Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Canadian Biology: Being Studies From the Biological Stations of Canada, 1917-1918 The staff of scientists at the Dominion Biological stations at St. Andrews, New Brunswick, and Departure Bay, Nanaimo, British Columbia, have continued their laborious investigations into fishery problems and the marine and fresh-water resources of Canada with unabated energy and zeal. The results, or rather portions of them, are contained in the sixteen reports now published. The subjects cover a wide range, and in many cases deal with vexed questions vitally affecting our fishing industries. It is simple justice to say that many of the researches now presented were carried on with much sacrifice on the part of the scientists engaging in them, and without any remuneration at all, or with meagre acknowledgment in the form of an inadequate honorarium. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Canadian Biology: Being Studies From the Biological Stations of Canada, 1914-1915 The bull-kelp grows in spring, but decays rapidly after July, the crop being thickest from July to October. The beds are visible, however, all the year, as new plants attain some size before the Old plants die. They spread asexually by spores. Possibly in late July, harvesting of the beds should commence, after the spores have been discharged. The sea-ivy has a life longer than a year, and spores are produced on fronds towards the base or root, and the species can thus be more readily harvested than the bull-kelp. Marine Biology By professor edward E. Prince, Commissioner of Fisheries, Chairman of the Biological Board of Canada, Canadian Representative on the International Fisheries Commission, and Member of the Advisory Fishery Board of the Dominion. When the last series of Biological papers was published two years ago, I stated, in my introductory note appearing as the preface to the publication, that some memoirs were nearly in shape for publication, but could not be included in the volume issued in 1912. These papers were subsequently placed in my hands, and others have been completed, so that no less than twenty-two important original contributions to the Biology of Canadian waters, marine and fresh-water, are now ready for publication.
