Book Synopsis Theoretical, Experimental, and Numerical Contributions to the Mechanics of Fluids and Solids by : James Casey
Download or read book Theoretical, Experimental, and Numerical Contributions to the Mechanics of Fluids and Solids written by James Casey and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue of ZAMP is published to honor Paul M. Naghdi for his contributions to mechanics over the last forty years and more. It is offered in celebration of his long, productive career in continuum mechan ics; a career which has been marked by a passion for the intrinsic beauty of the subject, an uncompromising adherence to academic standards, and an untiring devotion to our profession. Originally, this issue was planned in celebration of Naghdi's 70th birthday, which occurred on 29 March 1994. But, as the papers were being prepared for the press, it became evident that the illness from which Professor Naghdi had been suffering during recent months was extremely serious. On 26 May 1994, a reception took place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley, at which Naghdi received The Berkeley Citation (which is given in lieu of an honorary degree) and where he was also presented with the Table of Contents of the present collection. Subse quently, he had the opportunity to read the papers in manuscript form. He was very touched that his colleagues had chosen to honor him with their fine contributions. The knowledge that he was held in such high esteem by his fellow scientists brought a special pleasure and consolation to him in his last weeks. On Saturday evening, 9 July 1994, Paul Naghdi succumbed to the lung cancer which he had so courageously endured.

Book excerpt: This monograph intends to give a general survey of the different branches of the geometry of linear displacements which so far have received attention', The material on this new type of differential geometry has grown so rapidly in re cent years that it is impossible, not only to be complete, but even to do justice to the work of the different authors, so that a selection had to be made, We hope, however, that enough territory is covered to enable the reader to understand the present state of the theory in the essential points, The author wishes to thank several mathematicians who have helped hirn with remarks and suggestions; especially Dr. J.A. Book Synopsis Geometrical Foundations of Continuum Mechanics by : Paul Steinmann
Download or read book Geometrical Foundations of Continuum Mechanics written by Paul Steinmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates the deep roots of the geometrically nonlinear kinematics of generalized continuum mechanics in differential geometry. Besides applications to first- order elasticity and elasto-plasticity an appreciation thereof is particularly illuminating for generalized models of continuum mechanics such as second-order (gradient-type) elasticity and elasto-plasticity. After a motivation that arises from considering geometrically linear first- and second- order crystal plasticity in Part I several concepts from differential geometry, relevant for what follows, such as connection, parallel transport, torsion, curvature, and metric for holonomic and anholonomic coordinate transformations are reiterated in Part II. Then, in Part III, the kinematics of geometrically nonlinear continuum mechanics are considered. There various concepts of differential geometry, in particular aspects related to compatibility, are generically applied to the kinematics of first- and second- order geometrically nonlinear continuum mechanics. Together with the discussion on the integrability conditions for the distortions and double-distortions, the concepts of dislocation, disclination and point-defect density tensors are introduced. For concreteness, after touching on nonlinear fir st- and second-order elasticity, a detailed discussion of the kinematics of (multiplicative) first- and second-order elasto-plasticity is given. The discussion naturally culminates in a comprehensive set of different types of dislocation, disclination and point-defect density tensors. It is argued, that these can potentially be used to model densities of geometrically necessary defects and the accompanying hardening in crystalline materials. Eventually Part IV summarizes the above findings on integrability whereby distinction is made between the straightforward conditions for the distortion and the double-distortion being integrable and the more involved conditions for the strain (metric) and the double-strain (connection) being integrable. The book addresses readers with an interest in continuum modelling of solids from engineering and the sciences alike, whereby a sound knowledge of tensor calculus and continuum mechanics is required as a prerequisite.

Book Synopsis Differential and Riemannian Geometry by : Detlef Laugwitz
Download or read book Differential and Riemannian Geometry written by Detlef Laugwitz and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential and Riemannian Geometry focuses on the methodologies, calculations, applications, and approaches involved in differential and Riemannian geometry. The book first offers information on local differential geometry of space curves and surfaces and tensor calculus and Riemannian geometry. Discussions focus on tensor algebra and analysis, concept of a differentiable manifold, geometry of a space with affine connection, intrinsic geometry of surfaces, curvature of surfaces, and surfaces and curves on surfaces. The manuscript then examines further development and applications of Riemannian geometry and selections from differential geometry in the large, including curves and surfaces in the large, spaces of constant curvature and non-Euclidean geometry, Riemannian spaces and analytical dynamics, and metric differential geometry and characterizations of Riemannian geometry. The publication elaborates on prerequisite theorems of analysis, as well as the existence and uniqueness theorem for ordinary first-order differential equations and systems of equations and integrability theory for systems of first-order partial differential equations. The book is a valuable reference for researchers interested in differential and Riemannian geometry.
Book Synopsis From Algebraic Structures to Tensors by : Gérard Favier
Download or read book From Algebraic Structures to Tensors written by Gérard Favier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, tensors play a central role for the representation, mining, analysis, and fusion of multidimensional, multimodal, and heterogeneous big data in numerous fields. This set on Matrices and Tensors in Signal Processing aims at giving a self-contained and comprehensive presentation of various concepts and methods, starting from fundamental algebraic structures to advanced tensor-based applications, including recently developed tensor models and efficient algorithms for dimensionality reduction and parameter estimation. Although its title suggests an orientation towards signal processing, the results presented in this set will also be of use to readers interested in other disciplines. This first book provides an introduction to matrices and tensors of higher-order based on the structures of vector space and tensor space. Some standard algebraic structures are first described, with a focus on the hilbertian approach for signal representation, and function approximation based on Fourier series and orthogonal polynomial series. Matrices and hypermatrices associated with linear, bilinear and multilinear maps are more particularly studied. Some basic results are presented for block matrices. The notions of decomposition, rank, eigenvalue, singular value, and unfolding of a tensor are introduced, by emphasizing similarities and differences between matrices and tensors of higher-order.

Book Synopsis An Overview of General Relativity and Space-Time by : Nicola Vittorio
Download or read book An Overview of General Relativity and Space-Time written by Nicola Vittorio and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook equips Masters’ students studying Physics and Astronomy with the necessary mathematical tools to understand the basics of General Relativity and its applications. It begins by reviewing classical mechanics with a more geometrically oriented language, continues with Special Relativity and, then onto a discussion on the pseudo-Riemannian space-times. Applications span from the inner and outer Schwarzschild solutions to gravitational wave, black holes, spherical relativistic hydrodynamics, and Cosmology. The goal is to limit the abstract formalization of the problems, to favor a hands-on approach with a number of exercises, without renouncing to a pedagogical derivation of the main mathematical tools and findings.
