Book excerpt: LES PROPRIETES ACIDO-BASIQUES DE FILMS PASSIFS SUR ACIERS INOXYDABLES SONT EXAMINEES EN RELATION AVEC L'ADHERENCE DE CES ACIERS A DES REVEMENTS ORGANIQUES. PLUSIEURS ETATS DE SURFACE (REALISES INDUSTRIELLEMENT OU AU LABORATOIRE) D'UN MEME ACIER AUSTENITIQUE AISI 304 ONT ETE ETUDIES DANS CE TRAVAIL. DES CARACTERISATIONS TOPOLOGIQUES ET CHIMIQUES DE SURFACE ONT PERMIS DE LES DISTINGUER EN TERMES DE RUGOSITE ET DU RAPPORT DE LEURS DEUX PRINCIPAUX ELEMENTS CONSTITUTIFS : CR/FE. LES FILMS PASSIFS, PRINCIPALEMENT CONSTITUES D'OXYDES ET D'HYDROXYDES - EXHIBENT GENERALEMENT DES PROPRIETES SEMI-CONDUCTRICES. LA CHARGE D'ESPACE, S C, DEVELOPPEE DANS LE FILM PASSIF EN CONTACT AVEC UN ELECTROLYTE, A ETE UTILISEE DE MANIERE ORIGINALE POUR ESTIMER LE CARACTERE ACIDE ( S C POSITIVE) OU BASIQUE ( S C NEGATIVE) DU FILM PASSIF ; PLUS IMPORTANTE EST SA VALEUR, PLUS IMPORTANT SERA LE CARACTERE ACIDE OU BASIQUE. LES VALEURS DE CHARGES D'ESPACE ONT ETE MESUREES PAR DES TECHNIQUES ELECTROCHIMIQUES, UTILISEES CLASSIQUEMENT (PHOTOELECTROCHIMIE, SPECTROSCOPIE D'IMPEDANCE) OU DE MANIERE PLUS NOVATRICE (CHRONO-AMPEROMETRIE). LES RESULTATS OBTENUS ONT PERMIS UN CLASSEMENT DES ETATS DE SURFACE EN TERMES D'ACIDITE CROISSANTE. PARALLELEMENT, DES TESTS D'ADHESION (CLIVAGE) ONT PERMIS LA CLASSIFICATION DE CES MEMES ETATS DE SURFACE EN TERME DE RESISTANCE A LA PROPAGATION D'UNE FISSURE AU SEIN D'UN JOINT COLLE ACIER INOX/RESINE EPOXIDIQUE/ACIER INOX. L'EXAMEN POST-OUVERTURE DE TELS JOINTS MONTRE QUE LA RUPTURE DE CES JOINTS EST ADHESIVE. L'EXAMEN COMPARATIF DE L'ENSEMBLE DES RESULTATS CONFIRME QUE, DANS LES CAS ETUDIES, L'ACIDO-BASICITE DES FILMS PASSIFS A UNE INFLUENCE SUR L'ADHESION METAL/POLYMERE, ET MONTRE QU'ELLE DEPEND DU RAPPORT CR/FE EN SURFACE ET PEUT ETRE EVALUEE A PARTIR DE L'APPROCHE ELECTROCHIMIQUE PROPOSEE.

Book excerpt: The first part of this book looks at the consequence of chemical and topological defects existing on real surfaces, which explain the wettability of super hydrophilc and super hydrophobic surfaces. There follows an in-depth analysis of the acido-basicity of surfaces with, as an illustration, different wettability experiments on real materials. The next chapter deals with various techniques enabling the measurement of acido basicity of the surfaces including IR and XPS technics. The last part of the book presents an electrochemical point of view which explains the surface charges of the oxide at contact with water or other electrolyte solutions in the frame of Bronsted acido-basicity concept. Various consequences are deduced from such analyses illustrated by original measurement of the point of zero charge or by understanding the basic principles of the electrowetting experiments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in various areas of chemistry have been decisively influenced by the principles of structure and mechanism and by the ideas of coordination chemistry, in particular by the donor-acceptor approach, A unified view of almost all kinds of molecular forces is provided by quantum mechanics, and for practical purposes have been classified according to model assumptions, namely, dispersion, polarization, electrostatic, and short-range forces. The latter are divided into two- and three-center covalent chemical bonds, metallic bonds, and exchange-repulsion forces. This approach allows statements of principle and systematic analysis. However, quantitative predictions on concrete large systems are virtually impossible, and there are no general rules that account for structural and chemical changes due to intermolecular interactions. Chemists are therefore left with qualitative descriptions in which the changes in electron densities are considered. Such models as the MO theory or the resonance concept unrealistically assume that the nuclei remain in fixed positions. Further difficulties are encountered in the attempted description on the "nature" of the chemical bond, e.g., the forces involved. In order to avoid these difficulties an extension of the donor-acceptor concept, characterized by the comparison between equilibrium structures in different molecular environments, will be presented in this book. In this way, changes in the positions of the nuclei can be taken into account and the question of the nature of the molecular forces is no longer important.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a classical approach materials science is mainly dealing with interatomic interactions within molecules, without paying much interest on weak intermolecular interactions. However, the variety of structures actually is the result of weak ordering because of noncovalent interactions. Indeed, for self-assembly to be possible in soft materials, it is evident that forces between molecules must be much weaker than covalent bonds between the atoms of a molecule. The weak intermolecular interactions responsible for molecular ordering in soft materials include hydrogen bonds, coordination bonds in ligands and complexes, ionic and dipolar interactions, van der Waals forces, and hydrophobic interactions. Recent evolutions in nanosciences and nanotechnologies provide strong arguments to support the opportunity and importance of the topics approached in this book, the fundamental and applicative aspects related to molecular interactions being of large interest in both research and innovative environments. We expect this book to have a strong impact at various education and research training levels, for young and experienced researchers from both academia and industry.
