Book excerpt: The AlveoConsistograph helps you to classify, control, and select wheat and flour and to optimize their blending for specific rheological properties. It measures the effects of improvers, ingredients, and other additives, resulting in better control of dough on the production line and more consistent end-product quality. The AlveoConsistograph Handbook, Second Edition provides an understanding of the technical data generated by the instrument and gives timely application examples. It explains the workings of the Chopin Consistograph and provides deep insight into its coupling with the Chopin Alveograph. As the first revision of this resource in 20 years, this new edition explains major modifications and improvements of the alveograph through new and completely revised chapters. A new chapter on the Consistograph, the component used to determine the water absorption capacity of flour, includes test procedures, applications, differences from other devices, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Another new chapter discusses the debate surrounding the testing of samples using either constant water content or constant consistency methods. This chapter gives useful insight into the adapted hydrated alveograph protocol and its benefits for users of flour that will be part of formulations when gluten quality and performance is crucial. It covers the controversial subject in depth, along with the technical basis for the development of the debate, and compares the uses of both methods on the same wheat. In addition to wheat flour, the book provides guidance for using the alveograph on additional products, such as durum wheat semolina and durum pasta. All the chapters have been rewritten to include the latest practices and will help users gain a better understanding of how this important technology is used in today’s food labs. This large-format, easy-to-read handbook includes two helpful appendixes: The first lists the main parts of the alveograph, and the second lists selected references concerning the alveograph. The AlveoConsistograph Handbook will provide users all along the cereal chain with up-to-date information that helps them to get the most out of their daily use of this important technology. The book will be especially useful for food scientists in the baking industry, quality control laboratories, suppliers of enzymes and additives, breeders, grain scientists involved with grain storage, and grain exporters Description of different types of alveographs Theory of the alveograph Description of the alveograph procedure Modification of the alveograph procedure Interpretation of alveograph results Factors influencing the alveograph Alveograph calibration Description of the consistograph Adapted hydration method for the alveograph Troubleshooting

Book Synopsis The Forests of the Congo Basin by : Carlos de Wasseige
Download or read book The Forests of the Congo Basin written by Carlos de Wasseige and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2010 State of the Forest report (SOF) benefited from financial support from the European Union, the United States, Germany, France and UNESCO. It represents the collaborative effort of over 100 individuals from a diversity of institutions and the forestry administrations of the Central African countries. The SOF process began with the selection and definition of indicators relevant to monitoring the state of forests in Central Africa. The indicators are structured around three thematic areas: (i) forest cover; (ii) management of production forests; and (iii) conservation and biodiversity. They are presented in a hierarchical structure at the regional, national and management unit (i.e. logging concessions and protected areas) levels. The indicators were vetted by a representative panel of stakeholders of forest management in Central Africa. The indicators are used to guide an annual data collection process carried out between April and August by national groups of four to ten individuals working within the forestry administrations. The data reported on in the 2010 SOF were primarily collected in 2009 and 2010. Results were validated in national workshops attended by government officials as well as representatives of environmental NGOs, the private sector and development projects. The data provided an important basis for the authors of the 11 chapters of the 2010 SOF, which were under the coordination of a scientific committee of international renown. A final workshop was held 29-30 March, 2011 in Douala to review a draft report. Following amendments based on comments from a wide audience of experts the final layout was completed.

Book Synopsis Granular Dynamics, Contact Mechanics and Particle System Simulations by : Colin Thornton
Download or read book Granular Dynamics, Contact Mechanics and Particle System Simulations written by Colin Thornton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the Discrete Element Method (DEM) technique, a discontinuum modelling approach that takes into account the fact that granular materials are composed of discrete particles which interact with each other at the microscale level. This numerical simulation technique can be used both for dispersed systems in which the particle-particle interactions are collisional and compact systems of particles with multiple enduring contacts. The book provides an extensive and detailed explanation of the theoretical background of DEM. Contact mechanics theories for elastic, elastic-plastic, adhesive elastic and adhesive elastic-plastic particle-particle interactions are presented. Other contact force models are also discussed, including corrections to some of these models as described in the literature, and important areas of further research are identified. A key issue in DEM simulations is whether or not a code can reliably simulate the simplest of systems, namely the single particle oblique impact with a wall. This is discussed using the output obtained from the contact force models described earlier, which are compared for elastic and inelastic collisions. In addition, further insight is provided for the impact of adhesive particles. The author then moves on to provide the results of selected DEM applications to agglomerate impacts, fluidised beds and quasi-static deformation, demonstrating that the DEM technique can be used (i) to mimic experiments, (ii) explore parameter sweeps, including limiting values, or (iii) identify new, previously unknown, phenomena at the microscale. In the DEM applications the emphasis is on discovering new information that enhances our rational understanding of particle systems, which may be more significant than developing a new continuum model that encompasses all microstructural aspects, which would most likely prove too complicated for practical implementation. The book will be of interest to academic and industrial researchers working in particle technology/process engineering and geomechanics, both experimentalists and theoreticians.
Book Synopsis Faecal Sludge Management by : Linda Strande
Download or read book Faecal Sludge Management written by Linda Strande and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.
