Book Synopsis Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals by : Agnes Buka
Download or read book Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals written by Agnes Buka and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Book Synopsis Polyurethane Elastomers by : Cristina Prisacariu
Download or read book Polyurethane Elastomers written by Cristina Prisacariu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-03 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of the physical / mechanical behaviour of polyurethanes (PU ́s) elastomers, films and blends of variable crystallinity. Aspects covered include the elasticity and inelasticity of amorphous to crystalline PUs, in relation to their sensitivity to chemical and physical structure. A study is made of how aspects of the constitutive responses of PUs vary with composition: the polyaddition procedure, the hard segment, soft segment and chain extender (diols and diamines) are varied systematically in a large number of systems of model and novel crosslinked andthermoplastic PUs. Results will be related to: microstructural changes, on the basis of evidence from x-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS), and also dynamic mechanical analyses (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and IR dichroism. Inelastic effects will be investigated also by including quantitative correlations between the magnitude of the Mullins effect and the fractional energy dissipation by hysteresis under cyclic straining, giving common relations approached by all the materials studied. A major structural feature explored is the relationship between the nature of the hard segment (crystallising or not) and that of the soft segments. Crystallinity has been sometimes observed in the commercial PUs hard phase but this is usually limited to only a few percent for most hard segment structures when solidified from the melt. One particular diisocyanate, 4,4’-dibenzyl diisocyanate (DBDI) that, in the presence of suitable chain extenders ( diols or diamines), gives rise to significant degrees of crystallinity [i-iii] and this is included in the present work. Understanding the reaction pathways involved, in resolving the subtle morphological evolution at the nanometre level, and capturing mathematically the complex, large-deformation nonlinear viscoelastic mechanical behaviour are assumed to bring new important insights in the world basic research in polyurethanes and towards applied industrial research in this area.

Book Synopsis Machining of Titanium Alloys by : J. Paulo Davim
Download or read book Machining of Titanium Alloys written by J. Paulo Davim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-05 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of examples illustrating the resent research advances in the machining of titanium alloys. These materials have excellent strength and fracture toughness as well as low density and good corrosion resistance; however, machinability is still poor due to their low thermal conductivity and high chemical reactivity with cutting tool materials. This book presents solutions to enhance machinability in titanium-based alloys and serves as a useful reference to professionals and researchers in aerospace, automotive and biomedical fields.

The fourth section (Machining, two chapters) describes the recent results of high speed machining of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the possibility of application of sustainable machining for titanium alloys.
Book Synopsis The Effect of Thermo-mechanical Processing on the Ballistic Limit Velocity of Extra Low Interstitial Titanium Alloy Ti-6AL- 4V by : Matthew S. Burkins
Download or read book The Effect of Thermo-mechanical Processing on the Ballistic Limit Velocity of Extra Low Interstitial Titanium Alloy Ti-6AL- 4V written by Matthew S. Burkins and published by . This book was released on 2000-07-01 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although titanium alloys have been widely used for aerospace applications, they have seldom been used in armor systems. In an effort to provide increased information to armored vehicle designers, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and the U.S. Department of Energy's Albany Research Center (ARC) performed a joint research program to evaluate the effect of thermo-mechanical processing on the ballistic limit velocity for an extra-low interstitial grade of the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. ARC obtained MIL-T-9046J, AB-2 plates from RMI 1 Titanium Company, rolled these plates to final thickness, performed the annealing, and collected mechanical and micro-structural information. ARL then evaluated the plates with 2O-mm fragment- simulating projectiles and l2.7-mm armor-piercing M2 bullets in order to determine the ballistic limit velocity of each plate. Titanium processing and annealing did have an effect on the ballistic limit velocity, but the magnitude of the effect depended on which penetrator was used.
Book Synopsis Machining of Titanium Alloys and Composites for Aerospace Applications by :
Download or read book Machining of Titanium Alloys and Composites for Aerospace Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature detailing the effects of varying operating parameters on tool life when machining Titanium alloy is comprehensive, however, relatively little of this data refers to their effects on machined workpiece surface integrity particularly, residual stress generation and distortion created. Greater knowledge of the effects of operating parameters on surface integrity is critical to the acceptance of new environment, cutting path and cutting sequence strategies on machining of Ti6Al4V aerospace alloys to increase the functional requirements and fatigue life of the milled thin components. In this book four chapters have been included to address the above reported issues. Review from Book News Inc.: Eight invited and peer-reviewed papers offer perspectives by mechanical and materials engineers on issues related to machining aerospace parts made of the two materials. Their topics include turning investigations on machining of titanium alloy Ti64 with different cutting tool inserts, the multi-objective optimization of drilling titanium alloy Ti64A4V, the laser assisted machining of titanium alloys, the influence of tool geometry and machining parameters on the surface quality and the effect of surface quality on the compressive strength of plastic reinforced with carbon fiber, and challenges in drilling multi-materials.
Book Synopsis Fretting Fatigue Behavior of Shot-Peened Titanium Alloy TI-6AL-4V Under Seawater Conditions by :
Download or read book Fretting Fatigue Behavior of Shot-Peened Titanium Alloy TI-6AL-4V Under Seawater Conditions written by and published by . This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fretting fatigue behavior of the shot-peened titanium alloy, Ti- 6Al-4V, was investigated under a corrosive environment of synthetic seawater. Fretting fatigue tests were performed over a wide stress range to determine the effect of seawater at high and low cycle fatigue regimes. The results from this study showed: (1) seawater significantly reduces the fretting fatigue life of shot-peened Ti-6Al-4V at both high and low cycle fatigue relative to its counterpart in ambient laboratory conditions, (2) shot peening increases the fretting fatigue life of Ti-6Al-4V when tested under dry and seawater conditions relative to its counterpart of unpeened Ti-6Al-4V, (3) surface debris from samples tested under seawater conditions contained large quantities of oxide and seawater contaminants, (4) cleaning after testing removed most of the oxide and seawater contaminants from the sample.
