Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Embryology, Vol. 2: Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 These sacs and their contents were, immediately after their extrusion from the uterus, placed in 10 per cent formalin solution, followed by 70, 80, and 95 per cent alcohol. The sacs were then cut away, except Where the embryos were attached, and measurements and drawings of each embryo were made. Each was then cut transversely into serial sections 1071 thick, which were 'stained on the slides with hemalum followed by erythrosin. Both embryos, upon examination, appeared very similar in all features, so Embryo VI, which was somewhat the clearer of the two, was selected for the most thorough study, the results being supplemented by the findings in Embryo V. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Embryology, Vol. 4: Nos. 10, 11, 12, 13 It is, however, not quite clear how the cavity traversed by scattered strands of mesoblast and lying between the yolk-sae and the chorion in the Peters ovum is to be interpreted. It may be sup posed to represent the extraembryonic coelom; but it may also be imagined that it has arisen from an extensive loosening up of the tissue, and not by a splitting of the mesoderm, and that the triangular space between the caudal extremity of the embryo, which is lined with flat cells having an epithelial arrangement, is the first primordium of the coelom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Embryology, Vol. 14: Nos. 65-71 Concerning the origin of the pulmonary vessels, not only is our present know ledge meager, but the views are conflicting and based on observations of embryos of different forms, made with varying technique. Wax reconstruction of small blood-vessels, while a valuable asset to the embryologist, is open to manifold errors, and where possible should be checked up by injections. Confusion has arisen from the efforts to prove or disprove the probable course of events in one embryonic form from observations on another embryonic form. In recent studies of the pulmonary vessels, guinea-pig, rabbit, cat, and chick embryos have been represented. The finer details in the development of separate structures might follow quite different courses in these several forms. Although it is to be remembered that any attempt to draw conclusions for one on the basis of another is open to error, this study is presented in the hope that demonstrating the developmental steps of the vessels of the lung in the chick may by comparison prove of value in working out the embryology of similar structures in other forms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Embryology, Vol. 6: Nos. 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 Stockard has recently attempted to define more accurately the eye primordia in Amblystoma by operating upon the medullary plate. First of all, he found that pricking the medullary plate, as Lewis pricked the germ-shield in Fundulus, had no effect whatever upon the growth of the eyes. They invariably grew in a normal way. He then removed various parts of the medullary plate and found that the removal of a median strip about one-fourth to one-third the width of the medullary plate resulted in eyeless embryos The entire eye primordium apparently lies within this median strip. When a narrower strip was removed the embryos de veloped with one eye, with defective eyes, or with no eyes at all From these experiments he concludes that the primordia of Amblystoma arise in the antero median portion of the medullary plate, and not from two independent primordia, as is believed by Lewis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Icons of Life tells the engrossing and provocative story of an early twentieth-century undertaking, the Carnegie Institution of Washington's project to collect thousands of embryos for scientific study. Lynn M. Morgan blends social analysis, sleuthing, and humor to trace the history of specimen collecting. In the process, she illuminates how a hundred-year-old scientific endeavor continues to be felt in today's fraught arena of maternal and fetal politics. Until the embryo collecting project-which she follows from the Johns Hopkins anatomy department, through Baltimore foundling homes, and all the way to China-most people had no idea what human embryos looked like. But by the 1950s, modern citizens saw in embryos an image of "ourselves unborn," and embryology had developed a biologically based story about how we came to be. Morgan explains how dead specimens paradoxically became icons of life, how embryos were generated as social artifacts separate from pregnant women, and how a fetus thwarted Gertrude Stein's medical career. By resurrecting a nearly forgotten scientific project, Morgan sheds light on the roots of a modern origin story and raises the still controversial issue of how we decide what embryos mean.
