed proofs of the theoretical results. Simulation studies illustrate the quality of the Monte Carlo approximation. ... this book constitutes a recommendable contribution to an active area of current research." Winfried Stute for Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2006 "...Overall, this is an interesting book, which gives a nice introduction to this new and specific field of resampling methods." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past three decades have witnessed modern advances in statistical modeling and evidence discovery in biomedical, clinical, and population-based research. With these advances come the challenges in accurate model stipulation and application of models in scientific evidence discovery Applied Biostatistical Principles and Concepts provides practical knowledge using biological and biochemical specimen/samples in order to understand health and disease processes at cellular, clinical, and population levels. Concepts and techniques provided will help researchers design and conduct studies, then translate data from bench to clinics in attempt to improve the health of patients and populations. This book is suitable for both clinicians and health or biological sciences students. It presents the reality in statistical modelling of health research data in a concise manner that will address the issue of "big data" type I error tolerance and probability value, effect size and confidence interval for precision, effect measure modification and interaction as well as confounders, thus allowing for more valid inferences and yielding results that are more reliable, valid and accurate.
